...School Start Times April 9, 2015 Should schools start later? There has been much speculation on the effect of sleep habits on academic performace. Many parents have pushed for later start times, with limited success. In a recent report, the American Academy of Pediatrics supports pushing back start times for older kids, particularly teens, because it’s better for their mental and physical health. To begin, during puberty teens begin a biological shift in their sleep patterns. Which means they go to sleep later and they wake up later. As children become teenagers, their sleep-wake cycles shift two hours later, making it difficult to go to sleep before 10:30 PM. As a result, a National Sleep Foundation poll found that 59 percent of middle schoolers and 87 percent of high schoolers are getting less than the recommended 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours of sleep a night. 40% of high schools start 8:00 earlier. Students are extremely stressed in the morning and are rushing to get to school on time. That way they don't have a good breakfast or they don't have time to review their studies and they get to school tired and depressed. To continue, not getting enough sleep can have many consequences. It can limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, your homework, or special events. Sleep deprivation induces significant reductions in performance and alertness. Reducing your nighttime sleep by as little...

...early to get ready for school. As tired as I was, I wasn't focused at school causing me to fail a math test the following week. Throughout the semester, I didn't try my hardest to succeed in my math class anymore because I was disappointed with the score I received. Throughout the year my school performance decreased causing me to get bad grades in all my classes. A later school start time is better. A later school start time is better because it can improve a teens health and school performance. Some may argue that an earlier school start time is better. A later school start time is better because it can improve a teens health. According to “Bright and Early...or Not?” by Achieve3000 it states, “Studies indicate that delaying school start times is a key factor in helping adolescents get the sleep they need.” This evidence supports the claim that a later school start time is better because it can improve a teens health because it shows how adolescents who get enough sleep are healthier and do better in school....

...Benefit by Starting School Later Morning after morning I find myself fighting the same battle, getting my son out of bed. Many times, I think he is awake and walk away only to come back and find he is snuggled back under is covers sleeping soundly. This doesn’t typically make for a good morning for either of us. In my own rush to get ready and out the door to work, my frustration builds. It is very difficult to hide frustration at times. He picks up on the stress and is put on the defensive while he is in his own rush to get ready and out the door. My frustration always came from a very practical standpoint. This young man is 18 years old, why can he not wake up to the six alarms he has set? He used to do such a good job at getting himself up, what happened? I would compare him to myself as a teenager. I didn’t have anyone to make sure I got out of bed and to school on time, I was responsible for myself. I knew it wasn’t right to compare two people, everybody is different. I then started thinking about the situations. What things in his life are different than mine at the time? There are many, but one that really stood out. I started school at 8:30 a.m. His school starts an hour earlier. I only did a little research at the time, and it showed that teenagers, in general, require more sleep. I also talked to a few of my son’s friends and their parents. Krista Carden, a senior at Moberly High School, stated that she has to get up at 5:00 a.m. to start getting ready for...

...Should School Have Later Start Times? ¨Starting the school day before 8 a.m. might be a struggle at first, but there are benefits.¨- Marie Anderson, Demand Media. After school activities, school budgets, academics, and parent schedules all benefit from early start times for school. On the contrary, teenagers need at least 8.5 hours of sleep each night to stay healthy. Do you get enough sleep? ¨A 2001 study showed that school administrators cited extracurricular activities as a major reason why high school campuses would rather start earlier in the day,¨ declared Marie Anderson. After school activities benefit from early start times in many ways. If school starts earlier, there will be more hours of daylight for outdoor sports/activities. Which gives teens more time to walk home in the light; instead of the scary, darkness of the night. I am a cross country runner; I can tell from experience that while running in the dark is fun, it is not necessarily the safest activity out there. Making sure you homework gets done is very important. Once you complete your homework you have time to spend with your family. Starting school earlier will give you more time to do both of those things. To go anywhere in life you need a good education, and, or money. Lots of high school...

...morning, teens all across America are awoken by the deafening and annoyingly familiar sound of their alarm ringing, beckoning them to get ready for school. Their response; hitting that well-known snooze button, as their bodies crave another hour of sleep. Most high schools in America start at or earlier than 8:30 AM, which is much too early considering that the students usually fall into a deep sleep sometime after midnight(Wallace). Studies show that 87% of students, or more specifically, teens attending high schools report getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep on weekdays due to their schools’ early start times(Reddy). Start times at 8:30 AM or earlier in America are negatively impacting teenagers’...

