...Home-Style Cookies Jane Smith BUS644: Operations Management Professor Ben-Gourion Mestman February 6, 2012 Home-Style Cookies Production Processes The batch processing system begins when orders are received from distributors. Production schedules are based on the orders received. Each day, a list of cookies to be made is given to the person in charge of mixing. The ingredients needed are activated through a master list containing all the ingredients to ensure accuracy. After all ingredients are mixed, the batter is then poured so the cookies can be baked. Once the cookies are finished baking, they are cooled and then placed in the boxes manually by staff who removes the broken or deformed cookies. The boxes are then wrapped, sealed, and labeled automatically. The company has increased productivity by cutting the non-filled individual cookies on a diagonal so more cookies can bake at a time. In addition, automating the ingredients helps cut back on human error when mixing the ingredients. Increasing the length of the ovens made it possible to bake more cookies at one time. This increase in addition with cutting the non-filled cookies on the diagonal, makes it possible to be more productive. When one uses the machine productivity measure, it is evident that the number of units of output divided by the dollar value of output per machine hour is higher increasing the length of the oven. The company is making the right decision...

...Melissa Edwards Home-Style Cookies BUS 644 Operations Management Week 1 Assignment 1 August 21, 2011 Home-Style Cookies The production process for this small town cookie company is called a batch processing system (Stevenson, 2009). The batch processing system is basically used when a moderate volume of goods or services are desired, and it can handle a moderate variety in products or services (Stevenson, 2009). The process begins as soon as the management gets orders form distributers; these orders are then used to schedule the production (Stevenson, 2009). In the beginning of each shift has a list made up of the cookies that will be made that day and then are delivered to the person that is in charge of the mixing (Stevenson, 2009). The person who is in charge of the list and mixing enters the information into the computer, since the master list includes all the ingredients that are needed for the cookies (Stevenson, 2009). After putting the ingredients into the computer, the computer then determines the amount of ingredients that are needed, according to the quantity of the cookies that are being ordered, and relay information to the storage silos that are located outside the plant, where the main ingredients are stored (Stevenson, 2009). The company has two different ways to increase its productivity. The first way is that the diagonal-cut cookies tend to require less space than straight-cut cookies, and the result in a higher level of productivity. In addition...

...1. A batch process is used. A worker checks the master list for ingredients, and enters that information into the computer. The computer determines ingredient quantities, and then automatically orders the ingredients, which are automatically sent to mixing machines. After mixing, the batter is poured into a cutting machine. Individual cookies are then dropped onto a continuous band and transported through an oven. Filled cookies require an extra step. After baking, cookies are cooled on a spiral cooling rack. Cookies are inspected, defectives are removed and the remaining cookies are packaged and labelled. 2. The use of automation in the mixing process resulted in a reduction in waste; cookies are cut on a diagonal; and the company recently increased the length of its ovens (i.e., more cookies can be baked at the same time).3.All companies have a moral obligation to their employees. Small companies with local owners, particularly in a small community, are more likely to be influenced by such considerations than large companies, in large communities, even with local owners, and even less likely to be influenced if owners are distant, or uninvolved in operations. The issue is a difficult one, often without easy solutions. Cost and efficiency may favor layoffs, but ill will and the effects on morale of employees that remain are important considerations. 4. Freshness of cookies, frequent changes of label requirements, and baking to customer order are factors that favor minimal inventories...

...“On Coming Home” – Joan Didion In this essay Joan Didion tried to compare and contrast life in the two separate places and realities she called home; The home of her birth and the home of her marriage which are totally different. Didion’s style is mainly that of storytelling. In her attempt to connect her two lives and show how difficult it was to reconnect to the home of her childhood, Didion takes the reader through a roller coster of rhythms. Note how she omits the use of conjunctions between words or phrases to produce a hurried rhythm, at another instance she over used the conjunction “and” in quick succession making the words feel like they are bouncing off the walls, and quickly returns to standard sentence structure to slow the pace. Didion seems to pay attention to details and dates as she described the content of the cupboard she tried to clean out; a bathing suit she wore when she was seventeen, a letter of rejection, three teacups and the 1954 photograph. Her tone mostly conveyed frustration. Frustration about losing and missing the home of her birth, her family, whose ways she had grown so use to; Frustration about the husband who is very much unlike them, unlike her. Frustration about the decay all around; physical and social. This frustration so real, she even spoke about them in the present tense. Interesting as it was, this essay left me totally exhausted and overwhelmed. How It Feels to Be Colored Me – Zora Neale Hurston What an overwhelming relief and...
