...Edwardian Era The time period of the Edwardian Era in England was a period of sexual politics, mindless triviality, tensions between social security and individual freedom and wavering belief in God and religion. The Edwardian age is sometimes called the "golden age" where extravagant parties and high fashion are all everyone cares about. First impressions and formalities are so important; they matter more than freedom of speech and expression. Women have many restrictions placed upon them. Duty is more important than love. People who are unique or different are to be shunned by society. These are the rules of the early modern era in which Forster wrote his novel, A Room with a View. The issues of class snobbery and a too formal and strict society play a large part in Forster’s, A Room with a View indicating it was written in the Edwardian Age. The upper-middle class is the dominant class of society in England. These people are the tourists that fill the British pensions in Italy. They valued coherence to the rules set by society and would not accept anyone different who did not value or follow the rules. Another big part of normal society knows how to act accordingly under the circumstances. A young lady must always have control over emotions and maintain good composure. Mr. Emerson does not believe intact. He has not taught his son George the formalities of social gatherings or how to be chivalrous. George does what his heart tells him. So when Lucy suddenly falls in...

...In the film Juno, directed by Jason Reitman, a character than I admired is Vanessa Loring. Vanessa is a successful career woman in her early 30s who is desperate to be a mother. She is a perfectionist who initially comes across as uptight and controlling but later we learn that she is just nervous about the baby adoption falling through and is struggling to keep her marriage together. Vanessa shows a genuine love for children and a great devotion to being a mother. However her husband, Mark Loring, is struggling to grow up and is not ready to become a father. Film techniques used in the film to make us admire Vanessa are camera work, costume and dialogue. These techniques show us that she is the only mature and realistic adult in her marriage, her realisation that she does not need the “perfect family” to be happy and her natural mothering skills and genuine love of children. Dialogue is a verbal feature used in Juno to make us admire Vanessa. Initially we see Vanessa as cold and controlling, but as the film goes on we begin to realise that she is the only grown-up in her marriage and is having to deal with a husband who refuses to grow up. Vanessa shows great patience when she says, “Hate to interrupt the jam session.” This is how Vanessa responds to Mark after catching him and Juno playing with his guitars when they are supposed to be discussing the adoption. The adoption is a huge deal and Vanessa manages to turn a blind eye to Mark’s insensitivity, showing she is mature...

...convicts just had to get rid of the cousin and nephew no matter what the costs. The characters within this production are witty, ebullient and entertaining. The three convicts, played by Austin Blackburn, Trevor Miles and Emanuel Clark, gave each role their own personal touch. Austin Blackburn playing Joseph, shows the audience that he is content even though he strangled his wife. Trevor Miles, playing Jules, was an accountant before being convicted of theft and tends to be more sensible. Emanuel Clark, playing Alfred, is a romantic fellow who somewhat falls for Marie Louise and shows to be quite hilarious. Matthew plays Felix Ducotel, the distressed but yet calm husband to Emilie Ducotel. She is played by Rebecca Rouse and seems to be uptight and rigid about the situations. Their daughter, Marie Louise Ducotel is played by...

...verbal mode to be most difficult source of communication. The most complications with words is that we can sometime attach them to different experimental and emotional connotations. Words are not always associated through the listener nor the speaker’s similar experiences or similar feelings. Some more examples of verbal mode would be the following: jargon, the use of clichés, and the use of specialized vocabularies. Verbal Activities There are suggested activities for exploring verbal mode, and they are: participants who form a trio and talk for three or four minutes using various clichés that can be remembered. Afterward, each trio is instructed to attempt to come to some agreement on definition of several words, and they are: “uptight”. "heavy”, “straight.” Members of the trios are encouraged as a third activity to try to express verbally experiencing the highs and lows of one another’s feelings. Nonverbal Communication Numerous psychologists were a part of the human-potential movement and had turned toward the attention to the nonverbal ways in which we share meaning with one another. Kinesis is the science of nonverbal communication. Some examples of...

...Now that I have been working their for about 5 years now, I have grown as a person. I am more outgoing and have made great connections with others that work their as well. A typical work day in the visiting clubhouse is pretty lackluster if you are not the bat boy for that given series for obvious reason, because we do not get to go out on the field and watch the game. Once we clock in, we immediately go out to the visiting bullpen and provide the team with gum, towels, seeds, and coffee. After all that is completed, we begin setting up the dugout for team's batting practice session. We have to fill coolers with water and Gatorade to quench their thirst. Then again, we have to provide the team with towels, gum, and seeds. We have a uptight supervisor, so we make sure that everything is perfect, when he comes down to check that we done our jobs correctly. These duties take about 30 minutes each, so we have a lot of down time on our hands because we arrive at the stadium usually at 3:00 p.m. The game usually begins at 7:00 p.m. so that...

