The Green Mile
The Green Mile is based on the novel by Stephen King the film was released in 1999. The setting for this movie takes place during the Great Depression in a state prison on the death row. This movie is tells the story of friendship. The key people in a movies design team are the directors, production designer, and cinematographer. Each person in the design team brings different parts to the film allowing the film to come together in end. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) It all starts with the director of the movie who looks over the script and then creates a vision for the film (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). The director of The Green Mile is Frank Darabont. The movie is centered on the five prison guards that work the death row or Green Mile. Darabont’s vision for this movie was to bring to life the Novel that was written by Stephen King. The movie was based on capital punishment but it also shows the compassion, humanity, dignity and faith of the officers have for those who are on death row. Once the director has created the vision the film it is the production designer’s job to come up with the landscaping, scenery, and props for the film (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). The production designer for The Green Mile was Terence Marsh. Marsh created an eight cell death row. There isn't a single interior in this movie, with the minor exception of the warden's office, that wasn't designed and built from scratch, every nut, bolt and frayed electrical cord, and there wasn’t a single exterior location that wasn't substantially reinvented for purposes of filming. Marsh chose an old Tennessee State Penitentiary which has been used in other films he said that this gave the atmosphere and sense of history and mystery. (The Green Mile Production Notes, 1999) Once the director and the production designer have done their part in putting the director’s vision in to play, the cinematographer goes to work at putting the movie in motion. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) The cinematographer job is to figure out the lighting of the mood, the camera angles of the movie, and really making the movie come into motion. This movie had two cinematographers, David Tattersall and Gabriel Beristain. These two used three point lighting and low key lighting to give the film is historic and mysterious feeling.
The lighting throughout the whole movie is very low key and gives you the sense that they are trying to keep a peaceful, stress free area, to unsure that you almost feel a comfort of being there. This film falls in the drama genre. This film is also done in non-liner, because it starts out with Paul telling the story as an old man and the director uses flash back method in retelling the story of The Green Mile.
This movie is all about these inmates on death row. The director chose to show the execution of two inmates and the process of how the electric chair works and the step in order to complete a successful execution. In the first execution they show how they practice in order to make sure that nothing goes wrong. Each guard has a responsibility in the execution. As the movie goes on we see how the friendship between the warden and Paul is played out. The warden wife is diagnosed with a tumor in her brain. We see the friendship between the guards and each other. We are also show the friendship between a man and his pet mouse. We all know that friendship is important to everyone so seeing how each character portrays that friendship. The friendship and thankfulness is shown when Paul wife makes John some cornbread and his shares with Delacroix one of the other inmates. In the special edition DVD the give you the back ground of the movie and how the director picked the actors for each character in the movie. Tom Hanks talks about being asked about being asked to play Paul. Michael Duncan talks about being asked to play John Coffey, they both talk about how the movie is this film is not a typical Stephen King type of movie. The director talks about how he knew which actor he wanted to play Paul right away. During the special features you see how the set come together. (Darabont, 1999) During the special features they talk about the importance of the mouse in the film and how it is the last living encounter that one of the inmate has. Michael Duncan talks making the character come to live. Director talks about how the film draws you into the and takes you along the journey. (Darabont, 1999) The movie opens up in a nursing home and shows Paul played by Tom Hanks having a flash back of people searching for two little girls in a field. Paul starts having a emotional break down and starts telling his friend Elli of being a Prison guard in 1935. Paul starts remembering how things played out in that year on the mile and the story starts to unfold as he explains when John Coffey played my Michael Duncan comes to the mile.
They show the yard and the men working in the field they use wide view of the camera to show the men working. As the truck approaches the mile, the camera shows how the truck is caring a heavy load. The camera closes up of the guard and all you see is the chest of the prisoner showing how big the prisoner is in compassion to the guard. The show a close up of Paul and Bruno another guard.
John Coffey is prorated a gentle man, as the guards talk about John they assume that he is dumb, retarded, and a monster for the crime that he is being accused of committing. The next scene shows the father of the two missing girls with John and the director is using a swiping camera to show the crowed of people that were looking for these girls. When the mob is standing there all you hear from John is “I am Sorry, I am sorry.” The father of the two girls is beating up John. As the movie plays along we learn about John Coffey’s healing power. Paul is suffering from kidney stones and is a lot of pain. Paul is in so much pain that he cannot use the washroom. John sees that Paul is suffering calling him to his cell. John grabs Paul and pulls him close to him. Grabbing his crouch area and as this is happening the other inmate starts screaming for help. Paul is trying to figure out what is happening, but in the back ground the cinematographers chose to have the dramatic music playing in the background and the light bulb in the cell get really really bright and brake. Then up starts to cough something that look like gnat. Again they chose to use soft music in the back ground. Paul asked John “what happen John” replies with “I took it away Boss.” This is when Paul realizes there is no way that John could have killed the two little girls. The guards gather at Paul’s house and he tells them how John helps take away his problem. They talk about talking John to the warden home to help his wife. The officers plan how to get John out of the mile and take him. They get to the wardens home and the wife is having a spell, and John looks the lady in the face and just takes away her tumor. IN the background again the lights get real bright as John is taking away the illness. When everything is all over she thanks John with a hug and tells him thank you. At this point in the movie all the guards know that John is innocent man. The next execution is Delacroix; showing how forgetting one little detail likes the wet sponge can set the execution up for disaster. During Del’s execution the light bulbs are breaking and sending sparks all over. They use screaming from the viewer and guards know that something is wrong. They can’t stop the execution because Del’s not dead.
We also see the personally of the guards and how each character deals with the working on the mile. Three of the guards show some compassion for the inmates and there is one guard who portrayed as hard ass and is mean to the inmates. In the scene where Percy gets scared cause Billy the kid grabbed him he talks his anger out on the inmate that is going up for execution. WE see the compassion of the guards when Paul and Burt are talking to Del about Mr. Jangles and what’s going to happen to him once Del is gone.
End the we see a somber execution they lighting is low, and the soft music is playing in the back ground as Paul gives John his last right and tells him what is going to happen. The camera pans around showing how each officer has tears in their eyes and they are sad to be killing such a kind a innocent man and there is nothing that can be done about it.
This movie is heartfelt story of how someone who is innocent is being put to death all he was trying to do help those who need healing. This movie is all about friendship and compassion.

