...Queer Essay On Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone A queer reading of Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone can bring up many questions of what is classed as normal. It also can show how a subculture within that society is regarded as abnormal. It can suggest that the everyday world in this novel is queer compared to the wizard world which is seen as the norm. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s Epistemology of the closet suggests that queer reading should not be from the readers own sexuality in mind, but an openness to the queer context, connections and potentials already available within the text. Bennett and Royle suggest that “some of the strangeness or uncanniness, some of the power and fascination of literary texts, that is to say has to do with the singular space which they offer for thinking differently about gender and sexuality” As Harry potter is a young adults novel that is stable for a queer reading as it traditional is a none sexual fantasy novel. Harry Potter is seen as a world parallel to our own where it has differences in people and their cultures. However no where in the novel does it mention anything about homosexuality, gender role bending, or same sex relationships. Every relationship that forms is with a character from the opposite sex and the family is mostly typical nuclear form of the mother staying at home while the father goes to work. There is no mention of a gay, lesbian or transgender character mentioned in the story. If the novel is...

...While “[h]istorically, nurses deferred to physicians,” (Hoeve, Jansen, Roodbol, 2013, p. 296), this is still seen as the case within most media, including Harry Potter. For example, during the sixth book of the series, a student suffers an injury, and instead of Madam Pomfrey treating the student, as is her job, another professor who was seen as more competent in regards to the injury, preformed the treatment, before the student was transferred to the books equivalent of a hospital. This instance shows that even though nurses might be recognized as medical professionals, the media still does not promote this fact. Nevertheless, there has been an obvious response to the misinformation on nursing in the media, with nurses collaborating, and speaking up to correct, and dismantle the negative stereotypes that they are subjected...

...Bryntirion. Finally I’ll say how the industry should change and how it can be made more aware off in schools. First let’s start with how women were treated in films in the early 1900’s. Women were always given the role as the housewife’s, the weak victim who need a male hero to save them or the slag of the film. Everyone thinks the industry has made lots of progress since then. However the scary fact is, the only thing that has changed is the time period. From 2007 to 2012, The...

...research was done using the one topic that segregates men from women that is their choices. When it comes to choosing novels it is assumed in most cases that women prefer thrillers and romantic genre while men prefer more mystery genre but through my research I have come to conclusions with the fact that the novel choices of men are less emotional when compared to women but there are a few cases of exceptions. The purpose of this research paper was to find out whether females still read more emotional centered novels than males using survey techniques. Key Terms: Emotions, Gender, Novels This research was conducted for the purpose of understanding human behaviors and gender stereotypes within those behaviors. Emotions are an important aspect for humans to make judgments and choices (Huebner, Dwyer, & Hauser, 2009) hence my research will be based on the choices we make and whether gender plays a role in it or not. Objectives Primary Objective: * To find out whether there are male students who choose emotional novels as compared to females in Manipal University, Dubai. Also, whether females do not choose to read emotional novels regardless of the general stereotype of their emotional behavior. Secondary Objective: * To find out what genres of novels the students of Manipal University prefer * To find out their favorite novelists * To find out which sex reads the most number of novels Literature Review A novel is a fictitious prose narrative of book...

...Sociologists suggests, there exists difference between sex and gender. Sex is the biological classification and gender is the outcome of social construction of separate roles of males and females. “,,what we call ‘men and ‘women’ are bodies that have generally been trainedin either the interruption of desire (women) or its free flow (men)..” – Halberstein (Gaga Feminism 2012: 12) Masculinity and femininity, or other gender roles such as androgyny, are not inborn that is children are taught these traits. As soon as a child is identified as being a male or female then everybody start treating him or her as such. Children learn to move in gendered ways through the support of their environment. They are taught the gendered roles projected by someone who is female or male. As the child grows up, he develops his identity, to know how to interact with others and learn the role to play in the society. (Lorber, Judith. 2005.) There are many drivers involved in the socialization process, which transfers the traditional role to the children and henceforth leading to occupational segregation later on. One set of gender socialization occur between parents and offspring, parents are considered to be the primary agency in the process of socialization, they are inclined to interact with boys and girls in a discrete manner. One of the most influential driver of the socialization process is the mass media. In mainstream media, stereotyping is a standard way of characterizing people, leading...

...Being a ‘Team’ Player: The Linguistic Alteration of Identity in Online Communities Dedicated to The Hunger Games In the first chapter of Gender and Language, Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet discuss how the connection between language and gender enables a “continual performance” of gendered interactions (33), which, in turn, enables “social reproduction” founded on the separate categories of male and female. They argue that language not only reflects gendered categories but “constructs and maintains these categories” (34). Being such strong categories, they claim it is “impossible” to escape gendered behavior and not influence others to give gendered responses (50). In a later chapter, Eckert and McConnell-Ginet discuss how “gender schemas and ideologies” are implied and interpreted (203). Using an example from a university setting, the authors illustrate their point that the assumption of gender may not result from “the particulars of our exchange but in familiar gender stereotypes” (204). If no specific clues or pronouns are given during the exchange of information, presuppositions relying on stereotypes often emerge. Not only do stereotypes and behavior fill the linguistic gaps, but the power in individual words alone is a cause for concern. Sally McConnell-Ginet explores this further in her article “Words in the World: How and Why Meanings Can Matter.” She argues that single words can carry multiple meanings in each use whether the speaker means them to or not...

...The word feminism is defined as the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. The word feminism has a negative connotation in today's society, but many activists are working to fight this stigma. In order to persuade the nation towards gender equality, Emma Watson delivered her “Gender Equality is Your Issue too” speech to the country to promote her launch of the HeforShe campaign. The first way Watson achieves her purposes is by using pathos to appeal to the nations emotions. Watson discusses growing up and being a victim of gender inequality; “When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press” (Watson). She does this to appeal to the public's emotions. Doing this, she is persuading the audience...

...foregoing, there is an ongoing debate about gender-based marketing and in particular with gender-based marketing being focused on young children. . One of the events that triggered this debate was when LEGO came out with a product line for girls called Friends. The TV ad shows wonderful town of Heartlake where “Stephanie” and her friends get to enjoy “all the things girls love”: interior decorating, getting pedicures and baking cupcakes. The sets feature taller and shapelier feminine figurines that lock into pink, purple and pastel green settings, such as a dream house, a splash pool and a beauty shop. LEGO has created this product based on four years of behavioral research. This research purportedly led them to the conclusion that girls like everything pink, romantic and cute [5]. The product has generated outrage. The company was accused by many parents of feeding kids the gender stereotypes and locking them in to blue and pink roles in very young age. Marketing to children is even more of a grey area than marketing to women. When it comes to child psychology the foundation of any debate is the question as to whether their tastes are a product of either nature or nurture. The recent research leads to conclusion that a lot of nature is actually nurtured [6]. Such things as taste, social norms, roles and behavior form as a result of our experiences and observations. It’s not a secret that to this day, even in western society, gender roles are clearly defined and imposed through...