...The main theme in the movie was based on the dangers of censorship. I think that the movie is honest in a very crude way. I think that the film is extremely honest because the film invades your mind with ideas and opinions that are not normally spoken about in society. The film leaves open the opinion that parents are not taking the responsibility for the actions of their children and trying to find blame in things such as the media. This was shown in the musical number Blame Canada, “We must blame them and cause a fuss/ before somebody thinks of blaming us” (Shaiman, Parker). Another theme throughout the movie was the ability to use scapegoats in everyday life. Much of the film's satire and many of the songs are concentrated with the refusal...

...Intro: Schools send young girls home and tell them they are creating a commotion to other students by just wearing clothes that are comfortable. Is having a distraction free school more important than these girls’ education? I think not. Schools should have dress codes that keep student from showing up in bikinis and towels, not from being comfortable in their own bodies. Dress codes in schools are outrageous these days and should be dialed down a bit. One way kids express their self is how they dress. That’s almost impossible to do that nowadays with school uniforms and dress codes. Students aren’t even allowed to be themselves without any obstacles. Sometimes schools could have a uniform. Most likely they will include pants for males and...

...the sight of people in the audience spitting on the bride. Another example might be when Ian mentioned to Toula’s Aunt that he was a vegetarian and she insisted that lamb was not considered meat. In the film we see also many instances of misunderstandings that arise due to the differences in culture. For example, when Ian met Toula’s father for the first time, Toula’s father took it as an insult that Ian did not ask permission before attempting to date his daughter. Due to Ian’s ignorance of nurturing culture like Greek culture, Ian unintentionally angered Toula’s father by his actions. Another example is when Ian’s parents meet Toula’s family for the first time. Ian’s parents also unintentionally upset Toula’s father by acting too uptight. Greek culture is classified as a collectivistic culture, so it easy to see how acting fairly reserved could come across as distasteful. Despite all the significant differences between the two families culture, in the end they were able to happily coexist and learn from eachother. The Miller family learnt how to loosen up and be more accepting of other cultures, while the Portokalos’ learnt that being different isn’t necessary a bad...

...In the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, the use of diction, imagery, and syntax convey the speaker's negative attitude towards being forced to act in an uptight, "civilized" manner at all times so as to be a successful adult and role model for children. The choice to use words such as "gobble", "hoard", and "slippers" give the poem a whimsical tone that characterizes the narrator as someone who appreciates being able to laugh at life and do what they enjoy. The narrator wishes to be able to do things like "gobble" samples when out shopping and wear "terrible shirts" and not take life so seriously. They want to rid themselves of the "sobriety of my youth" and live the end of life to the fullest. Throughout this poem, several lines begin with...

Not only was it controversial, but it gave great insight as to exactly how a presidential race can be ran and lost as well. The Presidential election of 2000 sets itself apart from any other election because of the controversy surrounding the outcome. Even though Al Gore won the election based on popular vote, George Bush came out on top with winning the electoral vote over Gore, 271 to Gore’s 266. Although both sides fought a good fight, only one came out on top, the Bush campaign. Many were left wondering exactly why Vice President Al Gore lost. Research shows that the reasons as to why Vice President Al Gore lost the presidential election of 2000 to presidential candidate George W. Bush are due to, the inability to During the beginning of the 2000 campaign almost everyone believed that the outcome and win of the election was to lay rest with Vice President Al Gore. Having being Vice President during the successful Clinton administration in the 1990’s, analysts believed that a win was almost inevitable. According to the readings in Pomper, the question was not if Gore was going to win but by how much. The United States at that time had been used to a period of prosperity and had been living in an economy that was doing quite well. The only problem was that people were not entirely convinced...

...Social Injustice is a term that can be difficult to define, and may depend on the perspective of the group of people. To some, Discrimination is believed to be an example of social injustice. Discrimination is treating someone differently based on the color of their skin, gender, or sexuality. Discrimination can be perceived differently by different groups. A recent poll taken by the NPR, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation asked Americans of different races various questions about discrimination. “White Americans are among those who feel their group is discriminated against with 55 percent saying discrimination exists against whites in the U.S. today.” (Neel, 2017) African Americans were also surveyed and asked questions about the places that discrimination might happen. Fifty percent of all African Americans reported that they have experienced discrimination with police. Nineteen percent stated that they have experienced discrimination when “trying to vote or participate in politics”.
