Food For Thought: Media Analysis

In regards to examining various types of media as well as understanding how environmental issues are represented in the media, I was able to create a media project that demonstrated these characteristics while shedding light to environmental issues in an alternative way. The purpose of my zine, Food for Thought: Strategies for Change was to create an alternative piece of media in print to attract the audience of young individuals in order to inform them on food related issues that our society is currently faced with. David Orr (2004) was one inspiration while coming up with an idea for our zine in order to understand the need to educate individuals. He helps the reader understand that education is an important aspect in fixing problems that …show more content…
We were also able to put our own spin on topics and represent them in a way that could catch the attention of youth while still getting our messages across. It was also important to consider that the capitalist society we currently live in contributes greatly to the problems within our food system and by creating a zine that is noncommercial this capitalist profit motive is not present (Jeppesen, 2012). In addition, we chose to focus our project in relation to food because we felt that mainstream media often does not provide information on environmental justice and food sovereignty which are important aspects in changing our food system. The mainstream media that we currently have does not explore the food system in an in-depth way. We also wanted individuals to be able to reflect upon their own food identities because we feel as if this can be a starting point in tackling other environmental issues that we …show more content…
The process began with coming up with an idea as well as creating a space to produce important and successful messages to the reader. An example of a zine that informed our zine process was the Girls Action Foundation (2012). Although this example did not directly pertain to food, it allowed us to reflect upon the importance of zine culture and understand the different ways in which individuals organize their zines. The goal of our zine was to make it visually appealing to the eye by having many images present as well as bold colorful titles. In addition to this, my partner and I tried to come up with titles that could catch the attention of the reader in a unique way. For example, having titles such as “ Your Fast Food can be Your Last food” or “ Never Eat Food You Cant Pronounce… Except Quinoa”, are titles that have creativity and that also would not be used in a magazine on store shelves. We wanted to use titles on each of our pages that symbolized the messages that we wanted to evoke such as understanding the importance of needing to read nutritional facts and labels. On this page, we explain that if we often cannot pronounce the ingredients within the products we are consuming we should probably not be consuming these products, however, although most cannot pronounce quinoa it is safe to consume this. Marketplace Analysis of Whole Foods

...Marketplace Analysis of Whole Foods Charles Griffith University of St. Mary Marketing Management MGT-704   MARKETPLACE ANALYSIS OF WHOLE FOODS “With great courage, integrity, and love – we embrace our responsibility to co-create a world where each of us, our communities and our planet can flourish. All while celebrating the sheer love and joy of food” (Whole Foods, 2015). This is Whole Food’s “higher purpose statement”. This statement expresses and delivers what Whole Foods, as an organization, believes and what must be apparent to the consumer. As an organization founded with the drive to bring the freshest and most natural products to consumers, Whole Foods must maintain alignment with that core philosophy. Created in response to the lack of organic and natural options of the traditional grocery stores and chains Whole Foods has grown from its origins in a three story house in Austin to the multi-billion dollar enterprise it is today without sacrificing this core value (Harrison, 2014). This is very important: The continued development and growth of Whole Foods must maintain this core philosophy. The platform for value creation is rooted in market share growth and consistent and well defined organizational philosophy (Deshpande, R. & Webster, F. 1989). Keeping Whole Food’s core philosophy in mind, strategy for growth of the business and recapturing of market share are the primary goals of this analysis. The supermarket and “other grocery” markets within the United...

How Little Is Too Much

...compromised, as well as being exposed to too much information, and opening the door to various unhealthy perceptions of beauty and additions associated with those perceptions. Unrealistic media images that are presented on the internet, in movies, magazines and models make it difficult for the average American woman to follow. Analysis of females, fictional or real, show a bias towards body weight well below the recommended size and weight for people in their age group. As a result, females who are unable to conform to the idea being put forth in the media are taking extreme measure to be more like their role models. Those that fall short of the idea of the “perfect” body shape can be vulnerable to depression, poor self-esteem, and general body dissatisfaction. With the increase in technology, we have more exposure to unrealistic standard for beauty. One example of this downside to technology is that of pro-eating disorder websites which are simply known as pro-ana/pro-mia websites. “Ana” is short for anorexia nervosa. It is a common eating disorder where individuals obsess about weight, what they eat and how much exercise they participate in. “Mia” is the shortened form of bulimia nervosa, which is a very common eating disorder where the person binge eats. They will eat large amounts of food and then find ways to purge the calories, in some unhealthy manner. Both disorders are often diagnosed together, with an individual being preoccupied with their weight and appearance. The...

