Smartphone addiction

“Hold on, I'm getting a text………..Right, so you were saying…wait, I'm getting another one.”
Over the last few years smartphones have become an increasingly important part of our daily lives. Research shows that around 1 in 5 around the world owns a smartphone and that number will only increase over the years. In India the number is slightly lower at 1 in 10 but its high growth rate will soon bring it on par with the global average. This has led to a situation where a flip phone is looked on with the same surprise as it was when released.
Today we have found many uses for a smartphone, right from as an alarm clock to wake us in the morning to a music player to entertain us while travelling to a portable gaming device to help us get past those boring Wednesday afternoon classes. We even use it as a second screen while we are watching TV simply because it feels unnatural not to have it lying around. We have become so used to it that it’s no longer considered impolite to take out a phone while having a conversation with real people around us.
It’s a sad irony that the technology that was developed to help mankind save time is now the biggest reason for wastage of time. Many of us are guilty of just absent mindedly tapping at our screens pointlessly moving between apps just to pass time. Access to multiple messaging apps has made us more impatient than ever as we wait for a reply. Long conversations have been replaced by short messages with emoticons acting as a substitute for emotion. Perhaps the biggest victim has been language as grammar has been pushed aside in the pursuit of speed. At some point of time we have to step back and ask ourselves how dependent we have become on this block of plastic and metal. It’s almost amazing how much of our lives have changed since we got smartphones and yet how little we know about it. According to a study conducted on 1,600 people, it was found that 44% of them experienced withdrawal-like symptoms if they didn't interact with their phones for a week. Another found that late night usage (as 56% admitted to doing) messed with the body clock and reduced the amount of sleep possible leaving them feeling more tired and groggy in the morning where 70% of them were back on their smartphones within an hour.
Getting away from our smartphones has become an almost impossible job. We are dependent on them for some very useful things and everyday activities. However it wouldn't hurt to try by at least some ground rules which keeps us away to enjoy the outsides for longer times. The first and biggest rule would be to remember that not every beep or vibration has to be attended to immediately. Second would be to set timings during which your phone should not be accessed. It is recommended that not facing a screen for at least one hour before sleeping will result in better REM sleep which has been known to improve concentration and retention capabilities. We also need to consciously remember to ask why we need to use our smartphone at that particular moment to avoid random moments of mindless tapping.
In conclusion, in a world where the smartphone is becoming ever more integrated with our daily lives, we need to find ways to move away from it so as to ensure that we retain our independence from the machine.

...Addiction to your smartphone While addiction to your favorite portable gadget can be both hard to define and oddly socially acceptable, too much attention to technology can leave you tired and unable to concentrate. Here are some ways to get your life back, now. But are we really addicted? Some of the signs that you have to take in consideration to declare yourself an addict may be: * Do you reach for your smartphone first thing in the morning? * Do you check your smartphone last thing at night? * Do you break off conversation to check your smartphone immediately when a new notification comes in? * Do you take your smartphone to the bathroom with you? * Do you sometimes play with your smartphone while people are talking to you? * Do you constantly find new uses for your smartphone to legitimize your attachment? * Do you check your smartphone while watching a movie at the cinema? * Do you refuse to ever turn your smartphone off? * Do you keep your smartphone visible and within reach at all times? * Do you sometimes just look at your smartphone even although it isn’t doing anything? * Do you panic when you misplace your phone, even for a minute? * Do you have to charge your smartphone more than once a day? If you racked up more than nine yesses then you need to check yourself into the nearest clinic for a technological detoxication. If you scored between five and eight yesses then there’s still hope for you, but you need to...

Slaves to the Smartphone

...Slaves to the smartphone; Schumpeter The Economist[pic]402. 8775[pic] (Mar 10, 2012): n/a. 針對語音瀏覽器,開啟檢索到的項目反白 摘要 (摘要) 翻譯摘要 mart devices are sometimes empowering. They put a world of information at our fingertips. They free people to work from home instead of squeezing onto a train with malodorous strangers. That is a huge boon for parents seeking flexible work hours. Smartphones and tablets can also promote efficiency by allowing people to get things done in spare moments that would otherwise be wasted, such as while queuing for coffee. They can even help slackers create the illusion that they are working around the clock, by programming their e-mail to be sent at 1am. But for most people the servant has become the master. Not long ago only doctors were on call all the time. Now everybody is. Bosses think nothing of invading their employees' free time. Work invades the home far more than domestic chores invade the office. Otherwise-sane people check their smartphones obsessively, even during pre-dinner drinks, and send e-mails first thing in the morning and last thing at night. This is partly because smartphones are addictive. The faster smartphones become and the more alluring the apps that are devised for them, the stronger the addiction will grow. Spouses can help by tossing the darned devices out of a window or into a bucket of water. But ultimately it is up to companies to outsmart the smartphones by insisting that everyone turn them off from time to time. 全文 • 翻譯全文 ...

