...Letter to the Editor To the Editor: In response to your article “Organic Foods: All You Need to Know,” I would like to begin by stating that the topic of organic foods versus GMOs is still very controversial. It is a widely known, ongoing debate, but most do not even know all of the information about the two sides. To recap the general information, I will start with some facts. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewage sludge-based fertilizers while GMOs are engineered to make food crops resistant to herbicides and/or to produce an insecticide. For example, most of the sweet corn produced in the U.S. is genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicide...

...Organic foods have become very popular through out the United States. There are many different things that make organic food better, but there are bad things about it as well. I will be telling mostly about the good in organic food. Organic must pass a certain standard to be labeled organic. The food must pass a test given by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Crops have to be grown natural meaning not using any pesticides, artificial fertilizers and irradiation. As for animals they must be on an organic farm and eat organically grown food, they also must have space to be freely and not always stuck in a barn. The biggest thing that animals cannot have is antibiotics or synthetic grown hormones. I choose to talk about why organic is the best option because of many different reasons. Even though organic foods cost more money it is still a good option. There is a lot more you have to do with organic foods and that's why it cost more money. The first being labor cost rising because they are not using chemicals the crops need more care and attention. The workers have to spend more time at work doing harder labor, so they are paying more money for labor then conventional farms. The second reason is the demand of organic food has highly increased since 1997. They can't produce organic food as fast as other foods. If they can't produce organic food fast enough then their is a shortage, instead they have to work harder and longer to meet the demands of organic...

...of the Faculty of the Economics and Management. I know you are busy with exams, assignments, portfolios,.. So I would like to thank you all for coming here today. The presentation will not last long. I ask you to stay focused 20 minutes more or less. Oh, and before I forget. Please keep your questions for the end of the presentation so that later we can kick off a discussion all together. So…let’s start. The topic of our presentation is organic food. I suppose that all of you already know what organic foods are. What we would like to show you today is why organic is becoming a trend. I mean... we are not firms trying to sell you products; we are neither dietitians forcing you to eat organic meals. In few words, we are not saying “buy organic because it’s the best!” Let me do a practical example. Imagine you enter in a supermarket because you want to buy some..let’s say..strawberries. You fast realize that there are 2 types of strawberries. They look like identical but the price differs. You may wonder “Why should I pay more for the apparently the same fruit?” Well some people do buy the more expensive one because they have this little green organic label. By the end of this presentation you will understand which mechanisms influence the consumption of organic products. So that, next time you go grocery shopping you will know what’s behind this price difference. To better give you a clear idea of the phenomenon organic food we structured the presentation into 3 main parts....

...Would you invest in the cost of your food today, to better your chances of not getting cancer or needing pain management in the future? Organic food benefits, outweigh the increase in cost of food. Let’s say you came across two peaches in the store. Both peaches were labeled with all the chemicals and pesticides use to grow them and the health effects they may cause long term from eating them. Would you care then, about organic foods versus non organic food? We must educate ourselves and realize that we have to invest in our health, starting now, before it is too late, before the problem arises, it is called preventative maintenance. A nice red apple is a nice red apple, right? Wrong. You see when you enjoy your crisp red apple, if it is not organic you are also enjoying anywhere from 48 to 69 different pesticides and chemicals. Pesticides and chemicals are not the scariest or disgusting concern. According the Center for Food Safety, any food that is not considered USDA Organic is produced with chemically washed sewage sludge. You may not know what sewer sludge is, but in short sewer sludge is everything you flush down the toilet, hospital waste, and even slaughterhouse waste. The sewer sludge is then washed and turned into a fertilized which is then used in non-organic crops. If you were to purchase organic food, you would be free of the added chemicals, pesticides and sewer sludge. Food defined as Organic, by the United States Department of Agriculture or USDA cannot...

...Organic food has become very popular. But navigating the maze of organic food labels, benefits, and claims can be confusing. Is organic food really healthier? Do GMOs and pesticides cause cancer and other diseases? What do all the labels mean? This guide can help you make better choices about which organic foods are healthier for you and better for the environment, and how you can afford to incorporate more organic food into your diet. ------------------------------------------------- What is organic food? Making a commitment to healthy eating is a great start towards a healthier life. Beyond eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and good fats, however, there is the question of food safety, nutrition, and sustainability. How foods are grown or raised can impact both your health and the environment. This brings up the questions: What is the difference between organic foods and conventionally grown foods? Is “organic” always best? Are GMOs safe? What about locally grown foods? What does “organic” mean? The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for products to be labeled as "organic." Organic crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and must remain separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Organic livestock must...

...If you were to turn on your TV, you would most likely be greeted by a commercial telling its viewer to eat healthy. In order to achieve a better lifestyle and become more healthy the advertisement would suggest that its viewers convert their diets to consuming more organic food rather than conventional foods. Then only problem with this is there are no truly hard-hitting facts that can prove one production method of food is significantly superior to the other in promoting overall wellness. In this essay, I am going to explain some of the issues and ideals with organic production, so that you may have a better understanding of the struggle between deciding to eat organic or to continue eating conventionally grown food. Many people do not even know the difference between organic and inorganic food, they only go by what they see on the label of the food they are purchasing. The major difference in farming organic food as opposed to conventional is the limited use of pesticides. Conventional farming relies heavily on pesticides, growth hormone usage, and applying other chemicals that may be potentially harmful to the consumer of the plant or animal meat. The biggest issue with the conventional farming is the use of the pesticide DDT, which has been proven to be the cause of the widespread thinning of bird eggs, and a sudden drop in the bald eagle and peregrine falcon population (Organic Food Exposed). Rather than using pesticides, organic farmers allow plants to produce their own...