Chronic Depression Personal Statement

...we organized a social, inviting newcomer international students and all students of Bangladeshi origin. Being the first event of its kind at Western, it was a challenging experience. As the Event Manager, I worked tirelessly to connect with students who expressed interest in our club. I drafted emails to invite them to our social and designed visuals to be posted in popular campus areas. To add a flavour of Fall in Bangladesh into our event, I ensured that we served traditional food and hosted board games that were played in Bangladesh during this time of the year. The social exceeded our expectations; we had thirty-five students attend and many were interested in furthering their involvement in our club. However, the distance between Bangladeshi families in London, postgraduate students, and newcomers remained. As Bangladeshis are a small minority at Western, most students were not familiar with Bangladesh or our culture. As I pondered how these issues could be tackled, I realized that Bangladeshi food, arts and language were the best ways to unite Bangladeshis. From this, the idea of organizing a mock Bangladeshi wedding, incorporating dance and musical performances, and dinner catered in Bangladeshi style, emerged. My fellow executives shared my vision of uniting Bangladeshis in London and encouraged me to take a leadership role. Thus, I delegated roles to executives in the planning processes, negotiated prices and accommodations with experienced performers and assisted in...

How Media Effect Children

...How Media Effect Children Franchester White Eng/101 September 7, 2014 Karen Strimkovskey Is your child safe? As a parent, you always want to know what your child is watching on television. The media is a powerful tool that doesn’t always teach a positive lesson. Media have provided the means and opportunity for children to distort reality into fallacies through television and video games. While media programs have a negative effect on children, there are some positive programs. The largest amounts of violence are found in children shows. Children between the age of 2 and 18 spends 6 hours and 32 minutes on an average a day using media with the exception of sleeping this is more than they spend on any other activity. When multiple media is stimulated, this time is increased to 8 hours a day. Big parts of media exposure are violent acts that are also witnessed in video games. On an average, a young child will have viewed 200,000 acts of violence on television (TV). Exposure to violent media wrecks havoc on thoughts, feeling, and most importantly, behavior. “The Influence of Media Violence on Youth,” a report appearing in the December 2003 edition of “Psychological Science in the Public Interest,” points to strong evidence points to the exposure to media violence causes boost in physically and verbally aggressive behavior in children. “Extensive research evidence indicates that media violence can contribute to aggressive behavior...

Hum 176 Final Assignment

...Part 1: As a news director of a local television station, it is my duty to make my lead story about what is happening in the community. A celebrity’s death is important to many, but the parks closing three days a week will affect my audience more. When reporting news, you should always think about the effects of the community and not the ratings. Rating matter, but not as much as people seem to think they should. Today’s headline is that the city council has just voted to close all city parks for three days a week to save money. I think we should get together and do a fundraiser to allow our children to play at the park when us adults need a break. They will probably close these parks from Saturday to Monday. These days are two of the days that children are not in school. What about our younger children not old enough for school. Many take their children to the park in the morning time, while the school-age children are at school. “Why do we need to save money at a city park, anyway?” City parks are free for the children to play anytime during the day. I think we need to protest the city council’s decision. “Don’t you think so?” Next on discussion today is that Whitney Houston has died. They ...

