Forced Military Service

...motivate kids into preparing themselves for life after high school. I would propose that after graduating, they would have an option; either go to a college or enlist in the military for a mandatory three years. There are many reasons why kids may not be able to go to college, but that should not give them an excuse to live their lives paycheck to paycheck without planning for their future. I believe the military is the perfect solution for this behavior. Money is always an issue with kids graduating high school and many can’t afford a four year university. Maybe the graduating student did not have the discipline or motivation to apply his/her self while the chance was there and now they are having a tough time getting accepted to a school. There is also the fact that many high school graduates have not decided what they want to do with their lives. In the following paper I will explain how the military can fix any of these problems. It is not cheap to go to a well known four year university, and even if one gets a loan, he/she would be paying it off for a long while after graduation. This could be a big reason some students graduating from high school do not attend college. Joining any military service would be an easy way to get anyone financially stable. After three years in, and most likely at least one deployment, one could have enough money for a vehicle and a place to live after getting out of the service. Also, if the student that could not afford to attend college after...

The Importance Of Attending In HBCU

...My whole life I thought about what it would be like to attend in HBCU. Will it be a life changing experience? Will I benefit from this? What should I expect? As a kid I always had to deal with being in schools and softball teams that were not diverse. There was always me representing the African American community on my softball teams. This made me feel like, why? Why am I the only one? Team after team I would get my hopes up to just, just maybe have another person of color on my team. Time after time my hopes were raised for nothing. After awhile I stop believing. In middle school there would always be a tight knit community of Africans Americans who would stick together. We all felt like one family. Every morning we would all find each...

Should College Athletes Be Paid Essay

...What is a college education worth? Is it worth more than books, tuition, room, and board? Some people think that college athletes should get more than this. College athletes shouldn't be paid for playing college sports because some already get a full- ride scholarship to the college. Many people think they should be paid above and beyond their scholarship to play their sport, but the athletes are already receiving the benefit of a free education. Why is it that some people feel college athletes should get paid above and beyond their scholarship money? Some say the extra money will be used to pay for meals they eat off-campus, clothes, or a trip over spring break. The college athletes believe other kids get money from their parents on top of their scholarships, so why shouldn’t they? They can get jobs because they do not have practice to attend, so they can make money on the side. Some people feel like it would teach the kids financial responsibilities before they can receive the big contract in the NBA, NFL, or MLB. That is something every kid needs to know but what about the kids that do not get forwarded scholarships how do they learn. They...

Military Recruiting in High School

...Recently parents have decided to take the issue of military services recruiting in high school to the school board. Some parents are concerned and feel that military services should not be allowed in high schools because they lie and because they are aggressive with their recruiting tactics. Military services should be allowed to recruit in high schools in order to help all students be successful upon graduation by providing an opportunity for at risk students to leave their current situation. Also it provides students who will not attend college an alternate route of gaining valuable skills, and to provide an opportunity for low income students. Parents concerns for military recruiting in the school is that military recruiters lie to students about benefits and are aggressive in their recruiting tactics. “One of the most common lies told by recruiters is that it is easy to get out of the military if you change your mind.”(Ayers 2006) All though some military recruiters will lie and deceive others in order to get them to enlist not all military recruiters lie. Also with today’s technology any student can do their own research to verify the information a recruiter is distributing. Also parents believe the military service have gotten to aggressive with recruiting. The argument is teens are attracted to the free gifts and make a quick decision. Yes the military uses materials that they have branded with their logo to attract students attention. ( Atten-hut! ) However a student...

Should Students Get Paid To Go To School Essay

...Kids should get paid to go to school or at least get an reward for there work. Not in money, gift card, or even bribes. Not all students are going to go to college or a trade school most are going to just work at a simple job. Students rewards should be separated into three parts the ones that are going to attend college, the ones that are going to trade schools, and the ones that are not attending either of them and just going into a job right away. Arianna P. does not give her opinion on if she agrees with students should be paid or not, she almost in the middle and i think most thing she said in her essay is right but i do not agree with how parents and even schools would pay students it make more sense to me if the schools would...

Why Athlete Students Should Not Be Paid?

...the class is good,'' is what I'd hear. "I had to work late last night.'' They'd be stocking supermarket shelves until 4 in the morning. They'd be tending bar. One worked as a security guard at an apartment building. They'd fall into bed six hours before they had to be in my class. I think about these kids now, whenever the siren sounds for college athletes to be paid. What about my students? What does it say to them? These were not people who asked to be paid to attend college. These were folks who paid for the privilege. And let's be clear: College is a privilege. It is earned, not bestowed. Some, in fact, are still paying. It's one thing to go to school for free and to leave free of debt. It's quite another to work your way through and depart with a five-figure yoke around your neck. Should college athletes be paid? Why? At the highest levels, here is what they endure. Here's some of the hardship involved if you are an athlete, attending a university for free: A four-year audition for prospective employers. Or three years, or two. Or basically, whenever you and your pro league of choice agree you've passed the audition. I don't know about you, but when I was a college junior, schlepping to town council meetings on Tuesday nights for my Journalism 301 class, no newspaper editor was there to praise my fascinating reporting on zoning changes in a...