New chemicals are used to create and protect different products, and food is constantly being contaminated by any number of substances. Animals are given growth hormones, and the fertilizer used on many farms contains a number of chemicals that can cause damage to the human body if ingested. Food is becoming increasingly more processed, and many things that line the shelves of supermarkets are filled with preservatives, MSG, and additives that can harm your baby. In order to safeguard your baby, you should try to use organic products as much as possible. Organic baby products can be anything...

...land contamination. You can participate in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources. Organic farming can be profitable and organic food appeals to consumers as both a healthy and ethical choice. Beyond money and ethics though, organic farming practices result in numerous environmental benefits. Organic Farming Builds Healthy Soil. To grow healthy food, you must start with healthy soil. If you treat soil with harmful pesticides and chemicals, you may end up with soil that cannot thrive on its own. Natural cultivation practices are far better than chemical soil management. Organic farming helps combat erosion Not only does organic farming build healthy soil, but it helps combat serious soil and land issues, such as erosion. A major study comparing adjoining organic and chemically treated wheat fields showed that the organic field featured eight more inches of topsoil than the chemically treated field and also had only one-third the erosion loss. If you aren't concerned about erosion; you should be. Erosion issues are extremely serious, affecting the land, food supply and humans. However, organic farming practices do help discourage erosion from occurring. Organic Farming Fights the Effects of Global Warming. According to the Rodale Institute, Farming Systems Trial is America’s longest running, side-by-side comparison of conventional and organic agriculture. The trial, running since 1981, has shown that a healthy organic agriculture system...

...wonder that many are looking to organic foods as an option. In Mark Bittman, “Eating Food that’s Better for You, Organic or Not”, he expresses how sales have doubled since the federal government began certifying food as “organic” and how Americans think organic food is safer, healthier, and better for the environment. Bittman believes most “Americans eat so badly that the organic question is a secondary one. It’s not the primary issue in the way Americans eat.” He believes...

...The rise in consumer awareness for natural and organic products, an increased inclination of new product testing and rising disposable incomes have largely contributed to an overwhelming increase in the organic beauty products and cosmetics. However, this does not fully justify as to 1) why the consumers buy organic cosmetics, 2) where do they buy and 3) how they come to the decision to test, buy and continue to buy these products. Perhaps an answer can be found by raising several questions: a) How much is the market for organic cosmetics? b) Where is this market? c )Is it increasing in numbers or decreasing in numbers? d) Do the rising inflation, current depressed economic situation and rapid levels of technological enhancement has an effect on the growth and development of this market for organic cosmetics? e) What lies behind the motivation to buy these products? f) How are the attitudes and behaviour changing towards organic cosmetics? An investigation in to the size of the organic cosmetics market, does not give a clear picture though broad individual countries trends are available (see, Hennessey 2007, Armstrong 2009) and very limited published data for this industry sector. Mathew Hennessey (2007) in the article “Organic Cosmetics Break Out” raises a very vital issue by asking, “Is the makeup counter poised to go green? May be. What's certain is the global cosmetics industry is enjoying an unprecedented boom and the organic market is the next frontier. ” Hennessey wrote...

...Organic Produce is a Choice Organic Produce is a Choice Imagining a world where there are no chemicals used on the food we eat, making them less harmful to the body and better for the environment that this generation wants to be protected for future generations is hard; therefore most people do not even try; however, if the public were more aware of the benefits of organic produce vs. conventionally grown produce, maybe they will want to make an impact on the environment sooner than later; for later could be too late. Though the health benefits are minimal (Baker, Benbrook, Groth, & Benbrook, 2002), the environmental effects can be limitless, and there is nothing better than getting the full flavor of one’s produce while knowing where it came from, how it was processed, and they are getting nutrients from their produce, not chemical residue or wax (“whfoods.org”, 2013.). Just one of these benefits is enough to make one eat organic, so considering them all, the price should be worth it; like the saying you get what you pay for. Would it not be nice eating food that will not only have health benefits, but also taste better while knowing that with each bite taken, it is playing a part in preserving the environment for future generations? Maybe people do not try organic produce for fear of change, lack of availability, it is too “pricey”, or they are just unaware. Even though organic produce is so similar some cannot tell them apart by eye, they really are very different...

...* Making Your Own Organic Shampoo Once you have chosen your castile soap base, you can add your essential and/or fragrance oils to the mixture. Different oils will affect the hair in different ways depending on what you are looking for in a homemade shampoo. For instance if you are looking to control dandruff and to sooth an itchy scalp, then you would add Tea Tree oil and Chamomile to your shampoo base. If you wanted to add extra shine to your hair with a great scent, then you would add Lemongrass and Rosemary. Here are some oil and herb combinations that you can used based on creating a shampoo that begins with 4oz of castile soap for placement in an 8oz bottle. * Dandruff Control: 1/2oz Tea Tree oil and 2 1/2oz strained Chamomile Tea. * Extra Shine: 2 1/2 oz strained Lemongrass Tea and 1/2oz Rosemary oil. * Control Oily Hair: 1/2oz Lavender oil and 2 1/2oz strained Sage tea. * Thicken Hair: 1oz Rosemary oil and 1/2oz strained Nettles. Once you have created your at home organic shampoo, you'll want to store the bottle in a cool and dark area. Because you are creating something using natural and organic ingredients, the product must be used and cannot have an indefinite shelf life as the chemical additive shampoos that are on the market today. * Making Your Own Organic Conditioner To create your own organic conditioner at home there is no need to use a base of castile soap. Along with mixing different ingredients for your personal preferences...
