This means that the process needs to be continuous so that trends, opportunities and threats are identified. There are two different types of market research, primary research and secondary research. Primary research Primary research consists of a collection of original primary data. There are advantages and disadvantages of primary research. There are various forms of primary research, which are: Observations Observations are a method of primary research where companies monitor customer behaviour. This can be in the form of a ‘mystery shopper’ in a store. Experimentation Experimentations are a method of primary research where an element of the marketing mix is changed. The results are then analysed. Surveys Face-to-face surveys; postal surveys; telephone surveys and email surveys are all different types of surveys used as methods of carrying out primary research. ...P1- Describe different types of market research Primary research this involves finding out new information, it helps to find the answers to specific questions for a particular purpose, this could mean taking a direct way for example face- to- face surveys, postal or online questionnaires. This type of direct contact helps makes the information received valuable and gives a specific feedback to the questions asked. Secondary research focuses on existing information. It uses published data that previous research has already discovered; this could cover a wide range of materials such as statistics, market research reports and sales figures. There are two main approaches to 'primary' market research: * Quantitative research: collecting information from a broad population sample e.g. by conducting extensive surveys, used when Coca Cola GB wants to gauge appeal across a wide audience * Qualitative research: working with small 'focus' groups. This involves far more detailed investigations, e.g. gathering a small group of 'typical' consumers to taste test products or to talk about their preferences and experiences of using different products. Qualitative research, whilst not representative of the views of the general population, provides greater insight into 'why' people think what they think. P2- Explain how different market research methods have been used to make a marketing decision within a selected situation or business. Coca cola divide their market category’s into...
