Knowing where you come from.
Marcus Garvey once said a people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. If education is that tree, constantly growing and sprouting leaves, then we must know our roots so we can keep this tree strong. Education has come so far over the course of time, and though constantly evolving, has seen many adversities. Overcoming segregation, culture diversity, and the struggle to implement programs that create equality, shows the desire to build a better future. However, have we truly learned from our problems of the past or are we headed to a state of regression?
It’s no secret that our nation is built on a dark history of slavery and segregation. However, the second the first slave owner taught his slaves English to better communication and increase productivity, he also inspired the desire to learn and sparked a flame of change. Though this change was on the rise the need for segregation was still enforced. In 1892 Homer Plessy a Creole man who could easily pass for white, sat in a white’s only car of the east Louisiana Railroad and proclaimed his was African American. Plessy was arrested for his actions, and in 1896 his case was made that the law which stated separation as long as equal was unjust and went against the 13th and 14th amendment. Unknown at the time his arrest would pave the way for a major educational change (Womer, 2002). Plessy’s case addressed a very serious issue as it showed that Whites reserved the best for themselves and left the scraps for African American’s, so how in fact was anything equal? This question would way heavy on the minds of many and would open major flood gates. In 1931 Robert Alvarez would fight for educational equality in the Lemon Grove school district and would successful desegregate the school district gaining equality for Mexican American’s (Alvarez jr, 1986). However, it would be 1954-1955 that need for desegregating education entirely would gain notice nationally. Five cases of racial segregation would gain the notice of the NAACP and would put pressure on the supreme court to change the laws. The cases which would all come to be known as brown vs. the board of education was enough to show that separate was not equal, and change laws to give true equality (NPS, 2013). Though education had come a long way overcoming racial segregation and inequality there were still educational barriers that held people back. In 1974 the issue would be addressed in San Francisco, California that ending segregation was not enough. Though students of all race and creed were now allowed to attend their school of choice, new issues arose with non-English speakers not having the same educational opportunities as everyone else. The case Known as Lau vs. Nichols which would start as a local fight to bridge the language barrier for all Chinese students, would eventually gain national attention and show the need for special language programs for all non-english speaking students (Find Law, 2013). It seemed as if education had finally started to take a step in the right direction, however there was still so much to work out. In 1975 Congress would pass the Education for all Handicapped Children Act, or better Known as Public Law 94-142. This act would ensure that schools could no longer exclude children with disabilities. This Act evolved into The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or more commonly known as I.D.E.A. The act would ensure children with special needs would receive a free appropriate public education, no different from other children. Under I.D.E.A students would be given either an Individual education program (IEP) or a 504, and these plans are set to even the playing field for all students with special needs. This would take education to the point of almost full inclusion (Pardini, 2013). We started as a nation of free thinkers who wanted to overcome adversity, and though our start was rough to say the least, we have positioned ourselves to do just that. I think that education is a constant evolving process, and with its growth and development there will be many changes. However, if we remember where we came from and all it took to get us here we will continue to progress and flourish. I think we still have a long way to go, but I don’t think we will allow for any steps back in our educational growth, because history has proven we are great advocates for our future.

Modernism: A Christian Worldview

...life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (14:6 NIV). He is telling Thomas that because he knows him (Jesus) that he knows the way to his Father. In Christianity, Jesus is the source of all truth. I believe that everyone has their own version of the truth. Just as Christian’s have their belief, modernists have their own version as do postmodernists have their own. I however don’t have a strong biblical background or knowledge, so my truth varies from all three. If you ask a modernist what they think truth means they would tell you that everything needs be rationally explained. If you were to ask a postmodernist what they believe truth is they would tell you...

Outer Space Exploration

...We live in a world where there are environmental issues that range from global warming to air pollution. Environmental scientists dedicated themselves by putting years and years into finding a long-term solution for these issues. The effects of these issues can potentially be damaging in the next couple of decades so people live I fear of what is to come. This same fear prevents people from thinking outside of the box. We came so far in the mist of our issues that it almost seems unfixable. With new technology today we have various ways for exploring outside our world to find new ways to make life on earth a little easier. Since issues on earth are still in effect, people’s fear of what is to come in the future prevent them from becoming aware of how exploring outside this world in space can actually benefit us all, and how important it is to our planet earth. Although there are many environmental issues on earth, outer exploration should continue to be funded. Outer space exploration may be needed in the future to prevent or solve new issues on earth to come. Oblivious To the Benefits There are many benefits to outer space exploration that people are aware not of. Before I decided to do research I was unaware of the number of things that we actually use today that would have never been possible if we did not explore outer space in the past, that we are going to get into later on is this paper. Imagine you went to the grocery...