...The Green Miles is an American drama film directed by Frank Darabont and based on the 1996 Stephen King novel of the same name. The film follows the story of Paul Edgecomb and his life as a prison officer on Death Role during the Great Depression. One day, an African-American prisoner named John Coffey arrives on death role charged for raping and murdering two white young girls. Although John is a gigantic muscular man, he has the mindset of a small child and demonstrates attributes of being developmentally challenged. John often cries, keeps to himself, and fears darkness. When John was brought to his cell, he does not mention his crime, but continually emphasizes that he “tried to take it back, but it was too late”. As the movie progresses, it is revealed that John has extraordinary powers. One day when all the other officers were gone, John asks to speak to Paul. When Paul moves toward John’s cell, John grabs Paul and puts his hand over Paul’s groin. The light suddenly flares brightly, and John lets go coughing and gasping until he releases a cloud of spores from his mouth. Paul demanded to know what happened, but John only say that he helped. When Paul goes to the restroom, he realizes that his urinary infection was cured by John’s act. Later on in the movie, John also resurrects Del’s pet mouse Mr. Jingles, and heals Warden’s terminally ill wife. Review the Green Mile

...The Green Mile is a fantasy film made in 1999, starring Tom Hanks (Paul Edgecomb) and Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey). Edgecomb is a guard working in a prison that is filled with convicted murderers and rapists that are sent to 'The Green Mile' to wait for the day of their execution. The prison is turned upside down when Coffey comes there. He is a huge man that everyone fears, although he would never hurt a fly. He was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit: murder and rape of two young girls. Everyone avoids him because they are scared of him, but they soon realize that he is a very special man who possesses the ability to cure dead and dying people and animals by taking away their sickness and transforming it into his own. He is very simple and kind which we can deduce from his request addressed to Edgecomb: ‘’ Do you leave a light on after bedtime? Because I get a little scared in the dark sometimes. If it's a strange place.'' We immediately realize that he could never hurt anyone, which is exactly the opposite of the first impression we get when we first meet this giant. The choice of actors was done brilliantly; no other actor I can think of would have made such a strong effect on the audience. The film is an adaptation of one of Stephen King’s books and having read some of them, I know that sometimes King’s characters are strange and very hard to come by in real life or mimic, but here the perfect actor was chosen. Also the role of Edgecomb was filled perfectly...

