...Welcome family, friends, and faculty to the South Whidbey Academy graduation of 2016. The office we use for the last 4 years is the same room I spent my 1st-grade year of school. A special teacher, Mrs. Irene Talbot gave me my start of formal education. My mom was able to volunteer that 1st grade year which she now describes as the best year of her life. SWA enabled the diverse, unique students to overcome obstacles that a traditional High School would not allow them the flexibility to reach their full potential. With the help of a dedicated and friendly staff of educators, each student at SWA has an individual plan toward graduation. In my experience, I chose to split my time between SWHS and SWA to gain self-determination in finishing my...

...One of the best experiences I had was being in the Rummel/Chapelle Band program for all of high school. Doing band is the best decision I made. Every year we begin with marching season. The band creates a field show ever year and performs that field show during football halftime. Also we go to many different marching competition throughout the beginning of school. We also do a veteran's day concert and Christmas concert every year. After the first semester of school we go into my favorite part of band the spring season. I also audition for junior high honor band and made...

...Title Robert Winn’s experience in high school history was not a positive one. His teachers for that subject were far from supporting and did not instill the love of the subject in their students. What lead him to the idea of becoming a history professor and getting his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America was his English teacher. His English teacher tied in history with the regular class work. At that moment, Professor Winn was hooked, and he knew that he only wanted to teach in college. Like most education students, Professor Winn student taught through his student years, but it was not until graduate school that he got his first teaching job as a fill in for a class. After he finished his degree, he taught for 3 years at Creighton...

...Throughout the past two years I have been part of many extracurricular activities, volunteer, and work experiences that have enriched my high school experience. I was the captain of the girls cross country team and of the track and field team. I was responsible of leading the runners throughout workouts and races with positivity. I also have been an active member in clubs including Medi-careers and Hispanic Youth Leadership Council. Medi-careers club gave me the opportunity to learn about different professions in the medical field. In the Hispanic Youth Leadership Council club, I have worked with others to spread the Hispanic culture through events that spread the unique traditions. Helping others overcome economic and psychological challenges has truly help form the person I am today. I have volunteered at the Salvation Army by serving food to homeless individuals on Sundays. Sometimes the community forgets about homeless individuals and they are human beings who need support. They share their hardships with me and I try to be someone they can talk to so they don't feel lonely. I have also volunteered in Project Blanket which is an organization that helps make fleece blankets for low-income individuals and for cancer patients. We then distribute the blankets to local hospitals and churches....

...you about my high school experience. I’ll start by telling you the beginning where this whole experience started, freshman year. Then I’ll go in chronogically order all the way to senior year. In the beginning of freshman year, i was a nervous wreck. I am a shy person and mostly all my friends from middle school went to another high school, so I was all alone. The worst part was that I had to introduce myself to complete strangers and not only that, my face turns super red and my voice can begin to shake. As the months went by I began to turn into someone I wasn’t just so I can fit in, little did I know that that was a complete waste of time. As a freshman all I could think of was becoming popular and trying to act cool by dressing up with some apparel that I...

...I began running cross country in the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school. I started running as a way to stay active and as a stress relieving mechanism from the pressures of school. However, to my surprise, I quickly developed a love for the sport and enjoyed being part of something larger than myself. Running soon became the highlight of my high school experience. Being on the team taught me a significant amount about sportsmanship and the fundamentals of training. As a result I became a better runner and person. This all came to an end once I broke my foot my senior year of high school. The meet I had been looking forward to the most throughout my senior year was an annual race my school hosted called Jungle Run....

...Being raised by an impoverished Hispanic family led to my parents desiring the very best for me. A preconception that friends were distractions and that education was the first priority was instilled within me from a very young age. At first, throughout my years in Meadowbrook Elementary and Seminole Middle school, I was able to keep up with all of my academics by myself. Soon, however, this concept of a free for all environment within a high school setting was, in hindsight, a disadvantage in the long run. By not creating those ever-lasting connections with other students from an early age, I entered high school as a lone wolf, which resulted in carrying all of my academics on my own shoulder compared to others who worked amongst each other to be more...

...Luverne Koerselman (Grandpa) Interview How was your Elementary, Middle, and High school experience? I grew up West of Matlock and went to school in Matlock. No matter the weather, my older brother, older sister, along with myself, had to walk to school every morning. This walk, or bike ride, was about a half mile and sometimes in the winter people would offer to drive us to school which was very kind of them. But sadly, I was quite shy and never accepted their offer, so in turn, my sister nor my brother could take the ride either because they couldn’t leave me alone. My mom didn’t have a license and my dad worked at the elevator in Matlock and didn’t have time to drive us. This...