Advertisment

...Advertisement Do you ever look at you grandparents or parents and wonder what they are talking about? Are they talking about you? You won’t know unless you learn to speak your own language. It is good to know how to speak, read and write your own language. You want to know what your grandparents are saying. You want to learn from the stories that they can tell you, the wisdom they can give you, so you can pass these stories on from generation to generation. Are we losing our language? It’s not too late to relearn it. There are still people that can teach you and you can even learn it electronically. Knowing your language gives you that sense of identity of where you came from. You don’t want to come from a lost tribe, you want to know where you came from. The problem is that many Navajo teenagers don’t want to learn their language; they just want to do what everyone else is doing. They might even be made fun of because they know how to speak Navajo. My advertisement is intended to convince my target audience to learn their language. The wording in my advertisement is in a lighter color because our minds will focus more on lighter colors than on darker colors. The advertisement will go into a magazine or a poster so that there will be a way for teenagers to see it. The main focus will be on the words “Don’t Lose Who You Are”. The words will be bolded and in a bigger font so they will be very visible. Plus, the words will be in a lighter color so that’s where the reader’s eyes...

The Importance of Planning

...installation of any server HP, IBM, Oracle etc. A lot of things come in to play when installing a server from any vendor for that matter. Planning is knowledge and knowing is everything when it comes to servers. Knowing what the client wants to accomplish, knowing how many people are going to access the server, knowing the purpose of the server, knowing what OS is appropriate, along with the roles you need to install from Active Directory, DNS, etc. and if a HyperV with multiple severs installed on it would be the best route. Without planning you would be asking for problems and multiple adjustments after the installation is complete. When it comes to installing the physical server itself planning is vital a lot of things come into play is it going to be a standalone or rack mount if rack mount what other devices are going to use the rack as well from routers, switches and firewalls. Cable management and cooling procedures also need to be planned the goal is to add and remove users to and from the switch without spending valuable time looking for the correct cables and keeping the server as cold as possible. After we’ve planned out the purpose for the server we then have to meet hardware requirements and by planning ahead we can avoid having to make upgrades after the installation. When it comes to HP servers there are a lot of ways to plan for its installation. You need to meet certain requirements for an optimum environment. You need to meet space and airflow requirements, temperature...

Loaf of Bread

...the moral dilemma the man must have been facing knowing that stealing is wrong, but also knowing that his family would starve if they were not given food.  I am reminded of my all-time favorite book “Les Miserables”, where Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread for the sake of his starving family. He knows that stealing is wrong, however, his family will surely die if he does not get them food. He is a hard worker, but still is very poor and the only way to get food is to steal it. He faced an inner conflict regarding the decision to break the baker’s window and steal a loaf of bread but accepted the consequences of doing so because he knew that his sister and her children would die without food and as a result, served many years in prison due to his crime. In today’s society, stealing a loaf of bread will not send you to prison for multiple years, however, it does come with a stigmatism of being known as a thief. This is an inner conflict that the person stealing must accept. The family will deal with the shame of knowing their loved one had to steal for food, which brings a stigmatism to the family by the community and society as a whole.  Thieves are generally looked at as lower class people, poor, dirty, dishonest, and someone who you do not want to associate with. This can by a terrible judgment by the community and society altogether.  The family member who stole the loaf of bread may have been a well-educated person, upstanding in the community, but was dealing with the shame...

What Is Knowledge

...look like? What I’m going to call the standard analytic approach (SA) says that: A) The way to answer WK is to analyse the concept of knowledge. B) To analyse the concept of knowledge is to come up with non-circular necessary and sufficient conditions for someone to know that something is the case. Is the standard analytic approach to WK the right approach? If not, what would be a better way of doing things? These are the questions I’m going to tackle here. I want to look at some criticisms of SA and consider the prospects for a different, non-standard analytic approach (NA) to WK. Here is one objection to SA: the concept of knowledge can’t be analysed, at least if analysis is understood in the way that (B) understands it.[i] (B) assumes a reductive conception of analysis, according to which analysing a concept is a matter of breaking it down into more basic concepts. Let’s say that a concept C1 is more basic than another concept C2 just if one can grasp C1 without grasping C2 but one can’t grasp C2 without grasping C1. Proponents of SA tend to assume that concepts like truth, belief, and justification are in this sense more basic than the concept knows and that that is why they can be used to specify non-circular necessary and sufficient conditions for knowing. If it turns out that such conditions can’t be given, and therefore that the concept of knowledge can’t be analysed, the net result of combining (A) and (B) will be to make WK unanswerable. If this question...

