In class, I was made to be involved in service learning. My initial reaction was skepticism and anxiety. Then I embarked on the research and went to Salvation Army. Based on my research, I think that service learning is a program where students are involved in different activities which are mainly focused on local needs and at the same time developing their academic skills and commitment to the society.
I went to Salvation Army which is located on 8145 Highway 6 S, Houston Tx 77083 and interviewed an Office Manager by the name of Quinta Johnson. At first I was nervous but she was very receptive and was willing to have me interview her after telling her the purpose of my visit. Based on the questions I asked her, I received a lot of information about this nonprofit organization. Salvation Army is a nonprofit organization and partly a church. It was established to help the less fortunate, the poor and homeless people, drugs and alcohol addicts by providing financial assistance, housing, rehabilitation and counseling. It does this so that those people in need do not waste away or indulge in any criminal activities. While it provides the assistance, the members spread the Word of God. It also organizes youth and adult programs where they teach on moral issues. Salvation Army goes international as well, they are in Canada, countries in Europe, Africa and South America. The Salvation Army has 10 full time employees, 6 part time and hundreds of volunteers from the whole of Houston who come to donate food, clothes, build shelters and preach the gospel. It receives funding from the fundraising which the members of staff do every two weeks. It also receives funds from generous people who donate money online, or they call the toll free phone line, or they go straight to the church and donate some money. On a typical workday some members of staff remain in the center to keep things organized and receive alms like food, furniture and clothing from people while some other members go out to the field to do charity work like feeding people, preaching. To the staff and volunteers, what they do is not stressful work because what they do gives them the satisfaction that they are doing the work of God by helping the less privileged. They all consider it a blessing. After the interview, Ms. Johnson gave me a tour of the Center. I saw where some staff members where putting away donations of food and clothes, I went to their store where they had a lot of furniture, household items and clothes for sale. Ms. Johnson stated that they were being sold so that they can have funds for the upkeep of the rehabilitation center for recovering drug and alcohol addicts. This service learning project has impacted my knowledge in so many ways. Firstly, coming to the Salvation Army made me realize how blessed I am, and that some families do need help so I want to be of help in any possible way. I see the joy in doing so. Secondly, this has enhanced my skills, especially in areas of communication and collaboration. Thirdly, and most importantly, it explored my values and beliefs and gave me the opportunity to act on those values and beliefs. On Dec 7, 2012 I went to the Salvation Army center because some members of staff were going to the Rehabilitation Center on 1015 Hemphill Street, Houston Tx 77007 to give food and preach. I joined in stocking the food items in the truck and drove behind them to the rehabilitation center. When we got there, we offloaded those food items and dropped them off in the center. Then I partnered with two staff members and we went to preach to the program participants and offered them spiritual advise. It was an amazing experience and I really look forward to doing it again next week.

...Asia Jackson April 19, 2013 ISS 215 Hussain I’ve learned many things throughout this experience but developing patience was the most essential to me. Prior to starting this position in the Service Learning Center program, my expectations were a little different. I expected this program to be strictly about helping young children develop good academic skills. Most importantly by helping them with homework and teaching them information, related to their assignments, that they did not understand. I expected to interact with kids strictly academically and maybe and few games from time to time so that the students can be enthused about learning and actually remember the information that they are learning. I expected this to be a very smooth learning and fun process for not only the children but me as well. What I actually experienced was a little different. The students had so much enthusiasm that they didn’t even wants to sit down to complete their homework assignments. Some of them were difficult to work with. As I stated before in my previous essay, there was a student who gave a lot of the student workers a hard time with his bold demeanor and his stubborn attitude. There was a particular time where I had to work with him and he was very disruptive and did not listen to anything I said. I had to confront the staff members about his behavior so that they can work with him because he was out of my control. Trying to keep a positive attitude, being a little stern and having...

Service Learning Benefits

...Summary Service Learning entails a different kind of learning as it prepares you to get a feel of what the real world is like. Studies show Service Learning to be very successful with students as it involves them reflecting and bringing forward their own knowledge when engaging in the community. As students are forced to reflect on what they’ve been taught and applying this knowledge, it has led to greater success in comparison to a student who takes notes while listening to a prof who speaks for a solid 2-3hrs being less effective. Therefore, this learning is highly beneficial as the student is continuously applying self-knowledge when dealing with real life occurrences, which also helps prepare for further situations. From Service learning,...

