The Cane

The cane. Simply put the stigma of the cane alone can be a daunting prospect. Never mind the fact that I don’t have a disability. In all honesty (and ethics aside) I was afraid to use a cane in public because canes are an instant label. Does it make any sense at all that I would be more comfortable using crutches than I would a cane? No? Me either, but that’s the truth of it in a nutshell. Realistically, though perhaps not logically, crutches convey something temporary, an injury that will eventually heal. An injury that perhaps could even be conceivably derived from my athleticism gone awry, a sign of my wholeness on pause that would eventually return. A cane labels you as weaker than the rest, unhealthy even, takes you aside socially, mentally and physically from those that walk and live unassisted, strong, normally. I don’t like thinking that I am capable of snap judgments on the characters of others whom I have never met. I don’t like to think that I am capable of thinking so shallowly. In fact when I am in the presence of someone that is disabled I can’t help but want to help. I consider their apparatus to be a part of their personal space, an extension of their bodies and respect their needs which are usually no more than patience and space. I will always hold doors, reach something for those that can’t or be sure my children are respecting boundaries and be patient around those that need more time to complete tasks. Though, in the confines of my human body, I found that it is nearly impossible to fight that first and fraction of a second reaction of being more capable than those that are using an aid, a wheelchair, a cane or walker. Why? Is it an instinctual presence in our brains that is hard wired to size up anyone that comes within our scope? I started to think about this over the course of my week with the cane and gauge not only my reactions to others but try and glimpse the reactions of others around me, their reactions to myself. The answer is a resounding, YES! We are constantly and always judging everyone around us, we can’t help it. The old woman who looks ill, the teenage girl with the too short skirt, the pretty mom that looks so put together even with her 4 kids(‘how does she do it”?), the man that keeps looking at me when he thinks I’m not looking….and we are all doing it. Why? I don’t know exactly, it’s hard to tell without knowing the exact lives of everyone else though I feel that we are all (most all) on constant meter to self-check our normalcy against the others in our day to day society. This left me feeling better and in a good place to start my hands on research with the cane. Not better that I was now free to judge everyone that I came across but better that I recognized this in myself and would not allow myself to finalize an opinion based on a first impression. It is hard to honestly say that I felt any real contempt during the periods I chose to use the cane. It was evident that due to my age and amount of children in tow that I was a definite curiosity among the other shoppers and caused many to glance and quickly look away. It was amusing though that the reactions I got were in direct relation to the family I had with me while using a cane and not the perceived disablilty. You would think that I might get less notice when accompanied by my children as they would make me seem MORE capable, the opposite was definitely true. While no one ever asked me if they could help me reach something on a shelf or push my cart, I was given a wide berth (which really could either have been attributed to the cane or my cranky, donut craving 4 year old who knows at this point) and felt that I was being sized up as to whether or not I was in a position to be caring for children. How dare they?! I know that may sound irrational but I really honestly felt that I was being chastised for caring for others while I obviously couldn’t do something as simple as walk unassisted. “What if one of my daughters were to streak away from my cart”? they silently asked” what would you do then”? It was disturbing. Compared to my family outing, using the cane alone was almost easy, I felt almost invisible, a mystery with injury and not responsible for the lives of others. Was it fear of overstepping societal boundaries that kept others averting their eyes or something more? In both instances the curiosity from most was plain as day, the pity from some was irritating and the impatience was felt though rarely, which was relieving. I felt that my experience was uneventful and I felt guilty for not having to endure more during my week with the cane. I felt that I deserve more as I might have also shunned another unknowingly and this was my time to understand that. I hope that I hadn’t. One thing I can be sure of, is that I was afforded the chance to review and renew my way of thinking. How I have been molded by my particular environment and society and that now, however I may have unintentionally reacted in the past, I aim to recognize that how I view others as judgment is the true handicap for which there is no cure but education.

Cane Toads

...WHAT EFFECTS ARE CANE TOADS PRODUCING TOWARDS THE SUSTAINABILTY OF ECOSYSTEMS AND THE SURVIVAL OF NATIVE SPECIES Chelcy Jordan SUST 1000 October 10 2012 The introduction of invasive species can often lead to unpredictable alterations and a shift within natural ecosystems. Cane toads were originally introduced to Australia in 1935. They were brought into Australia to prey on specific pests that were attacking sugar cane plants. Cane toads are highly adaptive and can easily adjust to climate changes and feeding grounds. The growth of reproduction in cane toads has formed a species invasion on the habitat of native animals. Immense competition and a shift in ecosystems are a result of their significant growth rate. What effects are cane toads producing towards the sustainability of ecosystems and the survival of native species? Many animals, and plant species have been either finding new ways to adjust to changes caused by the introduction of cane toads. Cane toads have impacted natural ecosystems so drastically that they have left a strenuous effect on native species ability to maintain their own survival. This is crucial when looking at the effects cane toads have on sustaining plant and animal life within ecosystems. Dramatic changes in an ecosystem could potentially fail due to inadequate nutrients and energy distribution. It is important to examine ways in which cane toads affect ecosystems so environmentalists can predict potential negative shifts and try to develop...