Academic Success

...make sure you know yourself because knowing what your goals are and how to accomplish them and to know what resources are available will help you succeed. Going back to school can be terrifying, especially after being out school for so long. You, like myself, are probably telling yourself that you can’t do it. You haven’t been in school in so long; things have changed so much. We all hate the thought of failure; the truth is you won’t know until you try. There are things you can do to help yourself prepare for returning to school, and I’m going to go over some that I have learned along the way. The most important thing you need to know when returning to school is yourself. You can’t be successful if you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses. By taking a look at yourself, you can get a grasp on what areas of learning you might struggle with and what part of learning should come easy. There are many factors that can influence how we learn. These factors can include your behavioral characteristics, how much life experience you have, which of your senses are most predominant and whether or not you are self-directed in your learning (Reuter, 2000). For instance, I know that I need to be shown a few times, then I need just to dive in and try it myself. If I don’t get that hands on experience, all the telling me in the world doesn’t make a difference. Knowing this, I have become better even in my career. Understanding how you learn helps you teach others. If you can spot...

How Much of Know's Knowledge Depends on Interaction with Other Knowers?

...How much of one’s knowledge depends on interaction with other knowers? Most of a person’s knowledge comes from and depends upon the interaction with others. We simply cannot have knowledge if you are isolated from others. Take the example that you are alone, in a room, with no windows. In this situation the person in the room cannot possibly have any understanding of the outside world. They would also not know the most basic of information. Would one know that one was human or that there are other people beside oneself out there? How would one also think of things if there were no former knowledge of language? The person in the above example can be thought of as one of the humans that are living in the underground cave in the article that I have previously read titled, “The Allegory of the Cave.” Both the person in the room and the human in the cave have no prior knowledge of the outside world. Though the human has seen shadow, heard voices, and has had some interaction with others, he still does not know whether the things that he has seen or heard are in fact true. The person in the room does not have the luxury to leave the room like the human in the cave did to explore the world. Because the human was able to leave the cave, he gained new knowledge and learned that his previous knowledge was not correct. A way that we can gain knowledge from the interaction of others is through our parents or peers. As we are growing up, our parents help us gain knowledge of the world...

How Lucky You Are

...Essay - How Lucky You Are The short story, “How Lucky You Are”, is written by Debi Alper and published in 2010. The main theme in the story is to appreciate what you have and, as the title says, to know how lucky you are. The main character is Max. Max is a student in a special school for creative people, The Britt School, but he does not appreciate the opportunities he has in this school. He is a very creative boy with a “twisted imagination”. He used to be a happy boy until one day when his father left him and his mother. Now he is sixteen, he has no enthusiasm for school, and he smokes home-made cigarettes. He always fights with his mother and he is unaware of people around him. But all of this changes one day when he decides to skip school and go smoke in front of the UK Borders Agency. This is where he meets the Iranian girl, Ishraqi, who is a refugee. Ishraqi comes from Iran but fled to Britain when both her parents were arrested in an anti-government demonstration. She does not know if they are dead or alive, and her future depends on whether she gets asylum in Britain. Even though a lot of people try to flee from conflicts and corruption in their native country, Great Britain deports several refugees and asylum seekers every year. This is unfortunately also what happens to Ishraqi. The story takes place in Croydon, Britain, where Max lives and goes to school. The UK Borders Agency lies in Croydon, and this is where most of the story takes place. The nature is not...

Political Compass Test

...The political compass test is somewhat useful, but it is more of a tool to confirm and put a title to what an individual stand for when it comes to a government. Most individuals just feel a certain way and associate with a political party, but after this test, I feel as if I know exactly where I stand when it comes to political ideologies. Ideology is absolutely inevitable, so knowing where you stand is very important because you can then get involved in your government and help solve issues that you want to be fixed or voice your concern about something that you feel needs to be done. Also, knowing other ideologies can help one think outside the box, even if one does not agree with them, it will help them see a government from another perspective...

Budgets and Being Frugal

...To be frugal is to know how to live on a budget (verb) and to live on a budget we need to know what a budget (noun) is. The word budget is often said to come from the Latin word bulga meaning little pouch or knapsack. But there is so much more to the word. The definition of a budget is an estimate of income and expenditures for a set period of time. According to David Ramsey, an expert of finance, a budget basically is a plan for your money or telling your money what to do. Now the first budget was presented in India on April 7, 1860 by the East India Trading Company to the British Crown by James Wilson. This brought clarity to British Crown on the finances that were going on. Now these are some reasons to have a budget. The first reason is to understand the nature of money and where it is going. Money is a very complex subject to understand. To some money means the sum of cash you have in your pocket or the amount of money in your bank account. Money could also represent credit, the ability to buy a house on mortgage, or the ability to obtain merchandise with a credit card and knowing that one can understand that money can be like a wild animal without direction or instruction. A budget can be compared, figuratively, to a leash on that animal to control it. Without a budget money has the capacity to overrun and control your life. The second reason to have a budget is to specifically find out what a need is and what a want is. Needs are defined as goods or services that are...