Argumentative Essay About Technology

...this generation today are relying on technology then they ever have. Some Americans disagree that technology can be used for helping people in situations. Technology is a positive tool for American teenagers because they are keeping in touch with friends and family, preparing for their future, and staying connected in emergency situations. Having a phone is a good way to stay in touch with friends and family. One easy way they can keep in touch is through technology. Family members that often go off to war want to keep in touch by facetime or email. Technology has allowed this generation to see their loved ones more often than usual. In “For People with Disabilities, Smartphone Use May be a Matter of Survival, Not Addiction." by Jamison Hill states that, “Refugees separated by war use their smartphones to keep in contact with family and access the Internet to read news relevant to their situation or tell their story on social media”(Hill). People that go off to fight for their country can’t see their family, so the only way to contact them is through technology. Technology...

Smartphones Effects

...Running Head: SMARTPHONES AND THEIR EFFECT ON OUR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS Smartphones and their Effect on our Social Interactions Ashley L****** NMCC Abstract We walk through this world with our heads down. Immersed in the technological realm, we disregard the real. We converse with our hands rather than our mouths, tapping keyboards and touchpads to the rhythm of our thoughts. This is the way we communicate in the 21st century. In the last decade, advances in information technologies have substantially altered the way humans interact. Between email, texting, social networking, instant messaging, and Skype, people now have the resources that would make it possible to spend days or months without coming face-to-face with another person, yet still remain connected with the world. I love my smartphone. I am in awe at just how much phones have advanced in the last 20 years. From the first one that was gigantic in size, then leading to a smaller simple flip phone to these beautiful, amazing slim pieces of hardware that can do more than I could have ever imagined a phone doing. Smartphones are something to be amazed with. Smartphones can certainly make our lives easier for us as we use them for everyday tasks such as communicating, checking our calendars, using as alarm clocks, as calculators, setting reminders and so much more. However, as smartphones keep advancing with new ways to make our lives easier, are they hindering our natural need for social...

5 Ways the Iphone Changed Our Lives

...“5 ways the iPhone changed our lives” On June 28, 2007, Nokia was the top selling mobile-phone company in the world, people stopped working when they left their computers, Android phones didn't exist, and high-powered executives were addicted to thumbing on their BlackBerrys. The next day, Apple's first iPhone went on sale. At $600, it was a luxury item at first. But five years later, the phone's dramatic impact can be seen in our daily lives, schools, factories and boardrooms. To date, more than 217 million iPhones have been sold, and they're being used by construction workers to read blueprints, doctors to diagnose patients, governments to improve services and parents to quiet their kids in restaurants. To ring in its 5th birthday, here are five ways the iPhone has made a mark on the world. A new way of interacting with computers In 2007, we were a nation of skilled texters, banging out OMG-filled coded messages at lightning speeds on numerical keypads and physical keyboards. The iPhone was lacking either of those, instead offering a nothing-but-screen keyboard. It was a classic Apple move toward dead-simple usability, and it helped bring a slice of computing to a whole new audience, including technophobes, kids, senior citizens and people with visual or hearing impairments. Suddenly, users could navigate their phones with a few swipes of the finger. Kids intuitively seemed to know how to use it. And the phone ushered in a new wave of touchscreen devices...

...could do it all. However, existing mobile device companies are still in direct competition and RIM will need to continue developing their technology to win dominance in the Smartphone market. PROBLEM How can RIM develop Blackberry to overtake its competitors in terms of sales and market shares? KEY FINDINGS     The first Blackberry was introduced in 1998 as a wireless hand held computer. In 1999, Blackberry's lines of products were equipped with voice and data transmission. This led to an explosive demand. RIM's employees grew from 1250 in 2001 to 7000 in 2009. They have a new and expanded target market. ASSUMPTIONS  A prevalent assumption we’ve made is that RIM will continue to have enough capital and resources necessary to pursue new technologies and innovations. This is important because research and development requires large amounts of investments. Another is that existing RIM customers will continue to be loyal to the Blackberry brand regardless of new marketing strategies and products. This assumption is made so that market shares can only grow. RIM has the ability to develop new types of products.   SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths  High customer loyalty to the Blackberry line creates a long lasting business relationship. The term “crackberry” is used to describe users’ addiction to the device. To date, there are...
