However, small businesses are the majority of whom customers give their business. “According to the United States Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Advocacy, 99.7 percent of all U.S. firms are small businesses (Cooper, 2012).” What is a Nonprofit Organization? Governance in Non-Profit Healthcare

...Governance in Non-Profit Healthcare MGMT 640 Executive Summary Good leadership, financial management, and governance are the essentials for success in any organisation, whether the organisation is a non-profit organisation or a for-profit organisation. In non-profit healthcare the seamless interaction of all the parts makes the organisation successful as a whole. Service provided must be consistent with the goals of the organisation. Agencies and watchdogs have become even more visible seeking accountability and transparency. But how do leaders within the organisation work together to make it a success, how are they governed to achieve the goals of the organisation? In for-profit effective governance is easily recognisable, and achieved. The most important element in an organisation that operates for profit is its balance sheet, great sales and rising stock prices, profits being paid out as dividends, no mention of fraud in the company accounting, these are all excellent indicators of effective governance. In non-profits more so in healthcare, it is terribly difficult to measure or see effective governance. Also, the idea of optimum efficiency may have differing connotations for each stakeholder. Non-profits benefit from the luxury of not having to suffer agency conflicts; nevertheless they must ensure that there are measures in place that ensures transparency. Based on the five (5) overarching strategies suggested...

This book fair will take place in San Francisco, California. There are many non-profit organizations here in San Francisco that could use the help of a fundraiser. There are schools, health organizations, medical clinics, homeless shelters, and food banks to name a few. Successful planning and organizing a fundraiser will make this project successful. To begin the planning stage of this fundraiser, I will need to do much research. This is going to be a book fundraiser. Looking at cost effective ways to hold this fundraiser is crucial since the outcome is to raise money for a particular organization. I will first look at a venue. Is it less expensive to hold a fundraiser on the Internet or is it more cost efficient to hold it a location. Having a fundraiser on the Internet does not seem a personable to me. However, it might be more cost efficient. Holding a fundraiser at a physical location seems that it would be more successful. The advertising and promotion of a fundraiser are just as important. Getting the most exposure to the public will help with the success of my fundraiser. I will need to research to find out if advertising and promoting this book fundraiser is more or less expensive than with actual physical advertising. I am leaning more to the physical...

The Importance of Culture to the Success of Non-Profit Organizations

...The importance of culture to the success of non-profit organizations There are three different sectors of industry: private, public (government) and non-profit. The non-profit sector’s purpose is simple, no matter what type of business it is they serve to meet the needs the private and public sectors lack thereof (McDonald). Most non-profit organizations (NPO) are programs that cater to the community or serve people in order to improve the quality of life or are seeking social change. By being socially responsible of others nonprofits are breaking down barriers to build a better global community. Non-profits exist in almost every industry or line of work. Some popular ones are women’s rights, animal rights, environment awareness, health, and community development. When there is a cause and a group of people willing to work for it, a non-profit organization can be formed. They range in size, from a small local organization of just a few members, to nationally recognized organizations with several locations domestic and international. Non-profits are known for having unique cultures compared to for-profit and government organizations because there is some form of moral compass driving the purpose of the NPO versus the sole purpose to make money. Culture in the workplace is essential to the success of nonprofits because it lays the foundation for the direction of the organization based on similar beliefs and values and it is the determinant of the behavior or actions of...

Financial Management of for-Profit and Nonprofit Organizations

...Management of For-Profit and Nonprofit Organizations by Kamilah A’Vant Submitted to MGMT 640 9040 November 13, 2011 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This paper will outline the similarities and differences between for-profit organizations and nonprofit and organizations. Many view for-profit and nonprofit companies as very different business organizations; however they have many commonalities. Both for-profit and nonprofit organizations are corporations. As a corporation, both are legal enterprises created to operate and transact business. Corporations hire employees to manage day-to-day activities and act in its best interests. For-profit and nonprofit companies work to control spending, find ways to bring in revenue, operate under organizational structures and utilize accounting practices to track and report how efficiently assets are used. Nonprofit organizations fall under a large umbrella in respect to size and mission. The environment under which they do business helps set them apart from for-profit companies. Nonprofit companies have a great need for their services, face cuts in funding and capital limitations. In this paper I will focus on the financial management techniques used by for-profit and nonprofit companies. I will address the following questions: • What are the sources of funds available to for-profit and nonprofit companies? • Is there a conflict between the mission and bottom line of nonprofit companies? • What types of...

Ethics and Social Justice

...Nakita Davis Walden University Final Project: Ethics and Social Justice Non-Profit organization A non-profit organization is an organization that generally has the aim of serving the interests of the public. A nonprofit organization is a charitable organization that legally does not declare its profit but rather, it goes ahead and utilizes the revenue they have accumulated after their normal operating expenses in their services to the public interest. Therefore, the organization uses the surplus revenues to achieve their mission and purpose rather than dividing the income among the directors as dividends or profits. Recently, in many countries all over the world, many nonprofit organizations have been exempted from income tax, as well as other taxes because they apply for tax-exempt status. Hence, this adds an advantage to them because many of these nonprofit organizations can have more revenues because of the fewer deductions that they have. Despite all these, the many nonprofit organizations do face many challenges for a number of reasons. Therefore, their management is always in touch so as to keep these organizations moving towards their targets for the common benefit of its beneficiaries across the globe. Also, nonprofit organizations comprise of both paid and volunteer staff. A nonprofit organization can have clients, it can as well offer products and services, which will need revenue, should make itself known through marketing, and must be critically concerned...

Leadership Styles

... Whether it involves executing a Business Continuity Plan or leading a nonprofit organization in helping with the malnutrition epidemic in Africa, there are a few different leadership styles out there and each is very different from one another. The style of leadership is dependent on which kind of setting you are in. Surgical attendings are the leaders and teacher to the surgical residents, the type of coaching role they play differs from the commanding role of a sergeant in the military. The graphs below are effective in illustrating the styles of leadership and how they are applied. Each of these styles is very important for a leader to have. Depending on which field of work they are in, a different style may need to be used based on the situation. When a leader is able to be authoritative yet democratic and still coach his team, they will constantly be motivated to be more. The theories of Leadership include Great Man Theories, Trait Theories, Contingency Theories, Situational Theories, Behavioral Theories, Participative Theories, Management Theories and Relationship Theories. I have constructed a table that has a simple overview of each of these theories. Theory | Overview | Great Man Theories | “Great leaders are born not made” Historically, leadership roles were for a man who was a natural leader, especially in the Military. | Trait Theories | Trait theory is actually similar to Great Man theory, in the sense that it is believed certain people inherit specific...

This non-profit organization goes by the name of The Lightfactory, and is known as one of four museums of photography and film in the United States. The board of directors requested our team to develop an e-mail campaign strategy to improve membership and donor rates. However, as systems engineers, none of our team members had any prior knowledge of marketing or segmenting. Therefore our team was forced to do some extensive research on non-profit marketing, as well as database segmenting. The ideals and concepts learned throughout the research process were eventually used as a foundation for completing the project objectives proposed by the Lightfactory board of directors. Segmenting the database was a success and provided some key insights about the LightFactory’s customer base. Most of the customer’s in the database were segmented into three major populations: Big givers, Middle givers, and Low givers. These segments are customers...