Evaluate Effects of Globalisation on Medias Role in Society

...Evaluate the effects of globalisation on the role of the media in society over the past thirty years or so (33 marks) Over the last 30 years’ globalisation has influenced media in many different ways, however these effects can have advantages and disadvantages. One of the effects globalisation has that is visible is that communication has become wide spread. Over the last few years, magazines, newspapers, the internet and television have spread news worldwide and helped people come together. Globalisation is the growing interdependence of the world with the spread of culture, goods and economics globally. One of the effects of globalisation is that the there are less national media outlets, as the majority are now international due to globalisation increasing over the last thirty years, the media conglomerates are now dominating as the media is dominated by only a small number of corporations, meaning the content available globally is not varied as society thinks. From globalisation media outlets have become international, and this has an effect on the role of the media, which is that it is promoting only one culture as a viable choice, the American culture, as many things that are globalised and known worldwide as from the states, for example Apple, McDonald’s and Disney are a few to name. Most of the corporations are American based, which is the reason likely why it is the American culture being the only choice as more power is set in that one country. This is restricting...

The Visual Inveiglement

...Abstract With the rapid decline of cultures moral conduct regarding thought, behavior, and along with physiological changes it leaves the looming question of why or who is responsible. Many would like to place blame on the content of television media. Clearly it provokes an interest to look at the affects that TV and media are playing. After all, the culture does seem to be headed towards a moral bankruptcy and an increasing obesity rate compared to fifty years ago. Such research conducted by Aric Sigman PH.D. in his book, Remotely Controlled, discusses these realities and brings to light the hidden truths of televisions and the effects it is taken on the moral downslide. THE VISUAL INVEIGLEMENT OF TELEVISION 3 The Visual Inveiglement of Television Television media is impacting the populace 24/7 in today’s world; there is no escaping its influence upon society and culture. There is a surging wave of change that is being created by this, and few seem to acknowledge or understand the perennial percussion of it. Douglas S. Winnail, from Tomorrow’s world (2003), makes reference to television having an insidious side with prodigious conductivity to leverage culture, making it the apex of an “effective propaganda vehicle” accessible today (para. 5). The visual inveiglement that encases’ the composition of television affects thought, behavior, and...

...situations we never thought we would be in. So many people are wondering where their next meal will come from, the problem is these individuals are not even unemployed. Employed people in this economy are facing many economical hardships and have to change their way of living. WIC, The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children is a Federal assistance program of the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for healthcare and nutrition of low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants and children under the age of five has seen increase in the past five years growing from 8,088,005 to 9,176,736 participants [ (FNS USDA, 2011) ]. Many families that participate in the WIC program are military families in the U.S. military, I find it sad that the families who sacrifice for our freedom are stretched so thin that they need programs such as WIC. Many families use all of their coupons given to them to purchase food however many have found that the foods are sometimes what they don’t need, many wish they had more variety of fruits and vegetables instead of cereal, juice and peanut butter. Many families can’t use all the items they receive because their families don’t like what they are able to get or they don’t know what to use it for. Ruby Tuesday

...ordering my food due to indecisiveness. The things that I noticed to be Ruby Tuesday’s strengths are the quality of customer service they offer and the salad bar option. Although the restaurant is one of my favorite I think that the lighting could be better and the pricing on the food can be lower. Overall Ruby Tuesday is a great restaurant as they are able to stand out by including the salad bar in casual dining. As most restaurants do Ruby Tuesday is no different when it comes to making the menu editable. I love to try different foods when I go out with my family and it tends to be harder when all menu items look good. Like most restaurants Ruby Tuesday has pictures on the menu and they also have signature daily dishes. Implementing daily food items makes the restaurant meet fine dining expectations to be in the market of competition with restaurants like Arizona’s. Arizona’s is a very high end restaurant that have chefs that decide on daily menu items. With Ruby Tuesday picking up this as an option it is giving fine dining restaurants some competition because they have lower prices. The salad bar offered by Ruby Tuesday is an amazing experience as most restaurants serve salad with meals but you are able to prepare your own at Ruby Tuesday. The company has this to make the dining more personal as you can prepare your salad just the way you like it. When a person thinks of Ruby Tuesday, he or she connects images of it to other restaurants offering fast food and others providing...