Essay On Service Learning

...Generations of people pass down their roles in society to the succeeding generation, who will reflect on the past for inspiration from the marvelous successes and learn from the disastrous mistakes, to maintain society’s future. Service learning is important to help lead the youth into contributing to society as many people today take what is given to them for granted. The youth often question their education with ‘How will this apply to real life’, and through service learning, they will discover how the skills they developed from education will be applied to their lives. The role of a citizen is never ending as it continues throughout the span of one’s life and kin. Service learning is to teach others how to become citizens. Citizens are expected to be involved in their community, either politically or by assisting those within the community. It is a valuable kind of education as young people often question the practicality of their formal education and those in the workforce may only do one task repetitively throughout their lives. Serving others will give these people an opportunity to grow or to become productive assets to their community as well as giving...

Service Learning Reflection

...In class Tuesday, our guest speaker,??? talked to us about service learning at Western Carolina University. She told us what service learning is, how to get involved, and how it can impact our lives and those around us. Service learning relates to my personal, academic, and professional goals in many different ways. I love helping people and doing my part to help better my community, including my new community here at WCU. Volunteering is a great way to connect with your community, and it makes me feel like I’ve done something to improve the lives of those in need. Our learning plan includes service learning that fits our chosen major and our interests. With athletic training as my major and physical therapy as my career choice, it would make...

Service Learning Reflection

...This organization’s mission is to assist visually impaired children to be able to adapt to normal life with bearing as little trauma as possible living with a disability. The Anchor Center prepares children to enter the public school system and being successful in all aspects of their life regardless of their situation. Additionally, children can receive eye exams at the Anchor Center to better determine what treatment is best for their condition. Beyond the diagnosis, the organization offers very hands-on and effective approaches such as music therapy and small group. Also, family support services can be obtained through the organization as well, which I personally recognize to be extremely important. I believe any parent who has a child with a disability suffers emotional distress that required professional support as well. This would make an ideal service learning project because the Anchor Center serves a very unique group. Many people take their good standing health for granted, and they don’t always think twice about how fortunate they are to wake up every day and visually see the world around them. I believe volunteering with blind children will undoubtedly offer a new perspective for volunteers and empathy for the children. Lastly, I wholeheartedly believe that this is a foundation which was formed on altruistic motives which is reassuring and it gives me hope in humanity especially during difficult...

Service Learning Experience

...My service learning project was at a seventy six year old woman’s home, throughout four weeks with one visit a week at an hour and a half per visit. I had originally discussed with R.T. about what she would like to have her occupational outcome to be (long term goal), she told me that she would like to visit family more but was worried about leaving home, afraid something would happen when she was away. Some of my strengths and skill/talents that I felt I exhibited during the visits were good verbal/non-verbal communication, asked open ended and non-open ended questions, teach back method, research and therapeutic use of self. Therapeutic use of self (TUS) as defined by AOTA allows occupational therapy practitioners to develop and manage their therapeutic relationship with clients by using narrative and clinical reasoning; empathy; and a client-centered, collaborative approach to service delivery. One of the limitations I had with my client R.T. was that I couldn’t travel with...

Service Learning Reflection

...Service Learning Reflection During my experiences with service leaning included: painting a bathroom, cleaning inside and outside of houses, and helping coach basketball. With each of these experiences I learned new things about what I was doing and learned new things about myself. As I went to each of these situations I was nervous as to what was expected of us. In each experience the person was good at explaining what they wanted to be achieved for the time I was there. When helping at the Crittenton Center she was ready for our group and everything planned out as to what each person would do. My group of three was to paint a small bathroom. We were all able to use out past experiences of painting to help finish the project. When helping out with Kayla Nieman, I helped her clean and organize her classroom and helped coach afterschool basketball with her. I learned the most with the coaching. I had to learn how to be patient with the players and allow them time to learn the new skill. When working with Lacey Hallstrom, I helped clean up outside. The experience went well because I had known her previously before. I think this made it comfortable for both of us. When helping out with my family, I found out that I can deal with this bad situation. I think helping out directly with looking for items in the house helped me and my family cherish what we had. Also, with this happening there has been lots of phone calls and paperwork. I have learned how to do some important paperwork...

Social Service Learnings

...The free health camp required voluntary and effective people’s participation to render its services. I volunteered in the camp and helped as much as I could. My participation in the health camp was useful enough to aid at least a few people. From managing the crowd to helping the ills, I contributed as much as I could. I assisted the health attendants in the camp which made it easier for them to perform their duties. I volunteered consistently in the week long health camp which was a virtuous contribution towards the betterment of the community. Hence, my service was useful because it helped the organization and the community as a whole. “Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.” This quote by the Light of Asia, Gautam Buddha, is content with the message for community service. The 42 hours of service at the health camp organized by K.B. Polyclinic was not just an opportunity to help the communal people of Banepa, but also a platform to learn something. The health camp basically enriched my information on health. I came across many diseases and health related issues in the camp during the service duration. I became quite acquainted with those health hazards and their prevention techniques while helping people during the health camp. I could use my experience from this camp to help people in similar health campaigns in days ahead. Apart from health issues, I learnt to work, coordinate...

