...Throughout this course, my ability as a writer has significantly improved. As a result, I have acquired new skills that will help me in life. My confidence has increased about college level writing. When I started this class I did not know how to write a proper essay, in fact, I did not even know where to start. To begin with, each chapter has taught me a new valuable skill. As I wrote each journal entry I noticed that my skills were improving. In particular, the tools I have benefitted from the most are prewriting, planning, and proofreading. Regardless of the fact that I have learned important core writing skills I still have a lot of room for improvement. The first reason is the step of prewriting. Although there are several various methods of prewriting I have found that freewriting is the most effective technique for me. It is extremely helpful in provoking my thoughts on to paper because it allows my ideas that are in the back of my mind to come to the surface. Since there are no constraints in free writing it enables me to produce creativity....

...have learned a lot of things during this week’s course that I did not know before and that I found interesting in this class. My current method of completing a first draft is a simple one and that is to get as many ideas down on paper as quickly as I can. After reading this week’s chapters and previous weeks chapters, I have found that the best way to start is to ask who or what is going to be my intended audience. The goal of a first draft is to capture my ideas on paper and produce a rough version of the final essay. (Connelly, M. 2007). There are several strategies that I have learned for writing a first draft. Such as: review my plan, focus on my goal, write to my reader, visualize the completed document, support my thesis. Amend my plan if needed, and start to write. I also found proofreading and editing interesting in this week’s course. Proofreading is about searching your writing for errors, both grammatical and typos, before submitting my paper for an audience. Editing and proofreading are writing processes different from revising. Editing can involve extensive rewriting of sentences, but it usually focuses on sentences or even smaller elements of the text. Proofreading is the very last step writers go through to be sure that the text is presentable. there are many proofreading strategies such as: start with the problem areas, read from the end to the beginning, look for typos. Editing strategies may...

...Cory Joyce Mrs. Lapp, English 12 Preliminary Writing Assignment 31 August 2012 My writing skills have many positives and negatives, the positives would be I am good at research; I am also good at proofreading, revising, and editing. Even though my writing has some good quality to it, it also has some very bad areas that need major improvement in, such as hand writing, my hand writing has been bad ever sense I have been in school and it never seems to get better. Some other negative things about my writing skills are my introductions and conclusions, as well as my paragraphs with unity and coherence. My writing goals while being in English 12 this year is to become a better writer in all areas especially the ones that need major improvement. There are many writing skills that I have confidence that I am good at and that I show it in my writing, such as research, I always organize my research accordingly to how the essay is being written so I find what I need efficiently and then move on the next part of the essay, I also know how to incorporate research material into the topic well so it mixes and the reader doesn’t feel that I am talking about a completely different subject. Another thing I am also good at is proofreading, I can proofread any kind of written work that needs proofread and can find what needs changed. I also do well with revising and editing, after proofreading a piece of work I can revise and change or edit what was wrong or should have been changed...

...Editing and proofreading are very important components of the process of checking my work before submission. After I finish my first draft, I started editing process. I reread my draft to see, for instance, whether my paper is well organized, the transitions between paragraphs are smooth, and my evidence actually supports up my argument. Next, I checked for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. I try to keep the editing and proofreading processes separate. Proofreading is my final stage of the editing process. It is a process of looking for any inconsistencies and grammatical errors as well as style and spelling issues. I am focusing on any inconsistencies, grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. I always approach...

...13 February 2014 Paragraph Assignment 1 Writing with Intent I can improve my writing in the next thirteen weeks by studying vocabulary, practicing reading, and proofreading my work. For example I have a subscription to the Union Tribune Newspaper. I try to read a newspaper article daily. As a result, I am able to keep up with the local news and learn new vocabulary. In fact the dictionary has become my best friend. Using the dictionary to look up words I don’t understand will help me understand the meaning and the flow of the story. I have added many new words to my vocabulary by doing this. Using the new words in my speech and writing, I am able to remember the vocabulary. Additionally to improve my writing, I have established a reading routine schedule. Early in the morning I read a book for thirty minutes. Secondly, I read a magazine or newspaper article in the late evening. My two favorite magazines are Times and National Geographic. They are very challenging magazines. However when I don’t understand the material, I will reread until I comprehend. Also reading a book or a magazine increases my knowledge and makes me smarter. Yet another reason my writing will get better is by proofreading my work. I will do this by using the tutorial service at the Academic Skills Center. Last week, when I walked in the Academic Skills Center for the first time, I was very impressed. And the best part, “it is free!” I plan to take all my English assignments that need to be proofread...

