...Essay #4 “On the Subway” is about the complex connection between whites and blacks. In the first stanza the author shows an account that compares a black person with a white person (lines 1-13). And then in the second stanza the author starts to show the obvious inconsistencies so that inter relationships surface. In the third stanza the author gives insight on to how the scene is parallel to American culture on a larger scale. Olds uses imagery to show the significant difference between the black boy (the observed), the white woman (the narrator) and the observer as they all sit in the same subway. The main focus of the stanza is his sneakers that are black “laced with white”. The white woman describes the white laces as “intentional scars”. These “scars” are supposed to show the reader the discrimination of blacks by white society. The use of the word intentional shows the reader that the whites intended to harm blacks mentally and physically on purpose. This image compares blacks and whites by saying that whites are powerful and blacks are meant to be compliant. The two characters are on two opposite sides of the train, stuck there, and permanently separated from each other. Next the clothing is describes and is used as another contrasting element. In this image the black boy is “exposed” opposed to the white person who is covered in fur. The image is used to reinforce the opposition. In the second stanza the tone change…In the first...

...Boston Subway System “One of the biggest plans unveiled by Governor Patrick is a $1.3 billion project by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to replace and increase the capacity of the 44-year-old Red Line subway cars and the 32-year-old Orange Line cars.”It was reported by the Associated Press in the news “Patrick announces major transportation projects” on the website “http://www.boston.com” on October 22, 2013. We take trains frequently in our daily life in Boston. It’s good news for the people living here. The subway system is an important part of Boston transportation, which has a long history of over one hundred year. But it is too antiqued for the contemporary people, so there are many suggestions and projects to improve the subway system. Compared with the Wuhan subway system, I think some suggestions and projects are impractical for the improvement of Boston subway system, therefore I want to oppose them. Most of the people in Boston thought that the subway system lacks late-night or overnight service. People want to extend the service hours.(Annear) But from my point of view, the Boston subway system’s service hours should be reduced. First, I often ride the orange line at night when I go to the school gym to do some exercise after supper and stay very late. So I can know that very few people ride trains after 10:00 p.m; there are usually less than ten people inside every subway car. It is obvious that the extension of service hours is a waste...

...“On the Subway” by Sharon Olds “On the Subway” is a poem illustrated by Sharon Olds that distinguishes the worlds of a prosperous Caucasian woman and a deprived African American man through the sense of trepidation, vagueness, disparity, and municipal tension. The two characters contain numerous contrasting personalities, and the writer utilizes fictional methods such as tone, poetic devices, and imagery to depict these distinctions. The storyteller is the Caucasian lady, and she understands how natives get "trapped" in places of humanity base on their skin color. The poem is shifted into three divisions to articulate the intricate affiliation among Caucasians and African Americans. The metaphors Olds uses in the first part accentuates the disparities among the Caucasian lady who is the storyteller as well as the spectator and the African American young man, who is the pragmatic, while both of them are traveling on the channel. The shoes he has on are black crisscrossed through pasty. The narrator portrays the pasty meander as "deliberate disfigurement”. The disfigurement alludes to the inequity against the African American male by Caucasian humanity. The adjective "intended" indicates that Caucasians deliberately hurt African Americans. The picture distinct Caucasians among African Americans: Caucasians are authoritative; African Americans are submissive. “Correspondingly, the lady and the young man are portrayed like "trapped on conflicting sides" of the subway car; they are...

...in the story are named after subway stations in London; another way we can tell is the characters statements about the city: “Cathy had been at work, so the boyfriend had shown him around London” (p. 64, l. 25 - 26). The story unfolds in the subway’s underground system of London in the late 19’hundreds but could as well be set as today, because the way our characters describe their surroundings: “You couldn’t walk, always it had to be busses and what the English called the tubes” (p. 64, l. 29-30). Here we get an impression of a modern city where everything has to be fast and there is no time to waste. All of the main characters meet in the underground system at the end of the story. All the characters are placed here and throughout the story we hear their individual stories and get an impression of how they are and how their personalities are, these flashbacks and changes between the different characters can make it confusing at the beginning of the story, but at the end it makes good sense. This is a post modernistic narrative technique, and it is used because we have to hear the story from everyone’s point of view, to understand what is going on. I think the narrator has chosen the city of London because it’s a modern world city where everything has to go fast and it’s easy to get confused like Berto got. The title is called The Red Line. I think the narrator probably has chosen this topic because of the setting Berto is in, he sits in the subway on the line he think is the...