Relationships in Green Mile

...Relationships developed from extremely negative impression in Green Mile “The Green Mile” is a movie that was directed by Frank Darabont and was published in 1999. It was adapted from the novel of the same name, which was written by Stephen Kings. Out of millions of movies out there, this movie is possibly the best one to demonstrate how wrong the first impression can be, and how bonds and relationships can be formed from tremendously negative impression. The two main characters are the head prisoner officer called Paul Edgecomb, and a negro death row inmate under his supervision called John Coffey. Basically, the whole movie is the process of Social Penetration Theory as Paul, and other prison officers, gradually unpeel layers after layers to discover the true wonderful person of John Coffey, who is supposed an extremely dangerous criminal whose existence needed to be get rid of. The first main character is Paul Edgecomb, the head prisoner officer, who is responsible for watching over the death row inmates. He is a cynical and world-weary veteran officer guard who has been through a lot of messed up things in his life. He is also quite a sensitive individual. Paul suffers from a urinary tract infection. The second main character is John Coffey, a huge negro death row inmate, who is supposedly sentence for his crime of raping and murdering of two little girls. However, it was not John who commit such crimes but another inmate, who is ironically put in the same prison...

Stephen King's 'The Green Mile'

...The Green Mile, written by Stephen King, remains a world-renowned novel that was eventually turned into a movie by the director Frank Darabont. The green mile, a term used at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary, happens to be referred to as “the green mile” for the reason that at Cold Mountain there is a long green hallway that leads to where all the executions take place. The novel focuses on the narrator, Paul Edgecomb and his story on why John Coffey, an inmate at Cold Mountain, was the last execution that Paul took part in. The novel did a wonderful job showing just how far you're willing to go for a job, and the injustice of society. Nevertheless, the film measures above and beyond my expectations after reading the novel. The Green Mile,...

Foreshadowing In 'Of Mice And Men And The Green Mile'

...Explain how "Of Mice and Men" and "The Green Mile" use foreshadowing and the effect that it has on the reader and viewer. In the Novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck and the film “The Green Mile” directed by Frank Darabont, foreshadowing is used effectively to keep the reader and viewer intrigued. Both of these texts use similar techniques to foreshadow the fate of the main characters. These include, the exposition of characters, hints and warnings, the use of memories/flashbacks and future events that appear to be unrelated at first. These techniques are used to create tension and anticipation and keep the audience interested. A prime example of the two texts foreshadowing similar events is the deaths of Lennie from “Of Mice and Men” and John Coffey from “The Green Mile”. They both make similar mistakes at the beginning of the stories, and are both sentenced to death, John knowing it was going to happen and Lennie unknowingly. Lennie’s death was foreshadowed by Candy’s dog being put down and taken out of its...

The Green Milee

...The Green Mile Question 1 The Green Mile, directed by Frank Darabont was fundamentally made to show the harm that human beings inflict on others in their society. Its major themes were death, compassion, sacrifice and how these themes link todays society. Green Mile was a term referring to death row in Louisiana State Penintiary, where prisoners were held as they waited for their execution to take place. The movie illustrates the true nature of death penalty, showing how cruel and barbaric it was. One of the main themes in The Green Mile is death; it is a major theme throughout the whole film. This then leaves the viewers to think deeply about their own fate. It is an obvious theme, considering the film takes place on death row. However, further analysis reveals a deeper meaning than men dying in an electric chair for their crimes. And I think about all of us. Walking our own green mile, each in our own time. Paul said. The viewer discovers that The Green Mile itself is a metaphor for death. Paul compared life on the Green Mile to life for a free citizen, because both lifestyles will end in the same way. Death is unavoidable. For the prisoner as they have a set number of days until their execution, so their Green Mile is relatively short. A free citizen is uncertain about the time of their death, some people never even think about it, like they are going to live forever, but when the day of reckoning comes, both the prisoner and the free citizen face the same fate. Life...

Modifications on an Automobile and Its Environmental Effects

...With the increase in oil prices and the negative effects on the environment due to carbon emissions, it is imperative to begin to think about the effects of car maintenance on this issue. Wouldn’t one like to save gas by increasing miles per gallon?  There is a proven connection between a well maintained automobile and improved gas mileage.  This has a direct effect on automobile pollution in regard to carbon emissions.  A well maintained car saves the owner money, increase fuel efficiency and decreases pollution. A well maintained vehicle and its relationship to gas consumption is twofold. One when the car is running at its peak performance. Thus mechanical systems are running at peak efficiency. Two when a car needs service or when modifications can be made to improve efficiency. Projected carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions from cars could remain level at three gigatons through 2050 despite many more personal vehicles on the road with only minor affordable changes to existing engines, chassis and systems, according to a new report. “The study unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, challenges auto-policy makers to push for technology and design changes to existing autos that could double today’s average gas mileage of 26 miles per gallon.”  (Scientific American) Vehicle owners are able to do many necessary maintenance items to keep cars running at peak performance, therefore improving gas consumption. Just by adding an aftermarket variable valve timing...
