...When doing the experiment of coke and mentos, most people know that when you put the mentos in the soda the mentos makes the soda fizz, and the soda comes rushing out like a geyser. However, most people don't know why this experiment works or how it works, they just know you put the mentos in and the soda comes out. The experiment is actually a little more complicated than that, and in this research paper I will be talking about it more in depth. In this experiment a common misconception people have is that they think it is a chemical reaction. Scientists are now say it is actually a physical reaction due to a process called nucleation. Nucleation is when the carbon dioxide in the soda is attracted to mentos. This happens with mentos because...

...destined for success. His parents, grandparents knew he was a gifted as a child and eventually would turn into something great. He had something that no one else had, a savvy for business ethics and profit. It is incredible to me that by the time Buffett finished high school he had $6,000 in savings. And even more incredible to have almost $10,000 by the time he got out of college. Buffett took what he learned as a young boy about selling everyday items like gum and used the same philosophy in making billions in the stock market. As a young boy shades of brilliance were apparent, selling lemonade, bubble gum, then the purchase of pin ball machines for use in barber shops and then selling them for a profit. Buffett began trading stocks at a young age with success. It was obvious Buffett knew what he was doing as an adolescent and I think this set the foundation’s for his strategies later in life. It also shows that he would not invest something he was not familiar with. Who is not familiar with gum, lemonade and pin ball as a kid?? Warren Buffett was first exposed to formal training in investing at Columbia University, where Buffett studied under Prof. Ben Graham. Graham developed a method that identified undervalued stocks and this was Buffett’s cornerstone approach of what is now called “valued investing”. From 1962 up through the 80’s Buffett really made his mark on the financial institutions across the US. In 1965 Buffett took a risk with Berkshire...

...Rebuttal Paper Dayna Kielau BCOM/275 January 16, 2012 Plan B One Step is an emergency contraceptive pill that prevents the fertilization of an egg after unprotected sex. The FDA wanted Plan B One Step to be made available without a prescription to all ages. The Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled this. “The result of Sebelius' action is that Plan B will remain available to women ages 17 and older without a prescription, but those 16 and younger will still need to see a doctor first in order to get the product.” (www.npr.org) The decision was also backed up by President Obama. In a news conference Obama stated “I will say this, as the father of two daughters. I think it is important for us to make sure that we apply some common sense to various rules when it comes to over-the-counter medicine. And as I understand it, the reason Kathleen made this decision was she could not be confident that a 10-year old or an 11-year old goes into a drugstore, should be able – alongside bubble gum or batteries – be able to buy a medication that potentially, if not used properly, could end up having an adverse effect. And I think most parents would probably feel the same way.” (www.npr.org) “As doctors and researchers have repeatedly stated, ample research shows Plan B to be safe for women of all ages and appropriate for over-the-counter access. It is deeply disappointing that this administration would repeat the mistakes of the previous one,”...

...Abstract This paper will define the topic definition and will indicate a couple of scenarios and cases that relate to this topic. It will indicate what goes into a background check and what the pros and cons are. I will inform my readers what I learned and the conclusion of my paper. Topic I just went in for an interview at a prestigious company that I have been dreaming of working at for many years and they said the job is mine if everything clears with my background check. Background check? As I walk out of the building I cannot help but wonder what they might find that may be detrimental to my opportunity to get this job. Questions start flying through my mind as my heart begins to race. What might they find from my past jobs? What are they trying to find? Who will they talk to? I have never stolen anything from my past jobs, embezzled or any of that sort. Or, do they not have limitations on how far back they will look. Will they find out I stole that one pack of bubble gum when I was 6 years old or when I was an accessory to changing price tags on bed sheets at Ross? Will they find out I worked at that company and did not put that on my resume as I only worked there for only a month? Should I go back in and confess all my wrong doings? Or, am I just overreacting? As I’m getting into my car I decided that I was being irrational and should just wait until I get a call back from the company. All I can really do is just wait, or do some amateur...

Addition of increasing amount of sesame oil decreased viscosity, increased specific gravity of cake batter; decreased cake volume and overall quality score. Microstructure studies showed disrupted gluten matrix. Among the two different hydrocolloids [hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and xanthan] and emulsifiers [glycerol monostearate (GMS) and sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate (SSL)] tried, HPMC and SSL increased the batter viscosity, decreased the specific gravity, increased the volume and overall quality...

