...So, here’s the thing. I have been sitting at the kitchen table trying to write the final exam essay for days. Literally. It is a few days before and I am still scratching my head and I just now realized why. You see, I have not written a “paper” in thirty years! That’s not an excuse, it is just a really, really, long time. Sure, I have written presentations, ad campaigns and marketing materials for clients, etc. but I have not written and actual term paper since circa 1986. I could easily put together a complex science fair project proving that more expensive golf balls really do go further, or read the lines of Judas for the upcoming eighth grade play, quote “To Kill a Mockingbird”, I could knock any spelling test out of the ballpark but choose one of your essay questions and use no other sources other than my brain and the Bible, that’s a tall order. But here goes, my first shot at re-entering the world of academia. I suppose with age does come wisdom, or at least the yearning for more. I have discovered that the second time around I am really here to learn, to think, to have conversations about the material studied. It is not just to reach an end goal of credit hours and graduation. Having said that, I wanted to know more about Joel even though you didn’t ask for it or particularly want it. Some of the additional facts I have learned will creep into this paper and I apologize but it just feels as if my understanding of the passage may not be complete without them...

...The essay assignment was to gather data about some aspect of food habits, and to compare the findings to some aspect of the book Good to Eat by anthropologist Marvin Harris. Write comments that will help the student reformulate this essay for another revision. In your comments, focus on 1) the argument structure, 2) the claims and their support, especially the integration of quotations, and 3) the overall organization of the paper. Does travel influence what's good to eat and bad to eat? Every culture has food taboos. Some, of course, have more than others. Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand, for example, tend to have a more diverse cultural diet than do European countries. I conducted a survey to see how a country's food taboos correlate with the personal eating habits of those who have traveled there. I found that people who have traveled to Asian countries tend to have less food taboos than do those who have traveled to Europe. In fact, people who have traveled to Asia often could not cite one food that they refuse to eat. Everyone who has been to Europe on the other hand, could name at least one food that they personally consider to be inedible. I believe that the reason for this disparity can be found in the economic differences between the East and the West, and also, in the personal reasons people have for traveling to either Europe or Asia. Southeast Asians lack specific food types they refuse to eat. Besides the more conventional meats, i.e., beef, pork...

...ICOSAMP – The Information Core for Southern African Migrant Pests Margaret Powell1 1ICOSAMP Co-ordinator, Agricultural Research Council – Plant Protection Research Institute, P/Bag X134, Pretoria 0001, South Africa (Contact: icosamp@ecoport.org). Abstract Migrant pests such as locusts, armyworm, and Quelea birds, annually plague the southern African region, and in some years have been known to cause devastating damage to food crops within member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). As these pests are highly mobile and often cross political boundaries, communication and collaboration between neighbouring countries is vital with respect to forecasting, monitoring, and controlling these outbreaks. ICOSAMP, endorsed by SADC and funded by the UK Department for International Development, has established a regional network of information officers who submit monthly reports on the status of migrant pests in their country to the ICOSAMP co-ordinator. This close interaction between national Ministries of Agriculture, Plant Protection Institutes, and NGO’s, not only highlights potential areas at risk from migrant pests, but also provides a platform for technical co-operation and sharing of research information. The provision of early warning of impending cross-border invasions prevents the uncontrolled spread of migratory pests, thus reducing the impact of these pests on the food security of the region. ICOSAMP utilises modern technology...

...Locus of Control After reading the chapter on locus control, I would have to say that I feel that an internal locus control would be the most beneficial to most real life situations we all face today. I personally feel that everything that we experience in life, whether good or bad is directly linked by our own actions. There are a lot of people out there that succumb to external locust but it has been my experience that most of them people suffer from some type of “defeated” outlook on almost everything that happens to them or what they go through. After completing the assessment, I found that I can associate more with having an internal locus. I have always felt that whatever happens in my life time is due to my own decisions. Sometimes I do find myself saying I have the worst luck or that it is something else’s fault that things didn’t go my way but for the most part, I feel I have total control of my life. Some positive outcomes of internal locus is motivation, happiness, drive and self-reliance. An example of external locus control would probably be going to the casino. You already know that the odds are stacked against you but you know deep down inside there is still a chance to win big and most of all, you are being entertained! Some negative outcomes of internal locus would probably the fact that your motivation and confidence can be hurt such as failing a test because you feel you didn’t study hard enough. The negative outcomes of external locus are tremendous...

...The regions that the Locust River is located in is the Piedmont Region. This regions is on the Fail Line meaning it has rapids that were attractive to settlers. People now a days can go white water rafting in this area. These are some of the hardest rapids to raft on in the state of Alabama. The Locust River is runs through part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. This contrast with the low and flat topography of the Coastal South where the Suwanee River is located. There are many swaps, lakes, and coastal marshes around the Suwanee River area because of the poor drainage. The Suwannee has rapids as well that are located several miles upstream from the city of White Spring. The two rivers are also located on different plains. The Suwanee River...

