...This year has been very eventful and challenging. I learned so many things this year about my education or just life in general. There are things that happened this year I want to repeat and then there are things I never want to remember. I think I improved a lot from 6th grade to 8th. In 6th grade I was terrified 11 year old about to start a new school and I didn’t know how I would get through it. Now I’m a 14 year old 8th grader, nearly in high school, I learned to not be afraid of everything new thing that comes along. I learned that I have to accept it and if I don’t like I have to speak up about it. I think I have always been a little too mature for my age. I just look at the other immature people I have to sit in class with every day and think “I don’t want to be like them and what their about.” I think I...

...Coming from a low income family and growing in an agricultural world, I learned how to be independent by making my own resources and raising my own crops. My mother, my siblings and I still lived in Mexico while my father would travel to the United states(U.S.) back and forth bringing money. I thought I would always live in an agricultural world, but then one day my father came back from the United States with two game systems, Nintendo 64 and the Sega. Having that experience of what technology can do, I was inspired to try and learn it. My town’s school only had school up to grade sixth, but most people would quit school and start working by that time. My dream of learning the ins and out of technology was drifting away from my grasp. In...

...I am Samuel Sesena and my life is not as interesting or eventful as the lives of other students, but I would still like to believe I have depth. From my birth to this exact moment, my life has been steady and no real extraordinary good or bad things have happened to me. Nonetheless, It is important for whoever may read this to have a better understanding of me as a person because I too have experienced life. I have had aspirations, overcome countless obstacles as well as let countless obstacles overcome me, and have had a fair amount of success with my academics which I intend to keep consistent. Seeing that school has remained an integral part of my life, it is only fitting that I discuss is. It is difficult for me recall my early life but...

...grade, where I was still figuring out how things worked, or seventh grade where I was finding out who I wanted to be. In eighth grade I knew how things worked, I basically knew who I was, but everything was still so small. I’m still in middle school, nothing really matters a whole lot, I’m just barely a teenager. At first, I viewed that as a negative thing. At first, failure was such a terrible thought, it was scary how easily everything could be messed up, especially in the beginning of the year. I had this new beginning, and it felt so fragile, I wanted to finish middle school the right way. I was worried I would mess it up but, I wanted things to feel important. Throughout eighth grade I learned how to embrace the things that don’t matter. I thought I was ready for things to matter but I still cowered at the thought. I also, hadn’t yet learned how to fail, and that it was okay to just not know. All the lessons I learned this year are pretty accurately displayed through the long “Maybe IDK” sung by Jon Bellion. Towards the end of eighth grade is when I really learned this lesson. I...

...education of any Family and Consumer Sciences major. I interned at James T. Davis Paint and Design center as an assistant to the interior designers. Personally, my internship was a highly positive and allowed me to grow as an interior designer and a person. As I reflect back on what I learned my internship has helped me as I searched for a job and began job training. I am so glad I had the opportunity intern and wish I had done more than one internship, whether official or not. Section One Skills Learned and Practiced I learned and practiced many skills during my internship. The first type of skill utilized during my internship was...

...family unit that I was raised with. However, I do recall that watching how others around me socialized and interacted taught me that there were other ways of living and loving and I was determined to learn them. From an early age, I learned in bible school to treat people the way I wanted them to treat me, ie. The Golden Rule. I also learned that regardless of how I was treated in my home life by my siblings and parental figures, I could CHOOSE to treat others differently. I always knew that the way my father believed he should speak, interact, care for and discipline us was not the right way. As a child, I watched my neighborhood friends interact with their families, and it opened my eyes to how a normal family treats one another. For instance, I recall a certain neighborhood boy who always smelled on the school bus. Other children were so cruel to him; I would listen to them taunt him every day. One day, I stood up and socked one of his bullies in the nose. From that day forward, Wyatt Burkett and I built a friendship based on loyalty and mutual respect. It is surprising that my ability to stand up for my beliefs caused more people to respond to me and become my friend. I learned that you have to stand up for what you know in your heart is the right thing to do and people will respond to that socially. According to Kegan and Lahey’s 3rd level of consciousness, The Socialized Mind was formed in my early years based on my interpersonal environment and also by how I identified more...

...Highlights of my 8th Grade Year Lucabella Beason “I kinda know what you mean. It’s never just what it seems”(Sunshine Khau Dreams and Atwood) Many people describe their 8th grade year as being stressful, and horrible. I wouldn’t disagree with that, but I also think that there more to everything, than what is on the surface. There’s lessons to be learned behind everything that goes wrong, and I think that those lessons help people to become a better person and a harder worker. I would identify my 8th grade year as being stressful, but at the end of it all I’ll look back and think about all of the good memories I made, and all of the lessons I learned that will help ready me for high school, and the real world. Through my 8th grade year especially being on varsity cheer, and getting to go to nationals in Florida, even though it was extremely stressful, I made many good memories. “Fun times come my way I'm takin em. So great when the”...

...What worked? What worked for me, the most was being able to take online college courses. I always wanted to earn a college degree, yet never had the time because of family obligations. When I looked at Ashford University and what it had to offer, it allowed me to be able to, not only take LIB courses online, but also take care of my family at the same time. I had always wanted to do something in the educational field, and now, by taking LIB courses at Ashford, I am continuing towards a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Instructional and Curriculum Design. Doing this never would have happened if it was not for online college. What didn’t work? The only thing that did not work was not having a break in between classes. Taking one course for five weeks, and then having to take the next five-week class right afterward was sometimes difficult to do because I felt “burned out.” Having a one-week break in between classes would give a student a chance to breathe and refresh their...