...8 Proofreading Techniques I searched the internet and found several techniques for proofreading your own writing. I have listed and identified eight techniques and mentioned a few here that have helped me in the past. One technique is looking for one type of problem at one given time. Read through your document, focusing on the first sentence for punctuation, then spelling, then word choice, and finally the sentence structuring until the full document is proofread with this technique. The second technique maybe is to recheck for proper names, facts, figures with correct spelling and information is up to date with accuracy. Thirdly, by reading your document out-loud, may bring to show a faulty verb ending of a missing word or addition of word to emphasize a meaning. This fourth technique mentioned would be the most used and best suggested proofreading technique in my repertoire of writing skills. Set aside your work for a few hours (or days) after you’ve finished compiling your document, then come back to it later with fresher eyes and reread the whole document over again. You may decide to tweak a few words or sentences to give the final work an awe effect for your audience, the experience factor. Sometimes, I prefer to print out a hard copy and review the document, this fifth proofreading technique may show some inconsistencies by looking it over line by line. This sixth technique mentioned may demonstrate that the writer can reformat their work and by rereading the document...

...includes revising, editing, and proofreading. In order to achieve this: there mustn't be errors that obstruct the comprehension of the work, the changes made must address critiques from instructor and peers and the writing must clear and intentional on multiple levels. This is paramount to a paper's overall efficacy as it creates a work that is understandable and clear to the reader. These types of requirements can be seen in almost any project that is adequate. Nearly all works must display fluency and responses to constructive criticism. For this, I chose SA 2.3. In this assignment one was required to annotate and cite three separate sources as well as describe a community, one of its problems and provide a possible solution....

...for Excellence in Writing) Today I sat down with Becky, one of the writing consultant, talking about what she normally do to help people in their writing and her goal. After the conversation, I have learned three important lessons which will benefit me in my future. First, having an obvious statement is important in writing. According to Becky, she meets both undergraduate and graduate students on a daily basis who needs help editing and improving their writing skills. For instance, Becky helps those people how to organize ideas, convey clear thoughts, brainstorming, and fix sentence structures which would look more appealing. Second, proofreading is also very essential to be a good writer. Becky faced problems with students for not proofreading their work properly. For example, she noticed some people who didn’t use proper grammar in their writing, never say new things but repeatedly using too much vocabularies, and did not do thorough work analysis. Becky adds that most people just wanted their writing to be as beautiful as possible. Unlike other students, Becky’s main goal is to make sure people don’t use many big words and make the writing as simple as possible. In other words, she emphasized the importance of “clarity” in writing. I also think maintaining the structure of both clarity and simplicity is important for students who need to improve their writing. Lastly, being confident in yourself is necessary when writing an assignment, not...

...As I entered college as a first-year undergraduate student it was overwhelming, yet an amazing experience. It was difficult for me to adjust to a new environment at the beginning, but as my first year comes to an end I was able to meet various of people, connect with my professors, and find who I am as a person. With these memorable events that have happened in my first year, I also admired all the classes I have taken so far. More specifically, Stretch English which is my first-year English course at San Jose State University. This year-long English course allowed me to witness my strengths and weaknesses as a reader and writer. ...Writing a paper either individually or in a group, there are many things to consider other than just the writing itself. Selecting a topic to write about is different by yourself as opposed to a group. When writing alone, you don't have anyone else to contend with, so the choices are easier to make. However, you may not have as many options as you would working in a group, many people working together will come up with a much larger range of topics. Either way has its benefits as well as its problems. Having more topics to pick from will give any paper a much richer material base to pool from, but at the same time having to deal with many people means that things may not always go smoothly, as some members of the group may not see eye to eye on every topic. On the other side of that, one person writing a paper will have fewer problems picking a topic, but at the same time will not have as many to choose from as someone working in a group. One thing both ways of writing a paper have in common is that you still have to pick one subject to work with, regardless of how many people are working on the paper. And depending on the subject that you have to work with, a group or individual may come to the same conclusion in a short amount of time. When writing in a group, it can be more difficult to edit work as more than one person is writing it. When you write by yourself, the revisions can be a bit easier as you can have a better vision of the finished product as well as the fact that...

