...Exercise Plan Overweight, is the first word I believe is used to describe me when people first see me. Funny, is the first word used by people to describe me after getting to know me and I learned obese is how the professionals classify me and the “funny- fat girl” is how I perceive myself. I am 43 years old, five feet, four inches tall and recently had a full hysterectomy. I am not what would be described as morbidly obese but I am considered obese at 30 pounds over the ideal weight for my age and height according to the standard bmi calculators. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and osteoporosis are some of the health risks associated with being overweight (WebMd, 2011), post- hysterectomy surgery, and my family history. Living a healthy lifestyle through a well-balanced diet and exercise plan will help deter these and other health risks and helps change my own self-perception of who I am and how I am perceived by others. Setting reachable goals will aide in creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The goals I have set for myself include: create a list of priorities with myself as first on the list, increase activity levels in increments of five minutes per-month, create, maintain and execute a well-balanced meal plan each week, lose five pounds a month to lower potential health risks, increase water intake and continue education about nutritional needs at different stages of life. To meet the goals I have set are being done by time management...

...process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues. Nutrition is also the science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans. As well as a good source of nourishment; food. Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? Being without an essential nutrient or not having as part of our regular diet is often linked to specific illnesses and chronic diseases. For example, high blood pressure, brittle bones, and various forms of cancer. 2. What is the connection between nutrition and health? No matter how hard we try to ignore it, this old adage still rings true. “You are what you eat”. Good health is largely dependent on good nutrition, so much so that doctors trace many physical and emotional ailments back to a diet deficient in vitamins and minerals. Food is the primary source for health and nutrition, although vitamins and supplements act as substitutes. Many medicines and drugs designed to improve health contain synthetic replicas of enzymes and chemicals found in nutrient-dense foods. A well-balanced diet that offers consistent health and nutrition is often extolled for encouraging long life, lowering the incidence of disease, and helping sick people recover. In contrast, inadequate nutrition and poor-quality foods can generally cut life span and subject a person to a range of diseases and deformities. The body needs fuel and building-blocks in order to create the energy it needs...

...other living organisms are transformed from one form to another - metabolism and metabolic pathways” (Bellavia, 2013) The focus of Nutrition is on diseases, how to prevent or try to slow down conditions or problems by using a healthy diet. Nutrition also is involved in figuring out how certain diseases, or cancers may be caused by environmental factors, poor diet as with a people with malnutrition, and allergies to food. Nutrition is so important that major food manufactures employ scientists and nutritionists to help them educate and research. | 2. What is the connection between nutrition and health? | Nutrition and health are dependent on one another. Doctors will trace many emotional and physical problems to diet and lack of vitamins and minerals. Our primary source of energy is food with vitamins and supplements as substitutes. Everyone tries to have a well balanced diet to have a long health life, one that decreases the chance of acquiring a disease, or even help us recover when we are sick. In contrast, a sedentary lifestyle and poor chose of foods can cut our life span and set us up for a plethora of diseases and deformities. Our brain depends on carbohydrates, fatty acids, and vitamin B-12 in order to function properly. Our bones depend on calcium, protein, potassium to provide energy to the muscle. A balanced diet will help...

...balance I have reached several critical conclusions. First important thing that I have learned about myself is the fact that I tend to consume products insufficient to number of servings. Thus, regardless of my genuine attempts to eat products of all major food pyramid categories, such as grains (food made of wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, cereal grains), vegetables (dark green, orange, starchy, dry beans and peas, other), fruits (berries, melons, bananas, apples, etc.), dairy products (milk, cheese products, yogurts, milk-based deserts) and meat and beans (meats, poultry, eggs, fish, nuts and seeds ), my daily intake usually remains inadequate. After giving it more thought I have realized that the reason for this is my tendency to divide the categories of pyramid among several intakes. For example, after having eaten something from the vegetable or fruits group I do not consider adding another serving of those to my remaining meals. Some of the product groups, such as, for example, meat, I have been purposefully limiting, aware of it being very rich in fat and hard to digest. This situation is even more complicated by the fact that my choice of products is frequently monotonous, thus, leading to the inadequate daily supply of the listed food groups. Moreover, while undersupplying myself with most categories, I simultaneously tend to have a rather high intake of protein because of my weak understanding of protein-containing foods. So, the results are unsatisfactory; while I attempt...

