A good financial advisor puts the client's interest first - understand their need, have an intelligent understanding of their situation, and works hard to achieve what they hope to gain financially in a given time period. He or she must be honest, trustworthy and demonstrates a sense of ownership to the client's business and their finances, as if losses that may be incurred would be a personal loss to them as well. With these values intact in your financial planner, you can rest assured that your net worth is well taken cared of.

There are four major areas by which to gauge how qualified and competent financial advisors are:

1. Credentials - The eligibility of a financial planning professional in the United States is reviewed and affirmed by the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board of Standards Inc. The certification the board issues is the recognized standard of excellence for financial planners. This certification ensures that the financial planner met the CFP Board's requirements in terms if education and experience, and that they adhere and abide by the CFP Code of Ethics. Experience - Look for a financial planner with at least four years experience in the field of professional financial advisory. This length of service and exposure in the financial industry should be enough for your financial planning professional to know how the industry works, established his or her network of contacts and became well-versed in putting the client interest first. Casually check the financial planner's expertise and knowledge in areas where he or she services financial planning: portfolio structuring (individual clients), taxation (small to medium businesses), benefits package (large businesses and corporations) and other related financial issues as it relates to your situation. If possible, get a financial advisor who has successfully worked on a client with a profile or need that is similar to

Although they do a good job of fostering learning, there are a few shortcomings that are being noted by students in all career fields. Statement of Problem The communication seems to break down between students and advisors over time. Upon initial enrollment the student is assigned three important contacts that play an important role in the initial success of the student. The enrollment, financial, and academic advisors do a good job of initially keeping in contact with student. Once the student begins to get in the flow of his/her schedule, the advisors seem to become less and less involved in the students educational experience. This is very different from a traditional university where the student gets to control their academic path. The financial aid advisor rarely keeps the student inline with what is due on their account until it is too late and...

The Changing Role of the Relationship Manager

...The Changing Role of the Relationship Manager The relationship between wealth managers and their clients is not what it used to be. Public opinion of the financial sector, as a whole, has become sharply critical—people are outraged by the inability of the industry. Clients have become far less trusting and increasingly likely to jump to another wealth manager. But the relationship between RMs and their clients has actually changed well before the onset of crisis. Rise of the Product-Push Model before a Crisis At many wealth-management institutions, particularly the larger ones, the continuity of client relationships has— over time—been disrupted by organizational changes and the shuffling of client portfolios among RMs. In some cases, the goal was to bind the client more to the institution than to an individual advisor. In other cases, however, the institution itself simply could not maintain a consistent service model. At the same time, investors became more interested in diversifying their wealth across institutions. And as information about financial products became more accessible, some investors became self-directed. They tended to be less interested in holistic planning and more interested in specific types of support or investment recommendations. The role of the RM has also changed. Since the beginning of the decade, the RM has become less of a confidant and more of a salesperson. This shift was most apparent in the brokerage model, where RMs began providing targeted...

Fairness Opinion

...FAIRNESS OPINIONS IN MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS Anil K. Makhija* The Ohio State University Rajesh P. Narayanan Ohio University April 11, 2007 ____________________________________________________________ __________________ Abstract Fairness opinions provided by investment banks advising on mergers and acquisitions have been criticized for being conflicted in aiding bankers further their goal of completing the deal as opposed to aiding boards (and shareholders) by providing an honest appraisal of deal value. We find empirical support for this criticism. We find that shareholders on both sides of the deal, aware of the conflict of interest facing advisors, rationally discount deals where advisors provide fairness opinions. The reputation of the advisor serves to mitigate this discount, while the contingent nature of advisory fees appears to have no impact. We also find support for allegations that fairness opinions are sought by boards for the legal cover they provide against shareholders unhappy with the deal’s terms.