Community Service Learning Paper

...The effects of service learning versus community service While service learning and community service are two very similar services, they are two very different entities and can teach us different moralities. Service learning attempts to intergrade schooling alongside community service in a wider range area. Community service is going around to close communities and simply helping out in different ways. They both achieve the aspects of helping the surrounding communities in a number of different ways. Service learning and community service have been studied by numerous psychologists. By doing so there has become a mountain of evidence suggesting that both service learning and community service promotes self-efficacy. Research reviewed by Richard Kraft and James Krug brought them to the conclusion that both approaches benefited students (Kraft & Krug, 1994). Although, similarities between the two leave them hard to tell apart from one to the other. It is the differences...

Reflection On Service Learning Experience

...A service learning experience is the application of reflection to consider the change that needs to be made in order to help a community run more efficiently (Homan, 2016). Throughout my service learning experience, I have developed new professional skills and gained a fresh perspective on the experience and my population served. I believe that in any new work environment one can gain these tools from fellow colleagues/coaches, supervisors/advisors and the individuals served. Additionally, working on a group project that spanned the entire semester challenged my teamwork skills and gave me new insight on effective communication and consensus. As a result of my service learning experience, I grew professionally in terms of understanding group dynamics when working towards a common goal. For example, through working with Girls in the Game, I formed a passion for the program and the population we served this semester. In the beginning of the...

Even though the setting will be different because it is with junior high and high school student, I felt that it was still a great opportunity. Not only will I be getting experience teaching to students, but I also have the lesson plans and scripts that have to be gone by. This will give me practice for going by my lesson plans and scripts. Not only will I have to be going to the plans, but I will be working with another person. Sometimes in the school setting you need to be able to plan with other teachers or even team teach. Service Learning Research Paper

...I understand why service learning is required and fully support it. There are many reasons why service learning should be required. I grew up doing things for my community. I think that service learning should be enforced in schools. I have grown to learn how the program not only benefits and helps us but it helps the ones around us. Service learning betters us as students and as people of the community. It is something good that really everyone should partake in. What is service learning? My definition of service learning is a learning strategy for students to get involved with the community to better the community, learn from it and reflect from it as well. According to the University of Texas Arlington, "Service learning integrates community service into academic coursework, whereby students engage in classroom activities and reflection related to the performance of local service projects within the course." The University of Texas Arlington have four components of a service learning program: Service learning projects address community-identified needs and heightens...

...Samuel Durham American Government Professor Tapia 12/03/15 Service Learning Reflection Paper For my service learning project I volunteered as an intern at the 5000 role models project of excellent program. Head director Paul Wilson and his staff welcomed me with open arms. During my time there I assisted with many activities which helped me learn some great communication skills and also greatly benefited the staff as well. During my internship I was involved in encouraging mentors of different fields such as Police Officers, Firefighters, Military Veterans and others to come out and support young men who are headed in the right direction. I found my self-surrounded in a setting that I saw openly was consisted on pure professionalism. Every day that I walked inside of that office I received nothing but respect, kindness and admiration. Service Learning and Why It Is Bad

...The two readings this week discusses the importance of examining the limitations of service learning and the need to be critical of the services provided by student. Morton criticises the widely used Starfish Hurling story where a young individual attempts to help washed up starfishes. He considers it a miseducative analogy that simplifies the intricacies of human agency or in this case the starfish, who has no voice or say in the matter of being hurled back into the sea. In conclusion, Morton finds more merit in community service and communication between the parties involved, than individual acts of kindness without dialogue between service recipients and providers. Eby reiterates a similar position highlighting that students may learn from the service learning however; he is critical of the effectiveness of the service provided on a structural level. He points to potential negative effects of service learning such as blaming individuals, neglect in mutual communication and autonomy of recipients being compromised. He points out that a good design in service learning would include balancing the agency of the primary stakeholders which consists of the students, faculty, educational institution, service recipients, community agencies and the communities involved. Firstly, Morton’s piece reminded me of Johnson’s piece on Privilege and Oppression we discussed last week. The one thing that stood out to me was Morton’s criticism of the narrative of individual acts of kindness by...
