...Employers who ban hiring smokers may seem like they are impinging the rights of citizens, but is it? The policy is said to be adopted by more than 6000 companies across the country. In northeast Ohio health care systems such as Cleveland Clinic, Summa Health, Parma Community General Hospital, and Medical Mutual of Ohio have all adopted the nicotine free policy in hopes to splice health costs. I believe the trend adopted by the Cleveland Clinic to promote a healthier workforce by banning hiring smokers is an honorable initiative because, it will improve the overall health of their workforce, shows the customers their strong conviction toward the health and wellbeing of their organization as well as patients, and the policy will save the organization money. The policy to not hire smokers will improve the overall health and wellbeing of healthcare systems work force. Smoking has been proven to cause illnesses such as heart disease, COPD, bronchitis, sinusitis, and when people do not smoke they are less susceptible to get sick, in turn making for a healthier workforce. A study by the Health Policy Institute of Ohio in 2006 found that Smokers average 6.16 missed days of work per year due to illness compared to 3.86 days for nonsmokers. Therefore hiring a non-smoking workforce would mean less call offs due to smoking related incidences. Having a no-smoking, no-smell policy is the safest for the comfort of patients. The smell of cigarette smoke “could cause a negative reaction in...

...The past couple of years in this Health Science endorsement has helped me decide that I want to continue my time in this program. Throughout my high school years I have taken many science courses, making me more encouraged to explore in this area of study. In freshman year, I took biology and that was the first step to something great. I really enjoyed learning about the human body and the entire human existence. This year as a junior I took anatomy and physiology, physics, and health science and clinical rotations, and I love each one. All three science classes helped further my learning experience on the different science aspects and what each has to offer. My career aspiration is to become a Pediatrician, which is a doctor who specializes in helping kids get better. The Health Science clinical rotations benefited me by helping me understand and get a better grasp on what I need to know to be in the medical field. This class will help me get better at my communication skills with patients and learn what it is like to be in their shoes going through what they are. Even though I am an intern with my Pediatrician, I feel like this class will help improve/ benefit how I approach things in such situations, such as,...

...interpersonal skills are those essential skills involved in dealing with and relating to other people, largely on a one- to-one basis. The care of patients is the primary concern of all health care providers so in order to achieve this goal, providers and healthcare personnel have to maintain and improve performance and good clinical care. Good interpersonal skills can lead to creating a friendly environment for patients and staff, effective time management, improvement in patient care and can also help developing a good reputation for the clinic or hospital. The scenario I will present in this paper will be between a health care worker and an unruly patient and how using interpersonal skills will mitigate the situation. Ruth Baxter, a patient at the a local clinic in Beaufort, South Carolina had an appointment at 10:00 and promptly filled out her paperwork and sat waiting to be seen. The front desk clerk, John Green decided to use one of the many interpersonal skills he has acquired over the course of his career. He decided to use his interpersonal skill of communicating to Ms. Baxter to try to help mitigate the situation. ...Health Science Symposium Abstract NOTE: I initially had a group but it would have been very difficult to make the meetings and contribute to the poster. I am a commuter so my school schedule is based around that. I also have a job, which the days and hours vary, but are usually three times a week and after my classes are done for the day. I feel it will be easier to complete the project on my own and in my spare time. Part 1: The structure I wish to discuss is the eye. The eyes main function is vision. I will briefly explain the process of how we see. I will also talk about the anatomy of the eye. Part 2: The disease of the eye I wish to focus on is Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease due to the build up of pressure in the eye, which will damage the optic nerve and cause the loss of vision. I will talk about why Glaucoma occurs, the incidence rate, symptoms, treatments and what causes the disease. When talking about the causes of Glaucoma I will briefly describe the different types but the poster, as a whole, will focus of Glaucoma in general. 1. The heart is actually THREE PUMPS. 2.