...Have you ever gone to school tired because if so you aren't the only one, many students have the same problem as you. I believe that the school start times should be later than what they are now. Start times should be later because schools can save money and be able to spend their budget on other stuff, people go to school tired and sleep deprived because of the early start times, and later start times because there are many positive effects on the students. If school would have their start times later they could save money on their budgets. Later start times would make busses more efficient and save on transportation. A school in West Des Moines said that the later school times made the busses more efficient and they predicted that they would...

...Trevor Rickert 5th hour 10-06-17 School Start Times I believe that school should start later, at 8:45 AM. I think that school should start at 8:45 AM everyday because the average teenager needs nine to ten hours of sleep a night. Another reason school should start later is because students tend to fall asleep in their first hour class because they didn’t get enough sleep to stay awake. Another reason that school should start at 8:45 is that every teenager releases a sleep inducing hormone called melatonin around 10:45 to 11:00 PM. A new, later schedule would also be easier on the bus drivers who have to wake up at 4:00 AM every morning to drive children to school. Students would be more awake as well for tests that take place early in the...

...Schools should have an early start time, because if it started late it would mess up everyone’s schedule. It would be even more difficult for parents to bring you to school every day. For a regular family it would completely mess everything up. According to Should School Stay Early written by Teennink Web, “It means changing a teens whole schedule, which in many cases is nearly impossible.” Parents have work at 8 am a 7:45 start time would be perfect. If school started at 8:30 what would they do? If you had a sports practice at 5 and school ends at 5:30, what would you do? Any way you put it later school would mess up a family’s schedule. Day times can be big issues. Changing school hours is easier said than done. If school start two hours...

...In a recent article in The Clarion – Ledger there were some debates about the later start time for high school. This discussion has become an issue among some families. Some say sleepy teenagers are likely to be tardy, absent, and moody, but that is true in some cases. Many people say that a later start time for high school students more sleep and a later open bell can help improve the lack of sleep. That may be true, but going to bed a reasonable time at night will help. The idea of changing school time would cause a major disorder in the school and the students’ schedule. For students who play sports will be getting out of practice later than they did without the later start time for school. By the time these students get home, they will...

...The case of school start times has emerged as a prominent issue that appears to be growing in distinction within communities. Doctors and parents are pushing for schools to switch to later start times in order to accommodate for teen’s lack of sleep. Moreover, doctors believe that teen sleep deprivation is a side effect of excruciatingly early school start times. Nonetheless, these communities fail to see the financial difficulty in schools delaying their start times. Overall, it is the habits that teens practice which causes students to be less focused in their studies. Rather than changing school start times, students must learn to adjust to these start times and demonstrate habits that will become beneficial towards their overall health....

...because school ends to late? Besides getting a bit more sleep you can miss out on sports and activities. The topic that school should or should not start later has been discussed many times. Many schools have considered to change their start time later, but only some schools have done it. The schools that tried a new school time have found that it benefited the students while other schools don’t recommend to switch the starting time. “Should School Start Later” by Justin O’Neill, “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning” by Mark Fischetti and “Teachers overwhelmingly oppose later high school start times in Montgomery” by Julie Zauzmer and Dana Hedgpeth give support that schools shouldn’t start later. Despite the fact people think school starting earlier is good for students but I strongly believe kids should wake up because school will end to late, there will be transportation problems and changing school times can be unbeneficial for students. To begin, school will end to late. School ending to late can cause various problems for the students. Scope states “For one thing, starting school later means dismissing school later, which leaves...

...brush teeth, eat, catch the bus, go to school. No one wants to get up in the morning and most people would agree. The average start time for high schools in America is 8:03 which is before the recommended start time of 8:30. Why does school start early? The majority of U.S. middle and high schools start their school days too early, not letting young people get enough sleep for development and academic success. One of the reasons schools should start later is that they are not starting at the recommended time set by the American Academy of Pediatrics of 8:30. A new study was published from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) that states that less than one in five middle and high schools in America starts...

...Schools are trying to push back start times in school for children to get more sleep. If this happens many events could be disrupted. If schools start earlier we will lose money and this will result in many catastrophic events. Should schools take this chance? Schools should not start later, it could disrupt children’s after school schedule and cost a lot of money. Will school’s use this or not. If we started school later it will be costing about 8 million dollars to change the bus schedules. The school board will have to chose if they are going to change the schedule the schools will lose lots of money. In the video “Should schools start later in the morning?” it states that “After dropping the high schoolers the busses turn around drop the middle schoolers and then the elementary schoolers.” This could result in a hectic morning for the busses and if one change happens they might need to buy new busses for the high schoolers and that is what will cost a lot. If the school push the start times back it could result in consequences since they end school later too. I do not think that it would be smart to push the school times back because if we push school times back we are also pushing the end times back. Many children have homework or play...
