CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study It was in the 18th Century; an era of discoveries and creationism that had made developments for science and history. One of the developments include different kinds of application such as, shoe polish. A Shoe polish is a waxy paste, cream, or liquid us to polish, shine and waterproof leather shoes to extend the footwear’s life and restore, maintain and improve their appearance. Shoe polish helps the material (especially seen in leather) that shoes are made of. It contains fats, lipids and wax. The lipids make the leather smooth and soft, while the wax protects it form dirt and moisture. It also gives a beautiful sheen. Procedure or methods on applying a shoe polish are to use a rag, cloth, or brush. Shoe shiner is not a cleaning product, and therefore the footwear should be both clean and dry before application. A vigorous rubbing action to apply the polish evenly on the shoe, followed by further buffing with a clean dry brush or cloth, usually provide good results. Another technique, known as split polishing or bull polishing involves gently rubbing polish into the leather with a cloth and a drop of water spit. This achieves the mirror-like, high-gloss finish sometimes known as spit shine or bull, which is especially valued in military organizations. Since medieval times, dubbin, a waxy product was used to soften and waterproof leather; however, it did not impart shine. It was mode from natural wax, oil, soda ash, and tallow. As leather with high natural sheen became popular in the 18th century, a high glossy finish became important, particularly on shoes and boots, in most cases, a variety of homemade polishes were used to provide this finish, often with beeswax. In the modern ages, the very first shoe polish that was to resemble is Kiwi. Kiwi was a major success. It preserved shoe leather, made it shine and maintained color. Its three main ingredients were in the form of chemicals including 4-Diethylaminoazobezene, heavy Naphtha and Carnauba wax. One of its biggest rivalries was The Cobra Boot Polish. Cobra was noted for a series of cartoon advertisement in The Sydney Bulletin, starting in 1909, using a character called “Chunder Lao of Akim Foo”. Many people also had their own preferences at that time; some people choose to use/sell the ones that are commercially made, the ones that are being created through small or big factories and being created through different toxic/non-toxic ingredients. Some people choose to use/sell or to formulate their own and get their ingredients from nature, just like Vegetable oils, Olive Oils and even the Banana Peel. Banana peels are used as feedstock as they have some nutritional value. Banana peels are widely used for that purpose on small farms in regions where bananas are grown. There are some concerns over the impact of tannins contained in the peels on animals that consume them. Banana peels are used as feedstock for cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, fish and several other species. Banana peels are also used for water purification, to produce ethanol, cellulase, laccase and in composting. It is not only used for feedstock and water purification but for shoe polishing as well. Bananas contain potassium, an ingredient commonly found in conventional shoe polish products, and the oil from the banana skin will absorb into the leather, resulting in shiny shoes that will last longer.

Statement of the Problem The study aims to make a shoe polish out of charcoal, yellow bell and banana peel.
Specifically, the study aims to: 1) Determine whether the CYB Shoe Polish is acceptable in terms of: a) Appearance b) Color c) Luster d) Smell e) Texture 2) Determine if the CYB Shoe Polish is as effective as the KIWI Shoe Polish in shining black shoes.
Hypothesis
1) The CYB Shoe Polish is acceptable in terms of appearance, color, luster, smell and texture. 2) The CYB Shoe Polish is as effective as the KIWI Shoe Shiner in shining black shoes.
Significance of the Study Many people eat bananas. But they only eat what’s inside it. They just throw the banana peel in the garbage. Yellow bell plants on the other hand can be seen everywhere. The flowers just scatter on the streets. The researchers thought that banana peel and the flowers of the yellow bell can be made useful. Instead of letting it put to waste, the researchers thought of using banana peel and yellow bell with charcoal to make a shoe polish. Doing this would also help the society economically since we will be able to produce a cheaper shoe polish.
Scope and Limitation This study was limited only on the production of shoe polish from Banana Peel and Yellow Bell and determines whether charcoal was adaptable as a coloring agent. This study was conducted (Place Please). This study was limited to black leather shoes only. The researchers will not test the water-resistance of the shoe polish.
Definition of Terms Charcoal - Charcoal is a light, black residue, consisting of carbon and any remaining ash, obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood or other substances in the absence of oxygen. Yellow Bell (Allamanda cathartica) - Yellow Bells is an evergreen shrub that loves sun and heat. It can be grown in a container. It blooms from late spring through early fall. They are drought resistant, and do well in almost any soil. The Yellow Bells blooms are bright yellow and tubular; they look like elongated bells. This desert plant attracts hummingbirds and bees. The leaves are a vibrant green color. Yellow Bells plants will get to about 12 feet tall, and several feet wide.
Banana Peel – the outer covering of a banana fruit.
Appearance – the state, condition, manner, or style in which an object appears. It is the way that something looks.
Color – The appearance of objects or light sources described in terms of the individual’s perception of them, involving hue, lightness, and saturation for objects and hue, brightness, and saturation for light sources.
Luster – a glow of reflected light.
Shoe Polish – a substance used to produce a shiny protective surface on footwear.
Smell – power of perceiving odors or scents by means of the organs in the nose.
Texture – the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.
