...Assignment: Human Digestion Summary Kasey Craycraft 2/18/13 SCI/241 Human Digestion Summary The digestive system provides two main functions, absorption and digestion. The main part of the digestive system is the gastrointestinal tract also referred to as the GI tract. This runs all the way from the mouth to the anus, about thirty feet long. The GI tract is made up of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus. The transit time is the amount of time it takes for food to pass through the length of the gastrointestinal tract. Transit time normally takes anywhere from twenty-four hours to seventy-two hours. The time it takes is affected by the composition of the diet, physical activity, emotions, medications and illness. Digestion as most know starts in the mouth. Your food is ground up by your teeth and when you are chewing your glands make saliva. Saliva is constantly produced but more is made when we are eating. The saliva softens and moistens the food in our mouth. Enzymes in the saliva help break down food so it is easier to swallow. After the mouth the food then moves through the esophagus to the stomach. By the time the food reaches the stomach it is already made into fat, protein, starch and sugar. The stomach muscles contract and relax about three times a minute. This kind of churns the food mixing it with the powerful digestive juices. This process turns food into a liquid called chime. The chime then moves through...

Digestive System

...The Human Digestion Summary SCI241 September 4, 2014 Kimberly Johnson The Human Digestion Summary Before telling you what factors affect the amount of time it takes for foods to travel through the digestive tract, and how does digestion occur in each part of the digestion system, how proteins, fats, and carbohydrates break down in the digestive system, and what types of food help with digestion; I'm going to first tell you what the digestion system is and what it is made up of. Per the NDDIC (National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse), "Digestion works by moving food through the GI tract. Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing and ends in the small intestine. As food passes through the GI tract, it mixes with digestive juices, causing large molecules of food to break down into smaller molecules. The body then absorbs these smaller molecules through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream, which delivers them to the rest of the body. Waste products of digestion pass through the large intestine and out of the body as a solid matter called stool". (NIH Publication No. 13-2681, 2013). Knowing all of that now I can tell you more about the digestion system. You may be wondering how long does it take for food to pass through your GI track; well let's just say it's up to your body on how fast it wants' to pass the intake through. Having knowledge from working in Colon and Rectal Surgery it overall take the normal person anywhere from one to three...

Methods of Evangelism

...Methods of Evangelism Joshua Fleming Liberty University Online The Roman Roads Summary of Method – The Roman Road is a methodic evangelism approach of presenting the Gospel through various bible verses throughout the book of Romans. From this approach of evangelism, each of the verses are placed in a systematic method to show us who is in need of salvation, why they are in need of salvation, the way in which God will provide salvation, ways in which we can respond to God’s salvation, and finally the results of us responding to God’s gift of salvation. In Romans 3:10-12, and 23 its states “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard”. These verses show us that every single person is in need of salvation. It states boldly that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s standards. In Romans 6:23 it states “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse shows us that as sinners and unrighteous people our consequences of our sin is death. Although it does show us that we deserve death it always gives us hope through the gift in which God has given us. In Romans 5:8 it shows us that “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” God gave us the greatest gift anyone could ever...

...started thinking that everything may not be as far out there as I originally thought. So I read the article again with more of an open mind. Even though this article may seem to be odd there are points that I myself see very similar to the way our society does things. Starting with a brief history of how the nation became the way it is, with Notgnishaw cutting down the cherry tree. Even today young children know this idea of cutting down the tree may seem familiar, and it should because George Washington cut the tree down. Miner talks about the need for our bodies to be "perfect" in order to attract friends and mates. He says that the Nacirema "perform a mouth-rite" every day because the mouth is the source of all things good and evil (kissing, talking, eating, decay) this is true everything that we do involves our mouths. He then goes on to talk about our need to stay young. I believe that our society worries too much about how old they look. Our society is always looking for new ways to look younger using face and body creams, masks, surgeries, and so forth. Another thing our society does is we see the medicine man known to us as doctors or specialists. The only difference is that when visiting the hospital, I do not stop to make a payment. Instead, I carry health insurance, which is a method of ensuring that the medicine man (doctor) can be paid....

Factors Affecting Reading Habits

...uniformity and standardization. There are some good habits, which, if your child chooses to use, will increase his retention and comprehension. They are based on a concept called active reading. This idea is simple: The more of your child's brain is engaged in the act of reading, the more he learns. The following strategies are good active reading habits that will help any reader: • Use the cover up: For many students, the words on the page run and blur together -- especially if you are hard wired like myself. To mitigate this, use a three by five index card to cover everything except the sentence that your child is reading. When they finish a line, they move the card down and repeat the process. • Give the text the finger: Along with the card, have your child follow their reading with their finger, engaging a tactical learning style. • Read out loud or mouth the words: Again, another way to engage verbal processing. Many students don't need to literally talk out load -- mouthing the words serves the same end. • Keep moving: As always, fidgeting is good for the brain. Keep them moving, to keep them on target. • Use three-color highlighting: Highlights are a cheap and easy way to integrate visual memory into the reading process. Buy your child three colors and have them assign a different color to the main points, supporting details, and terms of the reading. • Use bookmarks/flagging: Buy your child some type of "red" flag that they can use to mark important ideas...