... Reflection essay Writing has not always been my strongest subject in school; in fact it has always been my weakest just because I had always struggled with grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc. I have always end up with bad grades in whatever writing classes I took. But as the semester is coming to an end I can honestly say I have learned and improved on a lot as both a writer and a student. One skill I believe I have improved on is the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. Another skill I have improved on is sentence punctuation strategies: run-ons, comma splices, fragments and comma usage issues. Reading and study of professional essay was one of the skills I learned during the semester. Lastly I had learned how to demonstrate my abilities as a developing writer by: attending class regularly, prepared and on time, and participating actively. The first skill I learned and improved on a lot this semester was the writing process and what it came with such as prewriting, drafting, revising editing, and proofreading. I especially improved on this skill when I wrote my narrative essay. For example I had to write three drafts, first, second and then the finally draft. The first draft was me prewriting and getting all my ideals down. For my second draft I had to go for peer review and get outside help so I can know what to change and how to revise my paper. I had to go for private conference with the...

...being a fairly new college student going into my second semester of college and taking my second English class. I had many different thoughts going through my mind of what to expect. I was apprehensive, but I was ready to take on the challenge. I knew that I needed to strengthen my English skills, and was hoping this class would help. It is okay if you are feeling nervous and scared, it’s normal. College is a very scary thing, especially if you feel you are not prepared for the courses. I feel as if English is one of my worst subjects because I have trouble comprehending and writing grammatically correct. I feel as if my high school English classes may have not prepared me enough for college. College English classes are not extremely hard if you stay on top of your work at all times. I did not have trouble writing my essays; however, I did have trouble when it came to proofreading my work. Now that I have successfully completed English 101 and 102 I feel that I have learned how to improve my writing skills, research skills, and I feel confident in any future writings....

...Writing Review Throughout this English 111 course, I have learned tremendous amounts of information and skills that I will carry with me and use throughout the remainder of my life. This class has helped me to not only become a better writer but also to become an active reader too. Needless to say, I have attempted this class in the past, this is the second time I have taken this course, and I must say I am glad that I did. Since then, I have learned and remember more from this semester than before such as the importance of pre-writing; choosing a topic and developing a thesis; how editing and revising can help construct an A paper. Unfortunately, I haven’t done any other writing this semester other than this class because this is the only...

...Scientific paper is an effective medium to update professionals in any career regarding new research discoveries. An effective paper is clear, simple, and accurate. It does not portray any bias or subjectivity towards information being presented. Being correct grammatically and written flawlessly are additional characteristics of a compelling professional paper. Another important aspect is proofreading. Proofreading several drafts allows any necessary changes need to be made in a paper for it to be efficient. It should be free of unnecessary details by providing only topic related information from introduction to results. Clear language, without irrelevant jargon, in a paper allows reader to follow information easily and to understand...

...communion between the church and the parishioners. It was also an important way to present the church to new visitors. That is why making the bulletin required several steps that were necessary to help me along the composing process. My writing process started by gathering all letters, memos, announcements, and scheduled appointments for that week. By doing so I gathered information that I would later use to compose my work. I discussed with the pastor and wrote down everything he wanted to make reference to in the bulletin. These notes usually gave me a foundation to know how and where I should begin. The bulletin was done in a chronological order. This made it easier for me to organize my topics and themes according to upcoming events. Each topic was covered briefly and in simple paragraphs. On the back of the bulletin I provided a full page of Reflection. My writings varied depending on the season and feasts of the church and often included a scripture. This was a way that would prepare the parishioners and help them enter that special time. Considering my audience my tone was friendly and interactive. Generally, I had to do my own research on the scriptures and based on my own sincerity and knowledge I would compose my work. By editing my work I would become aware of changes...