...Cooney E4/6th 29 March 2016 Attending College Some may say college is not for them, and others believe it is. College is indeed time consuming and technical, but it is also the start of the life of some people's dreams. A person could give endless reasons as to why they do not want to attend college, such as: it is too expensive, it is time consuming, or there are not always jobs in the field they got their major in. Others will argue that. A person should attend college because it gives better jobs, more opportunities, and easier connections in the work field when looking for a job. People with only a high school diploma do not make as much money as a person with something as simple as an associate's degree. “People with a college degree make around $1,100 a week. Someone with a high school diploma makes just $638” (GreatSchools Staff). An associate's degree is only two years of college. Some people only go for two years because that is all they need for the profession they want to proceed in. Although a person that attends college for more than two years obviously has a higher degree. The higher the degree you have, the more money you make. Some parents do not want to support their children beyond high school. “A lot of high school graduates have never worked, paid a bill, or learned anything about personal finance” (Slide, Casey). College will most definitely teach a person how to finance wisely. Not only does college help a person earn more money, it helps a person...

Why High School Football Shouldn't Be Banned.

...Vern M. Rotruck Lyndsey Daniel Comp I MWF 12:00 19 November 2014 Why High School Football Shouldn’t Be Banned. Football, ever since it began, has had the constant question of should it be banned. Footballs origins began back in ancient Greece where even then it was known as a very rough and brutal game. When football came to England it was thought to be so rough that kings Henry II and Henry IV both actually banned it. A lot has changed since those times in history. We now have equipment for the game and every year the equipment keeps evolving into a more safety conscious design for the player. Rules for the game also keep changing throughout the years with the player’s safety in mind as well. Because of these changes, it has greatly improved the sport for the player and shouldn’t be banned do to its once rough past. When people think of football one of the first things that comes to one’s mind is injuries that the player may receive. “Dr. R. Dawn Comstock and her staff analyze the data to describe the rates, patterns, and trends of high school sports-related injuries. Such epidemiologic analysis is the necessary first step toward the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based, targeted prevention programs to reduce the number and/or severity of injuries among high school athletes.”(University of Denver Colorado). Each high school has their own programs that is mentioned by Dr. Comstock in place to help alleviate those injuries. Here this year Riddell...

Pros And Cons Of Getting Paid

...is it worth the risk of not getting your college degree? I personally am not biased towards either side. I can think of a lot of benefits and disadvantages to players getting paid. Many people fight against it they don’t think kids should be making that much money because they’re already basically getting a full ride to whatever college they’re attending. Then again it could be the only hope for some kids that grew up with nothing and have enough talent to make it pro and their ultimate decision to go pro is to have money when they had nothing growing up. I also think though that if I were in their shoes I would want the money. I mean who wouldn’t love to be paid to play a...

Going Back to School

...Why I decided to go back to school I would honestly have to say that my decision of going back to school has to be the most adult decision I have made. So many pros and cons were involved in this decision. Although going back to school can certainly be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, it is not a decision that I could make selfishly. A solid support structure is one of the keys to seceding in this journey. I needed to know that my fiance was willing and able to support me in the decision I made. I also needed my family’s support to know that the decision I made was the right one. A huge advantage of returning to school at an older age is that I will appreciate learning in a way that was not possible before. This life experience will give me a perspective of what life is really about. I fell like this time around I will enjoy learning and my grades will be reflective of this.   I needed to complete what I set out to do when I was younger. That is why I decided to finish school and actually finish something I have started. My parents also had a big part in my decision. I know that they worked really hard for us to go to school. I know that they will be very proud to see any of us finish school and show for it. Another big denominator in my decision was how now a days you are only worth anything if you have a degree. My decision was made because I want to make something out of myself, and I know that I am capable of doing it. I don’t want to have a regular...

Athletes vs. Non-Athletes

...school students across the U.S. participate in some kind of organized sports team. Is it morally right to let kids play sports and encourage them to become student-athletes? Many people believe that athletics can make a person change their personality, or it takes too much time away from them performing to their maximum strength, academics. Some even question, what the purpose of playing a sport? The purpose of this essay is to explain why it is morally justifiable for parents to let their kids be engaged and play sports. Playing sports can help you become a better person for the future and can help students become motivated about academics. I will explain how a student-athlete builds character and the aspects that they learn on and off the field. Being a student-athlete does not only mean you only know how to play a sport or sports but you know how to compose yourself around others, and how playing a sport in high school can help you become a better person in the long run. Participating in team sports helps to develop good character. One of the major characters you learn by participating in athletics is that you learn how to become responsible. Halloween Party By Lillian Ross Essay

...anyone heard of a kid who wants to go to school instead of going to play with their friends? Likewise this story “Halloween Party” is identical to the statement above as these kids are so focused on school and their future, that being a kid is nonexistent. Not to mention this story is from 1980, while the mother who is hosting the party only hears thirteen-year-olds talk about Yale, Harvard, Exeter. The kids in attendance at the party only care to talk about how much money they want to make and the title of the job they want. Lillian Ross’s message in “Halloween Party” is the kids are too focused on the future and not present time. The kids attending the party need to understand that the answers to life do not come this...
