...“Let America Be America Again” is a poem not about just one group of people, but about African Americans, immigrants, poor white people, American Indians, and any and all groups who have been left out. When Mr. Hughes says: “I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek— And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.” (Hughes 697) He speaking is for everyone, except the rich and privileged as we see in the line that says: Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need! Of work the men! Of take the pay! Of owning everything for one’s own greed (Hughes 697) It is important for us all to remember this land is for everyone, not just the privileged. Reading this poem and passing it on to others is a good way to remember what this country initially stood for and what most people are still fighting for. At one time America stood for liberty, equality, and the land of the free. When Mr. Hughes states “Let it be the dream it used to be” and “America never was America to me” we understand that he never has felt America was equal or free, but we also see that Mr. Hughes wants America to fulfill the promises of freedom, liberty, and equality. I enjoyed this part of the poem because it reminded me of why people came to this country and still come to this country...

...Remarks by the President at the Human Rights Campaign's Annual National Dinner Washington Convention Center Washington, D.C. 7:26 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you so much. It is great to be back. (Applause.) I see a lot of friends in the house. I appreciate the chance to join you tonight. I also took a trip out to California last week, where I held some productive bilateral talks with your leader, Lady Gaga. (Laughter.) She was wearing 16-inch heels. (Laughter.) She was eight feet tall. (Laughter.) It was a little intimidating. Now, I don’t want to give a long speech. Cyndi Lauper is in the house. I can’t compete with that. (Applause.) But I wanted to come here tonight, first of all, to personally thank Joe for his outstanding years of leadership at HRC. (Applause.) What he has accomplished at the helm of this organization has been remarkable, and I want to thank all of you for the support that you’ve shown this organization and for your commitment to a simple idea: Every single American -- gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender -- every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition. (Applause.) Now, I don’t have to tell you that we have a ways to go in that struggle. I don’t have to tell you how many are still denied their basic rights -- Americans who are still made to feel like second-class citizens, who have to live a lie to keep their jobs, or who are afraid to walk the street...

...People of America! I am standing here today to tell you that America need to change. It needs to change for the better. Too many issues have increased and the American dream is far from how we know it. I grew up thinking America was the country where all dreams come true. I still believe it is. We just need to take a seriously look in the mirror, and ask ourselves, whether we can live with the system we are living in, or not. The American Dream should be possible for anyone. Black, white, female, male, hetero or gay - everyone should have the possibility to persuade the American dream. But the reality wants different things. As it is today, young children, sometimes infants, are brought to this country by their parents. They grow up with an American feeling in their heart and mind. They play in the streets. They go to our school. They are Americans, like everyone else, in every single way, but one: on paper. Through their entire life, they live in fear of deportation. Even though they worked hard, studied hard, and achieve great success, they still face a risk of going home to a country they might not even know. Deporting these young Americans are deporting the possibility of the next great genius. Everyone can become something big, if they have the will and the strength to do it. These are future soldiers, scientists or highly successful politicians. I want everyone to be able to persuade the American Dream and achieve great success, and that is why I will make sure every...

...What do I see in America? From broadcasts to the latest news shown on media, there is always good and bad. Either way, I think that America can always change for the better. I believe that we all can receive equality, that we all can have our freedom, and that we all can protest against the unnecessary violence that still takes place in America. We can, if we're all in it. Everyone should be treated equally. Regardless of their race or gender, no one is equalled more just because they appear as a female or male, or they come from a different culture. It's what's in them that counts, not stereotyping from what they seem to be. Don't claim the value or worth of a person just by what you see from their appearance. You never know, one of them could...

...“A world so hateful that some people would rather die than be who they are.”-Unknown. It breaks my heart to know that this is true. Each year 1 million people commit suicide. The people of America I know want to stop this from happening. The America I want to live in, is a place where everyone treats each other the same. There would not be problems with religion, race, sexuality, gender, age, culture, and much more. The America I want to live in does not ‘judge a book by its cover’. The America I want to live in is a place where people accept each other based on their personality, not what they look like or talk like. The United States is a place with much diversity. Diversity makes us unique and special. Although diversity also seems to be...

...society. He also speaks out on issues that he believes are very important to black America such as Nihilism, his views and the views of Liberal Structuralists and the conservative behaviorists, and the crisis of no leadership in black America. These to me are the important themes that need to be shown in order for there to be change in society. Before one goes into the views of the two comps and leadership issue one must understand the importance of Nihilism. Nihilism in definition is the total rejection of laws and institutions already established. However West’s makes it more than this as he makes references in his work that it has now become a disease, “ Like alcoholism and drug addiction, nihilism is a disease of the soul”. He continues on making references that this “virus” cannot be completely cured but it can be stopped and have its effects reversed. He believes that this threat of nihilism in black America cannot be stopped merely debates and analyzing the situation but can be controlled by love and care. Through these two cures it will give people a chance to believe that there is hope for the future and give meaning to struggle. With these two factors it supposedly increases the modes of self-valuation and encouraging political resistance in an individual’s community. West’s also believes that a major strategy is to attack the sense of worthlessness and self loathing in black America. These are from the results of the structure dynamics of corporate market, emotional...

