Case 09-9: Bricks & Mortar This case deals with a company called Bricks & Mortar Co. that is preparing their financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2009. The balance sheet currently reads that there is a balance of $2,000 in the current tax liability account and $800 in the deferred tax liability account. Their income statement reads $2,000 in current tax expense and $200 in the deferred tax expense account. The management has identified two deductions for which tax law is not clear as to whether these tax positions should reduce the company’s tax liability for the year 2009. Management is confident that all other tax positions will be sustained by the taxing authority and that all of the deductions should be reflected in the financial statements. Management is facing two issues in determining whether this tax position would hold up in court. Some adjustments must be made to make sure their financial statements comply with ASC 740-10.
Issue 1: Issue one is that Bricks & Mortar has implemented a certain tax strategy that resulted in a $40 reduction in taxes payable. Management believes that they overstated income by $100 due to accuracy-related errors. There are two defenses the company can take to avoid a possible penalty. They will have to prove that they have substantial authority and/or reasonable cause and good faith to avoid being penalized. If enough evidence is provided to support their defense against the penalty they will being accruing interest in the period they claim their position. If they do not have sufficient evidence to support the substantial authority and/or reasonable cause and good faith defense they will instead be accrue penalties in the first period they claim their position and not accrue interest.

Mortars and Pestles

...Kay C. Fowler June 1, 2012 Mortars and Pestles Are Everywhere Mortars and pestles can be used for so many things. In what I have read they are essential tools in the world of pharmacy. Mixing and breaking down medications to get the right compound then and now, I know from experience the necessity of this tool. My grandmother for as long as I could remember, in my culture is what we call a Suruhana. Suruhana in our culture is a native witch doctor who practices through herbs, prayer, and the belief in our ancestor's spirits. Growing up and spending alot of time with her gave me a view on medicine in a whole new way. I feared going to the hospital and preferred the bitter herbal medicine she would grind and stir up. Chamorro is my ethnicity and like every culture most of today is based on our past and our ancestors. We believe that Taotaomonas (our ancestors) live forever with us and in the jungles of Guam. Being a Suruhana is believed to be a great gift and is usually passed down to a child who is the most healthy to ensure that the gift is practiced for a long time. Mixing medicine is not the only task of a Suruhana, there are many more things the can do depending on how much the Suruhana passes down. It also takes many years to learn the gift. Watching my grandmother prepare the medicine was always intriguing. She never did tell me what the bowl and stick was that she used to mix her medicine. The only difference from the common mortar and pestle was she wrapped a...

Reverse Engineering

...While concrete has been around in one form or another since before Roman times, in this era the cement was usually mixed by hand using a shovel or spade. However in the late 1920 when the automobile industry started to become popular so did the portable cement mixer or concrete mixer as it is more commonly know in the construction industry. A cement mixer is device often used in the construction industry to produce a concrete substance, this is done by adding compound components such as the concrete powder, mortar and water together with the aid of a cement mixer to mix and fold these components to form what is known as a concrete substance which may be used for the application of bricklaying, foot paths or drive ways. A cement mixer is often used in the construction industry in large quantities however these devices can also be used by DIY householders due to the variety of mixers currently available in today’s market. All mixers leverage power, torque and weight distribution to get the concrete to the site, but getting it out of the truck is where you'll see differences in truck designs. Most of the mixer fleet, especially older batch model trucks use a simple tip-and-pour method to get the concrete out of the mixer. A chute attaches to a port and the concrete pours out of the mixer to the project. Usually, the driver of the truck operates the machinery and aims the chute. Many transit mixers are coupled to a hydraulic lift bed that can tip up the drum, similar to a dump truck...

...Asphalt concrete is a composite material commonly used in construction projects such as road surfaces, parking lots, and airports. Asphalt concrete consists of asphalt (used as a binder) mixed with mineral aggregate and then laid down in layers and compacted. Asphalt concrete was refined and enhanced to its current state by Belgian inventor and U.S. immigrant Edward de Smedt.[2] It is increasingly being used as the core of embankment dams.[3] It is commonly called simply asphalt,[4] blacktop, or paving (particularly in North America). The terms "asphalt (or asphaltic) concrete", "bituminous asphalt concrete", and "bituminous mixture" are typically used only in engineering and construction documents and literature. The abbreviation "AC" is sometimes used for "asphalt concrete" but can also denote "asphalt content" or "asphalt cement", referring to the liquid asphalt portion of a bituminous mixture. Asphalt concrete pavements are often called just "asphalt" by laypersons who tend to associate the term "concrete" with Portland cement concrete only. The engineering definition of concrete is any composite material composed of mineral aggregate glued together with a binder, whether that binder is Portland cement, asphalt or even epoxy. Artillery in Vietnam

...During the Vietnam War the US Field Artillery had to change their tactics and weaponry to fight an unconventional war that they were not used to. This was also the first war that the United States had fought where the terrain helped the enemy greatly which helped the change come even faster. The NVA did not have a line of troops but instead operated in smaller groups all around the units. They could mass together and attack from any direction. In order to combat this, the Army split areas of operation between divisions. The divisions than divided it between brigades, brigades to battalions, and battalions to companies. This affected the Artillery in many ways. They could not mass their fires due to the size of the AO, Artillery was spread out over the AO to provide maximum coverage to the maneuver elements, Firing batteries were isolated with their supported battalions, they also did not have the freedom to move around. Firing Batteries were set up like an umbrella to cover as much of the AO as they could. This was a new role to them but it was vital under the circumstances. Another change that occurred was that the batteries were very far from their parent battalions to receive the support they needed and the units they were attached to did not have the equipment or the expertise to support them fully. To fix this wherever they moved with the maneuver element they were placed under operational control of a Field Artillery battalion headquarters in that area and received support...

...I. Sergeant Humphreys, Milton W. A. A Noncommissioned Officer’s Beginning B. A New Concept On September 14, 1844 Milton Wylie Humphreys was born at Anthony's Creek, Va. As he grew into a child, his teachers discovered that Humphreys' intelligence was strongly rooted in mathematics. While still in grade school, using the flat side of large rock formations as a chalk board, he solved complex math equations. In 1860, he furthered his education by attending Washington College in Lexington, Va. Milton’s educational success surpassed his expectations and was at the head of his class when the Civil War broke out. As soon as he met the age requirement, he immediately enlisted in Bryan's Battery of the 13th Virginia Light Artillery. On account of his academic achievements and his unequalled mathematical skills, Humphreys was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned the position of gunner. This 18-year-old Confederate sergeant developed a new concept that would change the way artillery was used in the battlefield forever. On May 16, 1863 Bryan’s Battery of the 13th Virginia Light Artillery was ordered to move toward Fayetteville, Va. Their task was to create a diversion by attacking the Federal fortification there. On the morning of May 19 two miles from Fayetteville, they came into contact small with a force of Union cavalry. Bryan's guns opened fire and drove them into the woods. As the Union soldiers reengaged, the Confederates maneuvered to...

If an organization has taken a tax position that would not hold up under examination, then the organization could have a substantial tax liability. An organization must identify tax positions and whether or not it is likely that each position would be sustained by a taxing authority and it appears not more likely that the position could be sustained upon examination the company must calculate the taxes, interest and penalties that would be owed. Issue 1 Determine the adjustments required to the Company’s preliminary 2009 financial statements to comply with ASC 740-10 by completing the table provided below, and justify your position.
