Nutritional Study Worksheet 1. The topic I choose to discuss is caffeine, particularly in coffee, there have been many studies to determine where it may be of benefit, and where it may cause undesirable effects. Some health benefits of caffeine are reduced risks of Parkinson's disease, a lower risk of developing gallstones, improved mental performance, physical performance, a reduced time of headzches, and improved heart health. Caffeine is full of sugar so for people with diabetes it can cause the disease to be much worse for that person. Caffeine has a negative effect on sleep, you should not drink coffee late at night then try and go to sleep. It can have a negative effect on your bone density, which gets worse with age and maked it that much easier for broken bones. 2. Drinking coffee but, not over doing it can prevent some cardiovascular problems. It always helps with inflammation which of course helps to prevent certain heart related illness. Most people don't realize that coffee is actually good for the body and for our heart's because, coffee contains antioxidants. Coffee can also help burn fat and improve physical performance. The reason you find caffeine in commercial fat burning supplements is due to it's stimulant effect on the central nervous system, both raises metabolism and increases the oxidation of fatty acids. Caffeine can also improve athletic performance by several mechanisms, including by mobilizing fatty acids from the fat tissues. Caffeine was found to increase exercise performance by 11-12 percent on average but, caffeine is also considered a drug and too much can become addictive and you can become dependent. 3. In the one article I think that the authors are trying to say how good caffeine/coffee can help physical performance a little too much. To me I think that coffee/caffeine can be good if you don't over do it but I think in this claim it seems like they are trying to sell the fact that coffee/caffeine has a stimulant in it and helps you lose weight and burn fat. In my other article I do not feel as if the authors are trying to sell anything therefore I do not feel as if there is personal gain. 4. Both articles that I read were peer-reviewed articles. There were several researchers who done several different studies on coffee/caffeine to give the good and bad affects of caffeine/coffee. 5. The information about coffee/caffeine being good for you has been studied but there is new studies that show the same information. The information about coffee/caffeine helping improve physical performance has been studied over and over and has the same results. 6. I'm still unsure how caffeine/coffee can help prevent all these diseases and be good to help you burn fat and things if it's not suppose to be good for you. I have changed my opinion on caffeine/coffee. I think that after reading these articles I'm not going to drink so much caffeine. I understand that good things can happen from drinking some caffeine but I think more bad than good can happen from too much caffeine.
