...Women are motivated by money and success in Top Girls. This is evident when (2)However, Success for women in The Handmaid Tales is not defined by money but by surviving while keeping their values intact. The Handmaidens “learned to whisper without sound” and “learned to lip read” so that they could “exchange names”. By using the verb “learned” Atwood shows these women capable to acquire knowledge to adapt to situations while doing this together the women exchange pieces of their identity with one another establishing a stronger relationship. (3)In the past women hadn’t had the same freedom they once did. For example the character, Lady Nijo in Act One stated how she “belonged” the Emperor a position she was “brought” up from a “baby”. The word belonged suggests how she is a possession, an object, a thing without feelings to her a woman capable of making her own decisions. It implies it is the purpose of women to serve men; it’s what they’re bred for. The recurring b’s her conveys that she felt angry but there was very little she could do about it.(4) By contrast the women in the future dystopian novel once had freedom before and lost when Gilead came into power. Offred compares the value of the board game Scrabble when it was “once the game of old women”, “Now of course”; the value is “Now it’s different” it “is freedom”. Atwood uses the repetitive “Now” to emphasize how the sight Scrabble is intoxicating Offred and how she longs for freedom. It also demonstrates how the short...

...makes the toy quite easy to make. It is an ancient mechanical device used for ceremonial purposes and as a toy. It is an object in the middle of a cord and can be made to buzz by winding the cord while keeping the end stationary. The object moves by pulling and releasing the tension on the cord. The most common way that it was made was with a large button and some string. History of the toy As children in the 1950's, this was a favorite toy. It is interactive and although it doesn't seem to do much, the hypnotic whirring and the pulling to keep it moving kept us busy for a long time. There are several different kinds of spinning tops. In East Asia the conventional way of spinning the top is by using a string. By the late 16th century, tops like these were being used by adults in Britain. The Museum has a varied collection of spinning tops, humming tops and gyroscopes. A number of optical toys was developed in the early 19th century and it is used as spinning to create moving pictures. One of these is the zoetrope invented in 1834. It consists of a metal drum pierced by a series of thin vertical slots. Paper strips, depicting a moving figure or object, are placed inside. When the child spins the drum and looks through the slots, the pictures appear to move. This is due to the principle of “persistence of vision”; the brain remembers what the eye has seen for a fraction of a second and so “pieces together” the separate pictures. How to make a Button-String Toy? Note: You can...

...Top-Down, Bottom-Up and Metacognition – Discovering the Mind Angelica Lipscomb PHYC102-1402B-10 Robin Redfern June 15, 2014 Abstract In scientific psychology the question of how information is processed is achieved by asking to what amount a psychological procedure is motivated by top-down as opposed to bottom-up information. The difference between top-down and bottom-up processing is commonly used in experimental psychology. Top-down processing proposes that we form our observations starting with a bigger objective, thought, or knowledge before working our way in the direction of more thorough information. Bottom-up processing, also identified as "small chunk" processing, proposes that we attend to or identify essentials by beginning with the slighter, finer specifics of that component and then move upward until we have a firm illustration of it in our minds. Top-down processing is also identified as conceptually-driven processing, because your observations are swayed by anticipations, beliefs, and perceptions. Sometimes people are mindful of these encouragements, but in other cases this procedure happens without mindful cognizance. Top-down processing can be useful when we are searching for similarities in our environment, but it can also obstruct our capability to recognize things in diverse ways. Our prejudice toward observing things in a particular way is recognized as a perceptual set. A good example of top-down processing is the sentence that is traveling around...

...do you agree with the view ‘that women do not possess innate maternal desires’? Compare and contrast the presentation of motherhood in Top Girls with Atwood’s presentation of motherhood in The Handmaid’s Tale It could be argued that women possess innate maternal desires, however some would argue that women are socialised by their environment to be maternal. Churchill’s feminist play ‘Top Girls’ explores the idea of natural maternal instincts through characters such as Joyce and historical figures Lady Nijo and Patient Griselda. ‘Top Girls’ is set during Thatcher’s government and explores the role of motherhood, with an all female cast Churchill uses theatre of alienation and characterisation to constantly keep the audience aware that the play is not realistic, this technique is done purposely so the audience focus less on the plot and more on the political and social issues. Similar to the play, feminist author Atwood explores ideas of motherhood and how women treat each other within society through her cautionary tale; The Handmaid’s Tale, the fictive autobiographic novel presents characters such as Offred, Ofwarren and Serena Joy who all share problems with maternal identity. Most of the women presented in the texts have a desire to be a mother yet the societies they live within prevent them from successfully realising this desire. Top Girls is set in 1979 at the end of the decade and the beginning of Thatcher’s tenure. Marlene is representative of all of Thatcher’s...

