Where are the four guys riding horses, or the dark skies, or precipitation of cats and dogs?

When college basketball removed five seconds from its shot clock, going from 35 to 30, many were declaring the move an abomination to the senses. That, despite the quality of playing already being ho-hum, the abandonment of five total seconds on the shot clock would result in some horrific things.

Remember all of those people? I do. Outside of an E! "Where Are They Now?" special, most have gone the way of the dinosaur. You will read few, if any, columns on the idea that the 30-second shot clock did not work in the 2015-16 season.

Thing is, it was always going to work. Not because it would mean more efficient basketball, which ended up happening anyway, but because the tempo of games would alter. And, well, that's why people watch basketball. To consume people playing it. Not to follow coaches attempting to outsmart other coaches via shortening the game by eating up the clock.

Here is the reality of the situation, though: The shot clock was never going to fix everything. While arguments were at one point made that the shorter shot clock would make it easier for defenses to defend and result in even less efficient offense, bad basketball players were forever going to play bad basketball. It wouldn't matter if the shot clock was eight hours long or 10 seconds.

What the shot clock did do, however, was simply force the action. Sure, in an ideal scenario teams would be both efficient and play at a quick-ish pace, but at least now we live in a world where college basketball teams are jacking up a few more
