Chapter 9: Global Market Entry Strategies
The need for a solid market entry decision is an integral part of a global market entry strategy. Entry decisions will heavily influence the firm’s other marketing-mix decisions. Global marketers have to make a multitude of decisions regarding the entry mode, which may include: * (1) The target product/market * (2) The goals of the target markets * (3) The mode of entry * (4) The time of entry * (5) A marketing-mix plan * (6) A control system to check the performance in the entered markets 1. Target Market Selection
A crucial step in developing a global expansion strategy is the selection of potential target markets.
A four-step procedure for the initial screening process: 1. Select indicators and collect data 2. Determine importance of country indicators 3. Rate the countries in the pool on each indicator 4. Compute overall score for each country 2. Choosing the Mode of Entry
Decision Criteria for Mode of Entry: * Market Size and Growth * Risk * Government Regulations * Competitive Environment/Cultural Distance * Local Infrastructure
Classification of Markets: * Platform Countries (Singapore & Hong Kong) * Emerging Countries (Vietnam & the Philippines) * Growth Countries (China & India) * Maturing and established countries (examples: South Korea, Taiwan & Japan)
Key criteria for choosing entry modes: * Company Objectives * Need for Control * Internal Resources, Assets and Capabilities * Flexibility
Mode of Entry Choice: A Transaction Cost Explanation * Regarding entry modes, companies normally face a tradeoff between the benefits of increased control and the costs of resource commitment and risk. * Transaction Cost Analysis (TCA) perspective * Transaction-Specific Assets (assets

Going Global

...Defending a Domestic Position against Global Entries Abstract The paper offers a systematic review of strategic options available to incumbents coping with threats and attacks by a global firm. The framework makes it possible to review and analyze action alternatives based on the entry stage, the attack focus and defense tactics. Even though the globalization process has exposed domestic incumbents to greater threats, incumbents’ options have also increased. The doors of trade liberalization swing both ways. Opportunities for collaboration increase while anti-globalization movements and national patriotism can be mobilized for effective defense.. The framework presented in this paper builds on existing strategic theories and concepts in addition to published case studies. It offers a flexible and dynamic approach for reviewing alternative strategies for implementation and research. Strategy

...Strategy in the Global Environment Synopsis of Chapter This chapter looks at the strategies companies adopt when they expand outside their domestic marketplace and start to compete on a global basis. The chapter opens by discussing how global expansion creates value for a company. The focus is on the ability of global companies to transfer distinctive competencies across national markets, to realize location economies from basing individual value-creation activities in the optimal location for that activity, and to ride down the experience curve more rapidly than competitors that are focused on just their domestic market. Next the chapter examines two types of competitive pressures that firms competing in the global marketplace typically face: pressures for cost reductions and pressures to be responsive to local conditions. These pressures place conflicting demands on a company. The sources of pressures for cost reductions and pressures for local responsiveness are explored. The discussion then turns to the different strategies that companies can pursue in the global arena. Four different strategies are reviewed in some detail—an international strategy, a multidomestic strategy, a global strategy, and a transnational strategy. The pros and cons of each of these strategies are debated. A link is made between the appropriateness of different strategies and the pressures for cost reductions and local responsiveness. It is suggested that the optimal strategy is contingent...

Modes of Entry When Entering International Market Management Essay

...International business or Global marketing is growing at a fast rate and there are more than 180 nations-sates in the world with different market and profitable potential. General Understanding of International marketing refers to marketing of goods and services from one country to another. Producing and marketing of products in more than one country is also termed as international or multinational marketing. But according to Mc Auley (2001) International marketing can be defined quite simply as “the performance of business activities that direct the flow of a company’s goods and services to consumers or users in more than one nation for a profit” much similar to domestic marketing. However Kahler (1983) argues and identifies that “International marketing differs from domestic marketing for one basic reason: it involves doing business with individuals, firms, organizations, and/or government entities in other countries”. The author further argues that the difference...

Firms from Malaysia, as a developing country, with a fast growing economy that increasingly relies on services have shown a remarkable expansion into foreign markets, which has resulted in high foreign direct investment (FDI) outward inflows and increasing exports of services. This paper utilizes the resource-based theory, in which the main determinants of the choice of entry mode are organizational variables compared to environmental factors, to explain the choice of entry strategies made by Malaysian service firms and the motives for it. This study aims to develop a framework for the choice of entry mode strategies that has fewer shortages than others, analyze the determinants of entry mode strategy in order to find the similarities and differences existing between firms in the decision-making process for the choice of entry mode, and consider the role of psychic distance in adopting an appropriate strategy in different markets.