...Sabrmetrics Sabrmetrics Bill Stewart English Composition – ENG115 April 14, 2010 It has been said many times over that numbers do not lie but they also do not tell the entire story. Baseball is a game that has always been based in numbers and statistics. Now current baseball people, historians, authors, general managers use a new math termed "sabrmetrics" to determine the worth of a player, monetarily and statistically. No longer are statistics viewed as simple as numbers on the back of a bubble gum card. These mathematical equations are being used in business for general purposes, as well as human resources purposes and is now taught in collegiate universities. (Costa 2001) Sabrmetrics is a new way to look at people, players, statistics and to try to predict the futures. The name is taken from the combination of the acronym SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) and "metrics" meaning "measurement". (Albert 1994) Most business leaders are using 20th century metrics to create 21st century success. Business leaders were taught to "manage what we can measure" and, generally, what's most easily measurable are the more tangible aspects of life. In business, this translates to metrics like profitability and cash flow. Like baseball, businesses rely on numbers. (Bradbury 2007) Sabrmetrics can help a company in developing the right performance measures and monitoring tools for different scenarios and then allocate resources optimally...

In order to maintain 42% of Expense-to-Revenue Ratio, David Myers (controller) asked Timothy Schneberger (director of international fixed costs) to adjust $370 million into accruals account. Sullivan (CFO) asked Myers and Yates (director of accounting department) to order managers in the company’s general accounting department to capitalize $771 million of expenses into an asset account. In 2000, Yates told Vinson and Troy Normand (manager in general accounting) that Myers and Sullivan wanted them to release $828 million of line accruals into the income statement. Audrey was conceived with a lot of fanfare, much ado and of blue blood. She was well planned and conceived with high hopes. She had everything going for her—looks, money, fame, fortune, power, hype, high expectations and a perfect incubation. A scant six month later, Audrey died. Her parents wanted it to be a quiet affair, but it was not. The death of Audrey sent shock waves through the community. How can such a tragedy happen? In case you did not get to know or love Audrey, she was not human. She was a much-hyped breed of gadget called the Internet Appliance. A sleek looking thingamajig with a touch sensitive screen that wanted to adorn your kitchen counter. It is basically a stunted computer. It can surf the web, do basic Email, get stock quotes, check up on the weather, and some limited word processing all for a lot of money ($500 to get started, $22 per month henceforth). Alex was going on a vacation, to take time off from his job of growing bacterial cultures in little Petri dishes. He was studying the effects of mucus on Staph cultures in a somewhat grungy laboratory in London. He forgot to wash up his last batch before he went off, and when he came back two weeks later, he saw an amazing sight. A mold was all over the dish, but all the bacteria were dead. To cut a long story short, Alex, or rather Dr. Alexander Fleming, found...

...BEST WAY TO STUDY For some time, research studies have concluded that we do not learn / study in precisely the same way. For this brief commentary, I have deliberately grouped both terms as similar. While this common sense approach towards scholarship represents a welcomed message for parents and students, many teachers still teach a large number of pupils one way, more often than not, by using traditional teaching styles that might appear to be successful for the teacher but unsuccessful for a large majority of the youngsters seated in front of them. This is incorrect teaching -- proof that common sense continues to be not all that common within many of today's classrooms. My following commentary attempts to address this key issue, while at the same time, to offer suggestions for possible classroom improvement. If teachers require their students to receive domain-specific information in a way that does not correspond with their dominant learning modalities, to perform under classroom conditions that interfere with their preferred learning, or to demonstrate learning in such a way that fails them to use their more dominant intelligences, then such teachers create within their students forms of artificial stress, reduced motivation, and repressed performance. Along this same line of thinking, there is a considerable body of research evidence suggesting that many special education students who have been formally categorized, for example, as learning disabled (LD) are, in fact...

... seem to be a much safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, which contain a much higher number of notoriously harmful chemicals. Nonetheless, nicotine is addictive and is classified as a poison (Cancer Research UK, 2013). The issue has attracted heated debate, but the question remains: “Should e-‐ cigarettes be classed as general consumer products, tobacco products, medicines or drug-‐delivery devices?” 2 In attempting to answer the above question, this paper discusses the evolution of e-‐ cigarettes through the lenses of technological determinism (TD) and social constructivist approach (SCOT). In the first part of the paper, the main assumptions underlying TD are considered and development of e-‐cigarettes is illustrated as a linear process. A thorough...