...Mountain Top There is a place in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that had crystal clear lakes and a breath taking view. As you drive up you pass through a scenic view of Joshua tree national forest, which is not much of a forest. The trees that live there are spread out around the desert and look like a hairy cactus with two or more branches on them. As the desert gives way to mountainous terrain you get a sense of how small you really are compared to the great mountains range. While driving along you come across vast winding streams that pour into great lakes like Lake Mono which has a high level of salinity, it is nestled in the crater of an old volcano which has a small island in the middle which is the volcanic cone. In the winter time the snow is pure white and the air is crisp, the water from the streams comes from the lakes are above an elevation of 9,000 feet which makes it cool and clean. Just half way up the mountains you come across a very pristine view of hot springs, the bubbling mud and water gives off a pungent odor of sulfur and rotten eggs, the water that passes through this area is crystal clear from boiling the water as it passes. These places are the most remote areas that I like to travel to this place lets me get a good view of nature and a sense of peace. When its winter and the snow has fallen the ski season opens and the lakes freeze over, giving way to a winter wonderland great for a hot chocolate and getting cozy with your family or...

...Wicked Problem The team gathered around this theme agrees in one thing – “Race to the top”, as a topic, is both inspiring and challenging from day one. But what is behind the fancy title is actually a major economic-political issue which can be observed from many angles (not only the two major ones that would be presumed). Even the final sentence of the wicked problem was a result of couple-of-hours discussion and rephrasing. Special and sensitive challenge - is the fact that we don’t have any member in the group that, based on its cultural background, deeply understands way of thinking and can go into the head of the people which problem we are trying to resolve. That’s why understanding goals and barriers of this Far East country is especially difficult, not only for us, but for the most of businessmen around the world. First part of our research will be focused exactly to these issues. So, let’s get to the point. Globally, what does China want and what problems is it facing? We will start with the presumed assumption that China wants to beat USA and become worlds leading economy. But first, we must emphasize that Chinese government never actually said these words. The biggest reason for that is the fact that China obviously doesn’t want to accept responsibilities which they will automatically undertake from USA if they become world’s leading economy. These responsibilities include the role of world policeman and the role of being the trigger for major changes in the...

The main character is the detective Robin Griffin, who is played by the famous actor Elisabeth Moss. In my analysis I will interpret the first episode of the crime series Top of the Lake. Top of the Lake is about detective Robin Griffin, who is visiting from Sydney, Australia, to New Zealand for two to three weeks. One day she gets a phone call, and needs to investigate the pregnancy of the 12 years old Tui. Robin is a determined woman, who knows how to handle a case like this since she is a specialist in abuse. She devotes herself to her work, and often she has no time for her family. Matt Mitcham is portrayed as a culprit, because he treats other people terrible. He is the father of Tui, and he is a very angry person, who cannot tolerate if things don’t go his way. He wants to be in control of the whole lake area. He has two sons who help him try to control the area. But it is hard for him, after Bob Platt sold Paradise to some women. ...This paper will address two examples for music, art, architecture, philosophy, and literature for the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Each item will show the impact it had on the society today. ART Enlightenment Period Jean-Pierre Houel’s picture The Taking of the Bastille showed a great historic event. The painting showed the Bastille, which was symbolic of France’s royal authority figure, destroyed in the French Revolution. It conveyed the emotion and importance of that particular event. The painting, Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson, created by Jean-Marc Nattier was important piece of art. The painting was indicative of the Enlightenment school of thought because it showed a scholarly, well-dressed man reading a book. Romantic Age Joseph M Turner’s The Chancel and Crossing of Tintern abbey, looking toward the East Window was inspired to paint the Tintern Abbey after visiting the site. The abbey was popular to many Romantics. It inspired the famous poem Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tinten Abbey. The painting itself show the smallness of man, wilderness of nature, and unstoppable power that reclaimed The Tinten Abbey’s edifice. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, by Caspar David Friedrich was a quintessential Romantic painting. It displayed infinite potential and possibility of man and the mysterious grandeur of nature. The painting also...

...Maintenance and Packing. Symptoms Customers Complaints The first observable sign that something has gone wrong is that there are complaints from customers about the looks and packaging of the finished products. It has also been reported that customers have stopped buying from Treetop and have moved on to the competitors. Westboard Co, the marketing agency hired to promote Treetop and their products, encourages and sponsors monthly packaging quality awards. Ratings are based on how the lumber is piled, where the bands and dunnage are placed, how neatly the stencil and seal are applied, the stencil’s accuracy and how neatly and tightly the plastic wrap is attached. During the first few years, Treetop received top quality awards and in the months that they did not win top awards, high ratings were received. In the last few years ratings have slowly declined. Decrease in Productivity Treetop has set up their departments to have a crew in each of the six departments with only 5 supervisors to oversee them. They have chosen not to have a supervisor in the packing department, instead the Planning Supervisor oversees the Packing department on the morning shift and Sawmill...