...Azerbaijan population lives in its capital. Obviously, this fact contributes to different social problems, and I would say the biggest and main problem of Baku is the traffic situation. So we can attribute to this term all means of conveyance (private vehicles, taxi, buses, subway, tram, etc.). Although the majority of people use the public transport here, every day we encounter with severe traffic jams on main streets and avenues. As the government and relevant organizations have not facilitated traffic conditions yet, both private vehicle owners and public transport users face with particular problems very frequently. The problem has a number of branches. To recognize all of them we should consider them separately. Card System Only several bus lines have applied the card system (see Picture 1) in their vehicles, whereas the drivers of the remaining portion of buses are still receiving coins from passengers. Doubtlessly, the card system would improve many negative features of buses. For example, if we use cards we will not have to contact with drivers, pass them money and wait for change. The project has been launched already, but has not been applied for all buses. Apart from buses these cards can be used for subway as well. Picture 1 Timetables Although there are approved routes for each bus line, people could not find them in bus stations’ monitor screens and moreover there are no available timetables (see Picture 2 for a typical bus timetable) near the bus stations. Thus...

...Theory. Through this we will explore how the Japanese still live by rather traditional cultural standards compared to our own. A Factual History Japan has a land mass bigger then Germany but smaller then Calfifornia and has a population of 127.3 million residents (Sherpa, 2014). Tokyo, which contains 13 million people within the city and additional 32.5 million people in the surrounding area, is the capital city and additionally the largest metropolitan area in the world (Lovino, 2014). Due to this accommodations are cramped, doors slide open to save room, apartments can be the size of a walk in closet and hotels are developed that only offer you a capsule to sleep in (Lovino, 2014). Another famous aspect of this cramped culture is the subway system which is used by millions each day and has staff which is used to pack in passengers into the cars (Lovino, 2014). Tokyo is known for being a clean city with fresh healthy food and a cultural focus on forward thinking for both technology and fashion (Lovino, 2014). Every two months a local district of Japan holds a big street party called the Harajuku Fashion Walk where hundreds of people gather to show off their latest fashion choices and the...

First, we went to Go-kart derby although were one of the last ones so, we barely had any time to put our own seat belts. ...plants between the road and sidewalk) were covered in garbage - when this garbage remained for weeks, I began to wonder why nothing was cleaned up. The question came to mind, 'does anyone here care what their city looks like?' The Polish students in Sabinki told me that they never give money to people on the street because there are many easy jobs that the government provides for them to make money. After I learned that, I really thought that no one cared; however, always in my mind was the expectation that there would be a 'spring cleaning' after the snow stopped precipitating. Now that spring is here, my hypothesis was shown to be correct, and there has been a large change in the amount of garbage in the streets, even the roads, sidewalks and medians have been well swept - it is quite pleasant. One thing that I now realize is very important for me, and something that I took for-granted, is excellent air quality. Since in Canada the wind has a tendency to blow to the east, the air that I breathe is fresh, and relatively pollution free, ocean air. Sometimes I do not notice the air quality in Poland though sometimes I feel like I need to cover my mouth. The smell that really gets to me is not normal emissions - sometimes I experience the toxic smell of poorly burnt oil. A friend of mine has an old oil burner that he uses to burn his used engine oil -...

...her. In Minnesota it is the custom to greet everyone you meet on the road, even though you do not know the person. If you pass someone in silence, you will be considered as discourteous and it can lead to accusations of snobbery. This is the worst and rudest possible thing you can do and it gets compared as a sin in the egalitarian state. A good place to start is the title of the essay ‘Living With Strangers’, because it sums up the thesis in the text and Hustvedt’s point with the text. The title refers to a major problem in every city - whether it is a big or small one, and it is because the society that we live in now has changed and is still changing. The late modern society is characterized by the fact, that we no longer are bound by old traditions and habits. We are instead living in our own little bubble and we consider it opposite the people in Minnesota rude for someone to perforate it and talk to us. It is like a mentality we have that does not change. Although we are surrounded by many people and always are in intimating contact with people, it is still as we are living with strangers and there is like a wall between us and them – that keeps us isolated...
