CHAPTER 1

Introduction
Each year millions of people vow to finally kick the cigarette habit only to watch their optimistic expectations to give up in smoke. But if they've tried and failed with conventional smoking cessation approaches wether it’s the use of nicotine gum,counseling, or behavior modification they often look outside the mainstream motivated by the hope that alternative medicine might finally deliver them from a life cluttered with cigarette packs and tarnished by nicotine-stained teeth.

Background of the Study
Smoking remains a pediatric epidemic with so many adolescents stubbornly refusing to quit.
This epidemic is predicted to kill 250 million children and adolescents who are alive today, a third of whom live in developing countries.Tobacco is addictive, carcinogenic and deadly.
Analysis has shown that a tobacco leaf contains about 1,000 chemical substances. The smoke carries more than 4,000 chemically different compounds, mostly harmful to man. Tobacco is known or probable cause of some 25 different diseases for lung cancer, bronchitis and
Emphysema it is a major cause. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there are 1.1 billion smokers in the world at the beginning of this decade and it is one-third of world’s adult population. Four million people died yearly from tobacco related diseases throughout the world. WHO estimates that the figure will rise to 10million by the year 2030 that’s one death every three seconds. Help is available through treatment methods that involve a combination of behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy, telephone helplines, national and international tobacco-free days and stop smooking seminars but both smokers and healthcare professionals agree that the challenge of quiting remains formidable. ...Seeing how high my level of stress is, was definitely an eye opener. My score was 395 which in the books means that I am in a major life crisis and have an 80 percent chance of illness. I know that I stress out about a lot and have many things going on at one time during periods of my life, I did not think I was as stressed out as I have learned. That is a very shocking analysis for me. I do not really have any stress relieving methods that I use but I see that I should definitely start using some. I think the number one technique that would really help me would be to exercise. I have been putting that off for awhile and feel like the procrastination actually adds to my stress as well. Being able to start working out and relieving stress by doing it would be a win-win situation. I think exercising is a very positive way to relieve stress because it allows to remove anger or aggression, if you have any, without actually being angry. This technique may not work as well for those with disabilities just because there might not be a very big variety of equipment to choose from. ... There are many ways to cope with stress but we learned about 3 specific strategies in lab. These three included cognitive, behavioral, and avoidance strategies. Active cognitive strategies include actively thinking about a situation to adjust more effectively to it. This strategy is one of the better ways to cope with stress. Then you have active behavioral strategies and this involves actively taking some type of action to improve a problem situation that is stressing you out. This is the other strategy that is best for relieving stress. The third strategy that we had learned about was the avoidance strategy. This strategy is not a good strategy to use and can sometimes make things worse. Avoidance involves keeping the stressful situation and circumstances out of awareness. This could potentially cause more stress. The strategy that I tend to use the most is the active behavioral strategy. I like to take action in everything that I do, especially when it involves things that are causing or will cause myself to stress out. An example of that would be of someone had a problem with me I would go talk to them about it and try to figure out what the problem is. Instead of avoiding it or just thinking about it I would go do something about it. Another example could be if I had a bad grade in a class I would go see my professor to see what I could do about it and make that extra effort. Data collected from 400 people working in a variety of companies in Flanders indicated that the values of openness to change, conservation, self-transcendence, and self-enhancement were important predictors of stress. People who reported high value conflict also experienced more stress.