...The Skinny on Fad Diets Jessica Johnson DeVry University FAD DIETS You had to stay over at work, pick up the kids, taking them to their various activities, running through the drive through for a quick meal, and begin to unwind on the couch. You could have gone for a walk on your lunch break, hit the gym after work, and made a well-balanced meal for all to eat at the dinner table but with deadlines, a demanding job, and a family to raise with an even crazier schedule; by the end of the day you are beat. However, those extra thirty pounds are just sitting there, waiting to be shed. One day, a thought occurs to seek out a solution, naturally this leads to the internet. A quick Google search and you are now being overloaded with a list of diets, pills, and drinks that will completely change your life around. As the schedules of Americans become more and more jam packed, the rate of becoming an unhealthy adult is rising. Currently 69% of Americans are overweight or obese (Jadhav, 2010). ...climbing and technical rock climbing. My goal is to some day climb what is referred to as the Diamond. This route is 1500 feet straight up, and can take two days to climb. Physical conditioning as well as mental and spiritual condition is a big part of the climb. Physically I would need to hike to the base of the rock face, which is sixteen miles of up hill, and then proceed with the climb stopping at nightfall and sleeping on a ledge called Broadway. This is all done carrying a pack that weighs forty to fifty pounds. When the climb begins there is no protection except what my partner and I could carry in. Carefully placing each cam and proceeding to the top. This is an extreme mental game, because if my partner or I fall the only link between surviving and falling to the ground is a rope and the piece of protection placed. Spiritually, I have to be in touch with myself and know that what ever happens, it happens for a reason. Luck does not play a big part of climbing, skill and psychological abilities are the biggest assets on the rock. To start a health plan I feel there needs to be a goal. I have established this and now a date to start. First I need to stop smoking and start an exercise program that fits into my busy life style. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to show how I would train for the adventure I have chosen. January 1, 2002 is the date to stop smoking, no more cigarettes. A work out plan and diet will be implemented along with climbing...

...Brian Curtis Maureen DattiloDVUO ENG135 Sec I | 6/5/2010 | | With all the choices of “ready prepared meals”, fast food, take out, and delivery it is easy to ask the question “Why should I cook my own meals?” While one might think that cooking can only get dinner on the table, one might also be wrong. The foods we eat play a crucial role in how our mind and body operate. Through cooking one can make smarter decisions to fuel the mind and body properly, while eliminating deficiencies that can cause an imbalance in the nutrients that are needed for healthy life. Not only is food a detrimental factor to health, it also has deep roots into our social world. Everyone has a fond memory of home cooked meals shared over the dinner table, or pleasant times with friends enjoying a nice meal. These fond memories help build bonds that create our social life and help make us who we are. By cooking meals and sharing them with the people that are important in life it is easy to see that cooking, besides getting dinner on the table, can benefit not only your physical and mental health but also contributes to your social life. Health benefits One of the most obvious benefits to cooking is a healthier life. Instead of eating already prepared foods that are loaded with additives, cooking allows a person to eat food in its natural state. Starting from natural foods eliminates unwarranted ingredients from being introduced to your diet that can have unwanted side effects. The Food...

...factors associated with obesity. Given the multifaceted nature of the problem, and its severe implications for the future health and well-being of affected children, I believe that the most effective solutions will be achieved through programs that focus on prevention efforts. This thesis begins with a definition of the obesity epidemic, followed by a discussion of research into the multiple causal factors associated with childhood obesity. Particular emphasis is placed on prevention and intervention programs in the school environment, as many of the efforts to address childhood obesity have been school-based. This thesis also concludes the causes of obesity, environmental factors, biological, genetic, and dietary behaviors, the cost of obesity, and so much more. Recent studies and surveys provide clear evidence that children and adolescents are becoming overweight and, more significantly, obese at increasingly younger ages. Statistical evidence demonstrates that obesity has become a true epidemic that needs to be addressed in our country. “Twenty-five percent of the adult population in the United States is obese or approximately 45 million adults. Almost 15 percent of our children and adolescents are overweight or approximately 8 million youth” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2007a, p. 5). My propose...