Cane Corso Managerial Analysis

...CANE COSO v. PIT BULL: Let’s Compare Some Traits I have to say, we’re obviously biased here toward cane corsos, but we do love pit bulls nonetheless. So, I wanted to address the subject that seems to come up frequently about “Which is a better guard dog?” My immediate answer, hands-down, ALWAYS is the cane corso. While pit bulls are fierce and highly aggressive toward other dogs, they seldom attack people. They are very sociable, and make good family pets, despite their bad reputation. We have owned several pit bulls, so this is speaking from experience. They are very good hunting dogs…pits LOVE to be worked. And I doubt you’d ever find a better Frisbee chaser than a pit bull. But when it comes to guarding your ASSets, **ahem** I have to go with the cane corso every time. Plus, they’re still under the radar in terms of where you can own one and drive around with one in your vehicle, which is a bonus if you’re into driving around with your dog riding shotgun. Pit bulls are quickly becoming outlawed in many regions, sadly because of false media representations and also because people just don’t seem to want to devote the amount of time required to train such an active-breed dog…I guess it all goes back to the saying that dumb people just shouldn’t own dogs, but it’s still a free country in that respect. Here’s a link to an article that picks apart each breed a little better than I think I could do: http://www.squidoo.com/pittbullsvcanecorso This article, by...

Sugar Cane Toads Research Paper

...Cane toads or Bufo marinus as seen in the appendix Bufo meaning toad and Marunis meaning marine, were being used successfully in the Caribbean islands and in Hawaii to combat the cane beetle, a pest of sugar cane crops. After good reviews from overseas, Hawaii shipped a box of toads to Gordonvale, just south of Cairns. These were held in captivity for a while and then they were released into the sugar cane fields of the tropic north. It was later discovered that the toads can't jump very high so they did not eat the cane beetles which stayed up on the upper stalks of the cane plants. At the time of year when the beetle's larvae were emerging from the ground, no toads were about. So the cane toad, as it came to be known, had no impact on the cane...

Black Shack Alley vs Sugar Cane Alley

...Black Shack Alley: Movie vs. Book Sugar Cane Alley is a film directed by Euzhan Palcy that depicts Joseph Zobel’s novel, Black Shack Alley. Both the film and the novel are set in Martinique and follow the life of José as he matures and struggles to escape the poverty and hardships of a sugar cane plantation in the colonial Caribbean. With the love, sacrifice and support from his family, while both the movie and book narrate the same story of achievement and overcoming obstacles, it is remarkable to examine the adaptations Palcy made upon the original text. Whether it’s a change on character dialogues, appearances, or modifications to José maturity and education, every different adjustment made confronts and addresses the issues of slavery, racial inequality, and the push for a collective African heritage and identity conveyed through Zobel’s text. It is essential to point out that the most obvious difference between both works is the time discrepancy. In the novel, José’s maturity progresses over a period of many years, starting with the age of seven and elongating all the way through his education at the lyceé. On the other hand, Palcy presents José as having reached maturity very early in the movie. The incident of the broken bowl exemplifies this adaptation. In the original text the incident occurs when José invites his friends inside to snack on goodies and sugar (which was very protected by M’an Tine). Urged by José’s initiative, they then proceed to search the shack...

The Cane Cutter

...The Cane Cutters of the Queensland cane fields, between 1863 and 1904, were collectively and derogatively known as Kanakas. This group of approximately 62,000 people from a collection of Pacific Islands were forcefully transported from their homes and deceived about what awaited them in Australia (Miller, 2010). They were used as a cheap source of labour and came to Australia on big boats. They worked in the cane fields and were treated very poorly. The Pacific Island Cane Cutters came to Australia to work in the sugar cane fields of Queensland. In Far North Queensland, the sugar cane industry was just beginning to develop. Originally, after the crop had grown, the ‘white Australians’ had attempted to cut the cane. However, due to the hot temperature...

Sugar Cane

...Sugar Cane Today, sugar cane has many industrial uses and is one of the most widely used and cheapest domestic products Sugarcane is a tropical, perennial grass that forms lateral shoots at the base to produce multiple stems, typically three to four meters high and about five centimeters in diameter. Sugar cane probably originated in the island of New Guinea. Its cultivation spread along human migration routes to South-East Asia, India and to Fiji and Hawaii in 500-1100 AD. Sugarcane is the world's largest crop. In 2010, FAO estimates it was cultivated on about 23.8 million hectares, in more than 90 countries, with a worldwide harvest of 1.69 billion tonnes. Brazil was the largest producer of sugar cane in the world. The next three major producers, in decreasing amounts of production, is India, China, and Thailand Sugar is an addictive food, not only in humans but also in dogs and pigs and other animals with simple stomachs. The first settlers were farmers from other states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc. The area was referred to as White Settlement because it was the only community outside the fort (Fort Worth) that was settled entirely by white people. All of the other communities were mixed Indian and Whites. The area was about 10 miles west of the Fort. The land was rich and produced bumper crops of corn, grain, etc. A mill was established and the area did considerable trading, not only with the Indians, but other whites in the vicinity. The community remained more or less the same until 1940, when a bomber plant was built on the shores of Lake Worth in the area. The government built temporary housing for workers and businesses were established. Habakuk the Cane King

...Habakuk, the Cane King Introduction Success is a very important measure of an entrepreneur’s achievements and goals. Success can be measured by analysing various factors which could be qualitative and quantitative in nature. This means that defining success encompasses a broad spectrum. For instance, success can be measured by analysing the performance of the business, taking into consideration the expectations of stakeholders with an interest in the business venture, the nature of the expectations and the actual outcomes achieved relative to the expectations of the business venture. Analysing the performance of a venture can be measured for example by looking at the net profit of the business or its revenue and various profitability ratios of the venture. In addition, establishing relationships with others and achieving personal satisfaction are also important factors to consider when measuring the performance of the business. It has been indicated by Charles (2011) that the success of a new venture does indeed include meeting the expectations of interested parties. It has also been found by Charles (2011) that successful ventures are dependent on other factors such as the knowledge and skills of the entrepreneur. This knowledge can come from first-hand experience in a specific industry or research conducted in a specific area.