...experiences. I suppose that is what most typical seventh graders would say. Many days were stressful, many days were fun, and many days were full of learning experiences . Before seventh grade even started, I was pretty stressed out. To be honest, my thoughts were invaded by my older brother Collin who said that the seventh grade would be the worst year of my academic life. Thankfully, it was not all that bad, I survived, and actually had some great experiences and grew intellectually. The only subject I struggled in was English. This was because I started as an atrocious writer. I set a couple of goals at the beginning of my seventh grade year, one of which was to get on the honor roll and the other was to become a better writer. Both goals were achieved. Seventh grade has ended up being so much more than I expected. One of my favorite classes in seventh grade was Academics in Action. In this class we were given some fun assignments like the movie poster assignment and a movie script group project. In this class, Mr. Beard told us about the time that his projector caught fire and it was one of the funniest stories I had ever heard from a teacher. Two other classes that I have truly enjoyed this year are Social Studies and Art. I remember when in the production of our greek drama, my group members and I ran...

...This year, in my English 1302 class, I have learned writing skills that I will utilize for the rest of my college career. Communication through text is a critical skill of modern day society and should rightfully take place as required curricula. I have grown through my efforts as a writer and my increasingly practical knowledge of essay construction, source integration as well as an understanding of the importance of this course. In my post-diagnostic examination, I received 56 out of 74. This was four questions less than my pre-diagnostic examination in which I received 60 out of 74. I feel I have grown as a writer further than just correcting the last minute grammatical and spelling errors in order to complete my final drafts. Instead, I have also blossomed in the skill of communication through my writing. I have learned the required structure of an essay, and how to construct a literature review as well as a researched argument. I still require practice in some areas of grammatical structure, such as comma splicing, as this was a recurring problem and an area of weakness for me. I have learned that a properly formed essay requires an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. In the introduction, the thesis should be clear and is normally located at the end of the introduction. I learned the introduction requires an exigency describing why my topic is significant. In the body paragraphs, topic sentences are crucial. They should point back to the thesis and explain...

...I began high school band in 8th grade. I had played flute for about four years, but it was quite a change for a musician who could barely read rhythms at a 6th grade level. While at first I had thought they would put me with the other flute players because that is what I had known for the last three years, but they did the complete opposite! For the 2014-2015 marching season, I was in Ledford Marching band’s front ensemble. The front ensemble was filled with the most ridiculously talented people. There were people who had played percussion for over eight years, there were people would later go to audition for all-state, and people who marched for national drum corps! I learned many rules my 8th grade year being in the front ensemble. The first thing that I learned was: you’re never alone. Dalton Craven taught me this rule when I was supposed to bring in seven percussion items outside by myself. While you’re...

...than eight years. When I was eight, my mother enrolled me in dancing classes, never realizing it would lead to anything serious. For the first few months, dance was entertainment, something to keep me busy. Although I enjoyed taking classes, I did not become serious until the following year, when my favorite tap teacher told my mother to consider getting me involved in more competitive classes. That was the beginning of my long and successful dancing career, one that has taught me many valuable lessons about the art of dance, and the art of life. Over the years, whether I was living in Buffalo, Atlanta, or Randolph, New Jersey, I learned to adjust as a person, and as a serious dancer. In fact, I found traits I needed to survive and grow as a dancer were also valuable in school and life. Of all the experiences I've had as a dancer, I cherish those moments when I had the opportunity to learn from other dancers. Learning is central to the development of a dancer. In Atlanta, for example, I trained with dancers who studied with the Atlanta Ballet Company as well as those who had trained with famous European dancers, I learned something different from each, even though practices were long and grueling. And yet, although at times I wanted to give up, I sensed that I would be rewarded for my efforts. This pattern repeated itself several times. I would be uprooted and immediately plunged into new and bewildering situations that made adjustment difficult. However, each time I was determined...

...a successful year in 300 chemistry sophomore year, I decided to make the jump and enroll in AP chemistry as my junior year science. The entire first semester of AP chemistry was an uphill battle and was riddled with failures. Any preconceived notions I had about my ability to succeed were seemingly shot down within the first 3 weeks of the class. There were concepts I had never learned and problems I wouldn't have dared touch in my sophomore chemistry class. After a long quarter of struggling, I knew that I needed to make a change. I decided to look at what I was doing wrong in AP chemistry, and what I was doing right in my other classes. As AP chem was the only AP I took junior year, the lens that I looked at it through was much different. I never had expected a class to require so much time after school. I had never experienced poor grades on tests I had studied hours for. Strategies that had worked in the past with other courses were ineffective for this one. Besides the grades, the ideas and thinking strategies I learned after that first quarter resonated throughout my life. Outside of school, I thought more critically about problems to solve, simple and complicated, in everyday life. I found that there are many more ways than one to get from point A to point B....

...child, I wanted to reflect on my childhood and teenage years. I grew up without both of my parents, therefore this was the most important part of my life. The reason these two experiences meant so much to me, because my sister made the decision to raise me. I can reflect back on these two situations that made me the woman I am today. I didn’t allow my life to stop me from receiving my education. My sister was my role model that I looked up too. Even though, my sister is no longer here I am still striving to achieve my education. I learned at an early age the importance of an education. My goal is to instill in my daughter the importance of an education. Microsystem My support came from my sister and this allowed me to go beyond the crying. I can remember in elementary school, I would cry all the time, because I didn’t like going. As a child growing up school was one of my less favorite places. I was a spoiled child by my father, therefore the only person I wanted to be with was him. I did not understand how important school was back then. It was so hard for me to adjust to other children at my school. I did not think about how staying home would affect my learning. Of course, my father tried to persuade me to go to school, but it still took time for me to realize how important getting my education. My father brought me hamburgers and all the food I love eating. One day when I got home from school, my father had a surprise waiting on me. I was so excited, when I went in...
