...INTRODUCTION According to Erskine May, "Parliamentary privilege is the sum of the peculiar rights enjoyed by each House collectively... and by members of each House individually, without which they could not discharge their functions, and which exceed those possessed by other bodies or individuals. Thus, privilege, though part of the law of the land, is to certain extent an exemption from the general law. Certain rights and immunities such as freedom from arrest or freedom of speech belong primarily to individual members of each House and exist because the House cannot perform its functions without unimpeded use of the services of its members. Other such rights and immunities such as the power to punish for contempt and the power to regulate its own constitution belong primarily to each House as a collective body, for the protection of its members and the vindication of its own authority and dignity. Fundamentally, however, it is only as a means to the effective discharge of the collective functions of the House that the individual privileges are enjoyed by members. "When any of these rights and immunities is disregarded or attacked, the offence is called a breach of privilege and is punishable under the law of Parliament. Each House also claims the right to punish as contempt actions which, while not breaches of any specific privilege, obstruct or impede it in the performance of its functions, or are offences against its authority or dignity, such as disobedience to its legitimate...

...Commercial Powers is described in several different sections that break out the functions and roles of law in business and society. This is enforced by Congress and many different acts have been passed that in addition to the constitution are the basis of the relationship between law, businesses and society. Mostly it is the basis for how business can or cannot be conducted. The foundation of Congressional powers in business fall under what is called enumerated powers. There are many enumerated powers in which are enforced in business. According to University of Phoenix The Legal Environment of Business: A Managerial Approach: Theory to Practice (2011), “The primary authorization of Constitutional powers is given to Congress under Article I. 2 Congress has enumerated powers in 18 different clauses. The powers that generally impact business owners and managers include (1) the power to regulate commerce ( Commerce Clause ); (2) taxing the citizenry and commercial entities and spending government funds (tax and spend provisions); (3) bankruptcy, patents, and copyrights; and (4) a more general implied authority to make all laws necessary for carrying out its enumerated powers (Necessary and Proper Clause ).” First this explains that Congress has an influence in businesses on how they produce, ship, sell etc. This is a power that comes from the Commerce Clause where Congress can regulate among several states. Congress is able to pass laws when interstate commerce is affected....

...Appraising Internationality in Spanish Communication Journals ´ david ferna ndez-quijada This article explores how journals published in a language other than English achieve a degree of internationality and can increase our knowledge of scientific publication patterns. This author offers a case study focused on Spanish communication journals from a sample of 1182 articles published from 2007 to 2009. The article examines three variables in this sample: the number of non-Spanish scholars, the use of languages other than Spanish, and how often non-Spanish journals are referred to. The results show that (a) these journals find it difficult to attract foreign scholars, (b) open-language policies have had a limited effect, and (c) internationality is constrained to the Spanish geolinguistic region. Keywords: internationality, local journals, Spanish scholarly journals, journal evaluation, communication sciences introduction The impact of published research is measured by means of well-established tools; one such tool is the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). However, in the field of communication studies — and in fact in all the social sciences — the SSCI does not take account of all the research published; this is particularly visible in cases where research is published in languages other than English. For example, in 2009, only 81 out of the 1585 articles (5.11 per cent) indexed in the Communication category of the SSCI were not written in English. In the context of these...

...Gathering academic information Task One: Library Catalogue The library catalogue lists all the material, both in print and online, available in the Universities libraries. The easiest way to access a specific electronic journal or electronic book is via the library catalogue. 1. Open up a web browser and login to the Digital University page. You should see a library section; click on the library home page link. 2. Click on the library catalogue: ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- What is an academic journal? ------------------------------------------------- Think of journals as academic magazines. Journals can be published monthly, quarterly or annually and they contain the latest ideas and research in a subject discipline. Journals usually publish a number of issues during a year, which are then collected into a numbered volume. You will be expected to read journal articles in addition to books. Some journals have a broad scope and others have a more specific focus. Note also, that journals do not always have the word ‘Journal’ in their title; however you can usually identify a reference to a journal article as it will contain a year, possibly a volume number and a page number in addition to the article title and journal title. An example of an article reference from the journal Academy of Management Journal: ------------------------------------------------- Raffiee, J. (2014) “Should I quit...

...an academic journal. It contains original research results or reviews existing results. Such a paper, also called an article, will only be considered valid if it undergoes a process of peer review by one or more referees (who are academics in the same field) who check that the content of the paper is suitable for publication in the journal. A paper may undergo a series of reviews, revisions and re-submissions before finally being accepted or rejected for publication. This process typically takes several months. Next there is often a delay of many months (or in some subjects, over a year) before an accepted manuscript appears. This is particularly true for the most popular journals where the number of accepted articles often outnumbers the space for printing. Due to this, many academics self-archive a 'pre-print' copy of their paper for free download from their personal or institutional website. Some journals, particularly newer ones, are now published in electronic form only. Paper journals are now generally made available in electronic form as well, both to individual subscribers, and to libraries. Almost always these electronic versions are available to subscribers immediately upon publication of the paper version, or even before; sometimes they are also made available to non-subscribers, either immediately (by open access journals) or after an embargo of anywhere from two to twenty-four months or more, in order to protect against loss of subscriptions. Journals having this...