...Food Additives Taking this class has been very eyes opening, I have never give much thought to the kind of additives that is included in our foods. The Center for Science in the Public Interest list of food additives was a great source. It is very sad to see that our government allows companies to produce products or ingredients that is use in our foods that can cause or other serious health problems for most of us. Some of the ingredients can cause Cancer, or increase blood pressure or other ailments. The bottom line is consumers should be aware of what they are putting in their bodies. We should not let the FDA tell us what is safe for us to consume. They leave the final decision to food manufactures as to what is safe for us. More reason why we should follow Michael Pollan book “food Rules” and eat natural food, more plant base food. This class has given me an education in nutritional information I will use to further my fitness goal and to continue to make sure my daughter has a solid foundation in nutrition. I will continue to read labels now that I know the meaning of the additives on the label. I was required to take a science class and because of my interest in health and fitness I selected this class and I am very glad I did. I am walking away with information that I will use for the rest of my life. ...In Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, the author uses the locusts as a symbol to foreshadow the arrival of the missionaries. Firstly, Achebe describes the locusts as slowly descending: “At first, a fairly small swarm… then appeared on the horizon a slowly moving mass...soon it covered half the sky” (Achebe 55). In this scene, the reader is able to identify foreshadowing; Achebe is alluding to the missionaries who slowly migrate into Africa later on in the novel. In chapter 15, the author emphasizes the comparison of the locusts and the missionaries. The narrator explains, “They were the locusts… and that first man was their harbinger sent to explore the terrain” (55). Through this, readers are able to confirm that the locusts truly do represent the missionaries. Not only that, the author also foreshadows the...

...Xavier Lopez 9-2-13 Making Business Decisions I Buyer Power:Low - In the city of Locust Grove, Georgia, the Broadway Cafe would not have to put up with much buyer power. There aren’t many restaurants there and the closest coffee shops (Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks) are both about 10 minutes away. Supplier Power: Low - Since coffee is a cash crop that can be found in several countries, there should be plenty of suppliers to chose from. Threat of Substitute: High - Since the Broadway Cafe doesn’t serve anything that you can’t get elsewhere within close proximity of Locust Grove, customers might feel compelled to go to a restaurant they are more familiar with. If the cafe offered a special dish with its own unique recipe or opened a new range of products; then the store would be able to force the threat of substitutes down. Threat of New Entrants: Low - Even though Locust Grove is a small city, there aren’t many mom and pop shops or family owned restaurants, and I don’t see anymore coming any time soon. Rivalry Among Existing Competitors: High -Even though there isn’t a coffee shop in Locust Grove now, that doesn’t mean one won’t be built in the future. Locust Grove is a steady growing city and plenty of new shoppes have been opening lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if a Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks were opened within the next year. ...to both the imminent collapse of the African tribal system, threatened by the rise of imperialist bureaucracies, and the imminent disintegration of the British Empire. Achebe, writing in 1959, had the benefit of retrospection in depicting Nigerian society and British colonialism in the 1890s. Yet Achebe’s allusion is not simply political, nor is it ironic on only one level. Yeats’s poem is about the Second Coming, a return and revelation of sorts. In Things Fall Apart, this revelation refers to the advent of the Christian missionaries (and the alleged revelation of their teachings), further satirizing their supposed benevolence in converting the Igbo. For an agricultural society accustomed to a series of cycles, including that of the locusts, the notion of return would be quite credible and familiar. The hyperbolic and even contradictory nature of the passage’s language suggests the inability of humankind to thwart this collapse. “Mere anarchy” is an oxymoron in a sense, since the definition of anarchy implies an undeniably potent level of radicalism. The abstraction in the language makes the poem’s ideas universal: by referring to “[t]hings” falling apart as opposed to specifying what those collapsing or disintegrating things are, Yeats (and Achebe) leaves his words open to a greater range of...

...Cameron Wheatley March 25, 2013 Non-Linear Interactive Story Telling Paper 3 The first video game I really played on a console was Gears of War 3, about two years ago; only because my mom never bought me a Xbox or Play Station. My boyfriend and his friends always played it, while I would watch. The Locust characters frightened me because of their different noises and scary appearance. On the other hand, I was intrigued by the graphics due to the great deal of line work. I also enjoyed the copious amounts of gore involved in the game. I finally picked up a controller and began playing for myself. Since the day I began playing, I delved into all three Gears of War games. I tried to play the campaign or storyline for these games, but they were mostly incredibly boring due to the constant cut scenes. The entire Gears of War series is about the COG or human soldiers trying to save the last human inhabitants on a fictional planet called Sera from the subterranean enemy species known as the Locust Horde or Locust for short. Basically, you are fighting for a place to live. Last week, on March 19th, Gears of War: Judgement was released. I was a bit hesitant about purchasing this game because it was co-developed by Bulletstorm Studio People Can Fly and Epic Games, which changed the graphics to include much less line work. I bought it anyways and beat it in about eight hours over the course of three days. The game play was completely different than any of the other games, when...

...NATURE|Vol 461|1 October 2009 Vol 461|1 October 2009 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS JOURNAL CLUB Bruce R. Conklin Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, San Francisco, California A geneticist wonders why we need to sleep. Scientists can have a love–hate relationship with sleep. We know that it is vital for our health, but not the reasons why. We celebrate dreams that provide inspiration, but often dismiss sleep as a chore. Yet deep sleep can provide insight into vexing problems. In 1920, pharmacologist Otto Loewi famously had a recurring dream that suggested how he could demonstrate neurotransmission in the lab. The key experimental details escaped him until he captured the dream in a bedside notebook. Later that day, he performed his Nobel-prizewinning experiments with the aid of a few frog hearts and a water bath. Now, a team led by Ying-Hui Fu reports that a single mutation in a gene called DEC2 can cause people to sleep for only about six hours per night instead of the usual eight (Y. He et al. Science 325, 866–870; 2009). This mutation seems to be exceedingly rare, with only two carriers found so far. Only by introducing this mutation into transgenic mice and fruitflies could the researchers show compelling evidence of the mutation’s effect. These two additional waking hours each day are quite remarkable when you consider that, over 80 years, this would add up to more than 8 years of extra productivity! Why are extreme short sleepers so rare? Surely evolutionary pressures...