...Introduction After completing the Student Teacher Residency program where I had a full year student teaching experience at DCIS Montbello teaching Biology, I got my first full time teaching job at Legacy Options High School. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds for a variety of reasons. Legacy Options is a pathway school specializing in credit recovery. In my classroom I receive a new group of students every twelve weeks. Many of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs). All of our current students are from a minority population including: African American. American Indian, Vietnamese, Hispanic, and Haitian. Many of my students are undocumented and from low income families. All of my students have self declared their commitment to their educations during their interview to be accepted to the school. Due to the environment at Legacy Options students are accepted only after passing application and interview with principal. That being said, if a student has proven through actions that they go in front of a panel of teachers and staff members and plead their case to stay. Then the staff votes. I have only seen this happen with three students...

...The transition from middle school to high school was a very important experience, that I feel helped to develop me into the person that I am today. Even though the change in schedule, lunch, and the classes that you can choose to take, made the change a much more difficult change to process, now that I have adjusted to it, the transition has been a much smoother one. My middle school experience was a very generic and not interesting one, but it was an experience that had helped me to make many friends. It had also helped solidify my love of new experiences, learning, and overall improving myself as a person. Even though this was a pleasant time for me, the move to the high school from middle school was a very big step that had taken much adjusting...

...What is the next step after graduating high school? It is that time of year where students are graduating from high school and planning to further their education. If you were like me last year, you are more than likely wondering what is expected at college. When I first started college I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect or what was expected of me. Now, I feel college life is so much more enjoyable then high school. I have so much more control over my education and more freedom. This paper will address the main differences from high school to college such as college scene, academic level, and rewarding experience. A college scene has a different scene then high school. Social activities are one of the biggest differences transitioning from high school to college. I think the social scene is so much more different than high school because you have more freedom such as choice of college and residence. You have the ability to choose where to reside at whether it is on campus or outside of campus. Most students attending college live on campus and experience the unsupervised and independent lifestyle. At college you will be experiencing your own rules and living on your own. Therefore, you will be subjected to different social activities. This means they are subjected to pressure and temptations. It is important to choose activities that you are comfortable with and not letting someone else pressure you into something you don’t believe in. At college people...

...Education or Experience? It Depends. Shai Walker Webster University Author Note This paper was prepared for Staffing and Selection HRMG 5800, Section 54, taught by Professor Karns. Abstract Can experience make up for the lack of a degree, or does a degree provide something that experience cannot? Is one more valuable than the other? Talk about a discussion that will have you chasing your tail! It's truly a trap debate because the right answer is "it depends". Whether it's a completely strategic discussion about your organization's policies or a discussion involving a specific position and candidate, this issue continually resurfaces at organizations. And depending on what side of the fence you sit, this issue can be very personal and emotional. Obviously, there are specific cases where the question is debatable. If you need a registered professional engineer to approve plans, the degree requirement is a given. If you're a hospital looking for a surgeon, you're probably seeking someone with a PhD in medicine. However, the scope of positions that may or may not require a degree gets gray pretty fast, and the span is pretty wide. And, no industry is immune to this issue. Keywords: experience, degree, organizations, policies, professional, requirement, industry. Education or Experience? It Depends. Take this scenario: Bob and Joe are both applying for the same job. They each interview well, but Bob has 15 years’ experience and no college degree, and Joe is fresh...

...Autobiography (LAB #1): Formal and Informal Experiences Alexander J. Polewczynski 24 January 2016 LAS 20010 College Seminar I: Exploring Ottawa University Formal and Informal Educational Experiences To describe my education, I need to take you back to my early childhood years. The community of Dousman produced Olympic Athletes, must have been the outstanding educational system there. I had first attended school in Dousman at the Elementary school. Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect that designed many magnificent structures. He even designed the Jr High I attended. A very unique experience. High School was a turbulent ride as I attended three different schools. My father was living in another state so the main support for a young boy in school was not there. As a result, the learning environment was somewhat diminished and many questions went unanswered. Formal Educational Experiences Dousman Elementary School is located in Waukesha County twenty minutes from Milwaukee, in Wisconsin. The school was walking distance from my residence but as a child it felt like miles. I received an education that produced grades a bit higher than average. The curriculum was considered to be accelerated, which I found was difficult to keep pace with. The theory of learning faster was a pretty fresh idea at Dousman Elementary and I think the students were lagging behind, as I was, at least some of the time. My friends in elementary school were true friends but there were not that many...