...As a young citizen in the United States of America, my responsibility is to learn the history of my country throughout the many years of education I am provided. And as I become an adult, I will be responsible to be the one to teach others my experiences in life, to teach what experiences worked out and what experiences failed horribly . My responsibility is to learn how to apply what I learned in school and what I was taught at home to better my chances with success in the future, to have more knowledge and create my own opinion as I work through the industrious life of adulthood. You learn a lot of things in school that you believe that are useless to you in your adult life. That is where you and so many people are wrong. Because, whether you know it or not, you use most of everything you remember in school, everyday in your life. In the case that I am talking about, is the fact that when we learn about the history of America and what had to be done to get here, is very important to know because it shows you what worked then and how their seemingly small decisions, led to monumental changes. The past is only a guide to aid in a better future that I hope we will bring....

...The Committee of Public Information was created to change public opinion about World War I. They wanted Americans to support the war by enlisting or buying war bonds, overall they wanted everyone to help with the war. The government needed a way to influence the citizens and war propaganda was very effective. The government needs to change public opinion times of war. The public on its own will not instantly enlist and buy war bonds. The government need the American people to feel united and equal, is that really bad? Having the government manipulate the people is risky but in some circumstances it is necessary. The cartoon with Uncle Sam, is an example of the government using propaganda to make the people feel like they are need in the war,...

Plutocracy is a political system where the wealthy rule. Examples of plutocracies throughout the years include the Empire of Japan before WWII, some city-states in Ancient Greece, Carthage, and the Roman Republic. (Wikipedia, 2011) It’s not surprising that places such as these were plutocracies. Wealth can easily be converted into power and power can easily be used for political control. Systems such as these have an immense disparity between those that are wealthy and those that are not because once you are wealthy you can use that to become even more wealthy which leads to more power and if desired, more political control. (Warden, 2008) Before WWII Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany referred to western democratic states, such as the United States of America and Great Britain, as plutocracies. They implied that a small number of extremely wealthy individuals were controlling these countries and holding them ransom. (Wikipedia, 2011) While this may sound completely untrue there is more merit to this implication than meets the eye. Is America a Plutocracy? Yes, America is a plutocracy. We may think of ourselves...

...American Literature October 9, 2014 What we think about America today is not how America was in the 1700’s. Much thought should go into how this country was made from the very beginnings and the struggles that the early Americans went through. Before the Revolutionary War, some people might not think about it, America was ruled by the British. The British had set up 13 colonies, where the people were under rule by King George. America was essentially a mini British country that was trying to make its way. Then there was the Revolutionary War between the British and the colonists, which brought so much change throughout the entire land. Eventually, the Declaration of Independence was signed, George Washington was made President, and instead of being 13 British colonies, America was now 13 states. So much change had happened in such a short time. America signed the declaration, elected a president, and became 13 states with the benefit of freedom. What more could a country want? Well I am here to prove that at this time, change didn’t happen for the colonists like it is portrayed. “Rip Van Winkle” suggests that the people of this time didn’t appreciate the Revolutionary War. Their adaptation to new features for living life may have changed, but the Revolutionary War had little impact on how the people thought about government and the idea of freedom. Using the story of “Rip Van Winkle”, I will compare characters and ideas in the book to broader ideas of the American nature at...

Good Things Fall Apart, So Better Things Can Come Together When I regularly came home from school and hanging out with friends around 7 in the evening, my mother surprised me with some news. She grinded and said that she had something to tell me. When I saw a smile on her face, I was excited to hear it. “You are going to America.” she said. I stopped smiling and turned my face into a frown. I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to leave my house, school, families, and best friends that I have for my entire life. “But mom, everything is expensive over there. ” I tried to give her as many excuses as I could think. I added, “I’m not going to have any friends. I don’t know how to speak English. It is impossible for me to study over there. I don’t want to go. Please, let me stay here.” “You will be fine. You have your brother and your dad there. What are you afraid of? Your dad has been there for many years. All he wants is to see his kids succeed with good education. Look at your brother; he is fine over there. So you will be ok.” she said. I was sitting on a mountain of wet tissues. I would miss my friends a lot. I wouldn’t be able to hang out with them after school every day until 7 o’ clock anymore. Since I had no other choice, I had to come to America. I was scared because in my opinion...