...The first large-scale machines to take advantage of this transistor technology were early supercomputers, Stretch by IBM (above) and LARC by Sperry-Rand. These computers, both developed for atomic energy laboratories, could handle an enormous amount of data, a capability much in demand by atomic scientists. The machines were costly and tended to be too powerful for the business sector's computing needs, thereby limiting their attractiveness. Second generation computers replaced machine language with assembly language, allowing abbreviated programming codes to replace long, difficult binary codes. Throughout the early 1960's, there were a number of commercially successful second generation computers used in business, universities, and government from companies such as Burroughs, Control Data, Honeywell, IBM, Sperry-Rand, and others. These second generation computers were also of solid state design, and contained transistors in place of vacuum tubes. They also contained all the components we associate with the modern day computer: printers, tape storage, disk storage, memory, operating systems, and stored programs. By 1965, most large business routinely processed financial information using second generation computers. It was the stored program and programming languages that gave computers the flexibility to finally be cost effective and productive for business use. The stored program concept meant that instructions to run a computer for a specific function (known as a program)...

...from, and impact a person’s quest for a healthier lifestyle of living. Becoming spiritually healthy is a unique experience for each individual and cannot be achieved without prayer and faith. Nothing promotes health of body and of soul more than a spirit that is fed directly through prayer. When a person is seeking a healthier life they should ultimately focus on improving all six components of wellness that includes physical, emotional, social, occupational, spiritual, and intellectual. To be completely satisfied in life they must lead a balanced life and the only way to be balanced is to be connected with God and become spiritually healthy and whole. Spiritual Healthy Lifestyle Controlling Stress through the Power of Faith and Prayer Being healthy is an important aspect in everyone’s life. However, many people don’t realize that there is more than just physical health involved in obtaining the optimum level of health (Fleharty, 2009). Many professionals believe that health and wellness actually involves six main components. The six components are physical, emotional, social, occupational, spiritual, and intellectual (Fleharty, 2009). There are numerous reasons and countless research that supports why an individual should stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. But a recent growing body of research shows that abstaining from food intermittently may have physical as well as spiritual benefits — the latest, a study from Utah researchers that found that occasional fasts (defined as extended periods of time in which people generally abstain from all food and drink except for water) may reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Google “fasting for health” and you’ll get more than 7 million hits, ranging from doctors who recommend it in their practices to treat a range of diseases, spas that promise detoxifying food-free vacations, and message board postings from devotees who say that fasting makes them feel clearer mentally and more fit. “I fast whenever my body feels like it needs a reboot,” says Yoli Ouiya, 31, a New York City blogger who writes about eco-friendly living. She fasts once every few months. But is fasting a good idea for your health? Possibly, says David Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University. Every day, organs such as the liver, kidney, and spleen work to remove and neutralize toxins from the body to keep our cells healthy. “When you fast, you eliminate input of additional toxins from food,” says Dr. Katz, “and there is a potential biological benefit to that.” Leading researchers and experts share the details you need to know before you forgo food: Your Body on a Fast Thanks to our history as hunter-gatherers, human bodies...

...I was asked to organize a Life Behavior Plan for myself and turn it at the end of the year. Although this paper may seem to be opposite of what my agenda is suppose to be; it is in fact my approach to a better behavior. For some people a good behavior plan may consist of exercise and physical strengthening. For others maybe a healthier diet is in need. To me a behavior plan is something that helps organize your life or puts light on issues that need to become more balanced. Ultimately a balanced life is the goal of our behavior plans. My Behavior plan is to meditate and get back to doing the one thing that I do best and that is to write. The following paragraphs are part of a daily/weekly ritual I like to call “Words of Wisdom.” They are my thoughts on various aspects of life. These thoughts are brought to me through meditation and some research. The goal of these, “Words of Wisdom” is to focus on areas of unbalance in my life and plan my approach to getting them in balance. The following is my approach and thoughts on self confidence Believing in one’s self is a structured characteristic. Self confidence isn’t obtained easily this is because there are several aspects of one’s life that must be balanced in order for self confidence to be obtained. One can’t just get confidence it is an earned characteristic and must be tried and tested. High ego or cockiness can easily be mistaken for confidence because most people associate lack of fear with being confident. However confidence...
