Substance abuse questions take up an entire page with a decent screening that asks the frequency and duration of use of alcohol, ten different substances, and a space for “other.” I think this screening is necessary for identifying substance use/abuse behaviors in order for the practitioner to be aware of these behaviors and possible risks during treatment. A measles outbreak occurred in California between December 2014 and February 2015. The first patient was reported to be an unvaccinated 11-year-old who had recently visited Disney in Orange County, California. Several more cases were reported in California and in Utah. The common factor between these patients was the visit to Disney between December 17th and 20th. Between December 2014 and February 2015 there were 125 confirmed cases of measles in the United States from this outbreak. Most of the victims were California residents but there were some cases in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Washington as well as Mexico and Canada. Case conceptualization is important for developing a good treatment plan and enables you to speak intelligently about your client in supervision, collaboration, and consultation; plus, it helps immensely in job interviews and passing the exam. So, what goes into a good case conceptualization? 1. MENTAL STATUS EXAM A mental status exam (MSE) consists of a short list of quick observations that contribute to your case conceptualization. There is no need for a formal checklist; it is something you should always have in the back of your mind. Is my client’s affect congruent with the situation? Is she dressed as I would expect? Does she seem oriented to person, place and time?