...Literature Search This paper is about performing searches for peer-reviewed scholarly research articles using online data bases. Two articles are identified; one as a qualitative study and the other as a quantitative study. The first, "Nursing care of prisoners: staff views and experiences" (Powel, Harris, Condon, and Kemple, 2010) is a qualitative research study. This was recognized as a qualitative research study because it was based on feelings and views; not objective findings. Burns and Grove (2011) defines a qualitative research study as "a systematic, subjective approach used to describe life experiences and situations and give them meaning" (p. 20). The second article, "Assessing Behavior and Social Competence of Severely Emotionally Disturbed Youth Admitted to Psychiatric Residential Treatment" (Groot, 2009) is a quantitative study. According to Burns & Grove, (2011) "Quantitative research is a formal, objective, systematic process in which numerical data are used to obtain information about the world” (p. 20) and it is evident this article was quantitative because the findings employed numerical data. Three data bases were utilized; EBSCO Host, Proquest, and Gale Power Search. All three data bases were accessed through the University of Phoenix library website. When utilizing the EBSCO Host key words of "correctional nursing" were used. To narrow the search the following criteria were selected: Boolean, full text, scholarly (peer reviewed), and only dates...

...ARTICLE IN PRESS Journal of Econometrics ] (]]]]) ]]]–]]] www.elsevier.com/locate/jeconom Modeling the diffusion of scientific publications Dennis Fok, Philip Hans Fransesà Econometric Institute, Erasmus University Rotterdam, P.O. Box 1738, NL-3000 DR Rotterdam, The Netherlands Abstract This paper illustrates that salient features of a panel of time series of annual citations can be captured by a Bass type diffusion model. We put forward an extended version of this diffusion model, where we consider the relation between key characteristics of the diffusion process and features of the articles. More specifically, parameters measuring citations’ ceiling and the timing of peak citations are correlated with specific features of the articles like the number of pages and the number of authors. Our approach amounts to a multi-level non-linear regression for a panel of time series. We illustrate our model for citations to articles that were published in Econometrica and the Journal of Econometrics. Amongst other things, we find that more references lead to more citations and that for the Journal of Econometrics peak citations of more recent articles tend to occur later. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. ...The required reading, Writing the Empirical Journal Article, covers how to write an empirical article after conducting scientific research. An empirical article is defined by Georgia State University as, an article that reports on research conducted by the author or authors, based on observations or experiments (GSU, 2016). One of the first topics discussed was which article should you write; the article you planned to write when you designed your experiment or the article that makes the most sense now you have all the findings. The answer to that question, according to the required reading, is the second option. One of the most important criteria for a sound scientific article is accuracy and clarity in your writing. Accuracy is important in ensuring that the results and findings are clear and that you do not publish incorrect data. Clarity is for the reader’s sake, allowing them to become educated on the subject on the article and to understand the results. According to Daryl Bem, author of Writing the Empirical Journal Article, clarity in a scientific article is achieved in two ways; first good organization and standardized format, and second writing simply and directly (Bem, nd). One of the requirements for the standardized format is, according to the American Psychological Association, writing in APA format (American Psychological Association, 1984). The topic of writing simply and directly takes us to the next point of the article, for whom you should write. No matter the...

...Search Organization When looking for an article to support our barriers to resolution I was able to use two different databases. At first I tried using the CINAHL database to try and find an article. It soon became evident that the combination of the database and the choice of words I was using were not working out, as I was not receiving many search results. I then tried using the multisearch (discovery) database and I was presented with many more results than when using the CINAHL database. Upon searching through the multiserach database I was soon able to locate my article that I decided to use in the paper. I initially tried searching things like “nurses not continuing education” and “nurses resistant to continuing education”. Upon searching through the search results I was still not able to find an article that worked for our paper. I chose these words as they highlighted the topic I was trying to discuss. I then tried searching “resistance to change in nursing education” and I was presented with many more articles that seemed relevant to my topic. Upon searching through the results I was able to find an article that worked for my topic. Article Relevance The reference I chose to use for this search strategy was: Clark, C. S. (2013). ...1.1 Introduction to Referencing Referencing is the process of recording details of the secondary sources (books, journal articles, electronic sources etc) you refer to in a piece of work. You need to acknowledge these sources for two reasons – • firstly to protect yourself against any accusations of plagiarism. The University of Hertfordshire’s UPR 17-1 defines plagiarism as “ the representation of another person's work as the candidate's own, either by extensive unacknowledged quotation or paraphrasing or by direct copying of another person's work” • secondly to allow you and whoever is assessing your work to be able to easily trace the original source if need be. You need to refer to your sources in two places- • in the body of your work • in the list of references at the end. What follows shows you how to do this for various types of material: books, journals and electronic resources, preceded by a section on how to deal with quotes. The Harvard system of referencing is used for printed sources. At present, this does not cover electronic sources, but we will be using a commonly used set of guidelines for the latter. Please read through the handout, and try the practical exercises in Parts 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 1.2 Using Quotations The following guidance on using quotations applies to all forms of material – books, journals and electronic items. It is appropriate to use quotations to support or illustrate points you wish to make in your assessed work...

...The Interplay of Diversity Training and Diversity Beliefs on Team Creativity in Nationality Diverse Teams by Astrid C. Homan, Claudia Buengeler, Robert A. Eckhoff, Wendy P. van Ginkel and Sven C. Voelpel. The journal puts forth the following research question; Does diversity training increase team creativity reflecting in better team cohesion and effectiveness but only for teams with less positive beliefs of diversity. The method in which the research is conducted is through a qualitative study whereas diversity beliefs questionnaires (online) were completed by 192 participants of 41 different nationalities. All of the participants were undergraduate students who were enrolled in an international university located in Germany. One of the gaps in the study was that the study failed to understand the long term effects of diversity training along with addressing the effects of it on individuals who have not been previously exposed to diverse conditions or diverse individuals. Additionally, the diversity training was only conducted for persons within an academic setting and may suggest that people outside of academia would respond much differently to diversity training. The findings of the research suggest and support the idea that a lack of diversity in organizations may be a liability and that providing diversity training to teams and organizations with a little or no diversity can achieve positive results but at the same time, may result in a reduction of creative performance...
